Ohio Man Who Held Three Women Captive Commits Suicide

(AP) — Preliminary autopsy results confirm the Cleveland man convicted of holding three women captive at his home for about a decade hanged himself in prison.

Officials say 53-year-old Ariel Castro was found hanging in his cell around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, in central Ohio. Prison medical staff performed CPR before Castro was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Franklin County coroner says an autopsy done early Wednesday showed it was a suicide, and the cause of death was hanging. She said toxicology tests still would be completed in the coming weeks.

A prisons spokeswoman says Castro was in protective custody because of the notoriety of his case, meaning he was checked every 30 minutes. But he was not on suicide watch.

UNMC to Staff Health Info Booth at Husker Harvest Days

(AP) — Health professionals who specialize in ear, nose and throat issues are making themselves available for questions at Husker Harvest Days in Grand Island.

The University of Nebraska Medical Center will have its health experts at a booth on Sept. 12 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can also register to win one of two iPad mini computers. The booth will be staffed by three physicians, a physician assistant and a nurse.

Dr. Dwight Jones, a university department chairman, says some of the most common ailments for rural residents are chronic sinus disease and late summer and fall allergies.

Treasurer Stendberg to Hold Financial Literacy Program in Gibbon

(AP) — Nebraska State Treasurer Don Stenberg is in central Nebraska to launch a new financial literacy education program for high school students.

Stenberg will be at Gibbon High School on Wednesday to launch the NEST Financial Scholars program, which can be accessed on the State Treasurer’s website at www.treasurer.org at no charge to schools or students.

The Wednesday afternoon event will include a demonstration of the web-based program, developed by Washington, D.C.-based educational technology company EverFi. The website uses digital games to educate students on critical financial topics.

Nebraska State Fair Attendance Dropped This Year

(AP) — Attendance dropped slightly this year at the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island.

Officials say attendance was nearly 335,000 for the 11-day fair, which ended Monday. That’s a drop of 0.6 percent from the 2012 fair, which drew nearly 337,000 people.

Officials say the hot, humid weather was a possible reason for the decline.

California Woman Charged with Cocaine Possession with Intent in Lincoln County

Authorities say a California woman who was traveling with a 5-year-old has been charged with cocaine possession for sale.

25-year-old Nicole Rhoads was arrested on Saturday. The Nebraska State Patrol says a trooper pulled over Rhoads’ vehicle about two miles west of North Platte on Interstate 80. The trooper says he found about 20 pounds of what he suspected was cocaine in the vehicle. The substance has been sent for tests at the patrol’s crime lab.

The child with Rhoads in the vehicle was turned over to Nebraska authorities.

Lincoln County Jail records say Rhoads remained in custody on Wednesday, pending $500,000 bail. Online court records don’t list the name of her attorney.

Gering Man Sentenced for Molesting Girlfriend’s Daughter

(AP) — A 42-year-old man has been given a year behind bars for molesting his girlfriend’s 10-year-old daughter at their Scotts Bluff County apartment in the Nebraska Panhandle.

Court documents say Anthony Arrellano had pleaded no contest and was convicted of sexual assault without consent, a misdemeanor. Prosecutors had reduced the charge from a felony in exchange for Arrellano’s plea. He was sentenced on Tuesday in Gering and given credit for 172 days already served.

Court documents say that in February and March, Arrellano inappropriately touched the girl and kissed her when her mother was a work.

B10 Won’t Penalize Schools that Schedule FCS Teams

If all goes according to plan, the possibility of an FCS wins over one of the big boys of college football won’t exist much longer in the Big Ten.

The College Football Playoff is coming next season, and strength of schedule is part of the criteria the selection committee will use to determine the four teams. Playing FCS opponents wouldn’t help the cause.

That’s only part of the reason Commissioner Jim Delany is encouraging Big Ten schools to keep FCS schools off non-conference schedules. He said recently that games against FCS foes don’t create enough excitement for players, fans and television networks.

Every Big Ten team except Michigan and Penn State is playing an FCS opponent this season. Three of those games are this week.

Blackshirts Amped for Bridgford, Golden Eagles

Lincoln – The Nebraska football team continued its week of preparation for Saturday’s game against Southern Misson Tuesday afternoon. The team practiced in full pads for just over two hours inside the Hawks Center and outside at the Ed and Joyanne Gass Practice Fields.

Defensive Coordinator John Papuchis addressed the media after practice, initially focusing on the similarities between Southern Miss quarterback Allen Bridgford and Wyoming quarterback Brett Smith.

“Allen Bridgford and Brett Smith are both big, strong-armed guys,” Papuchis said. “I’ve been impressed with the way Bridgford throws the ball, and I walked away very impressed with Smith as well. We’re still doing some research on Bridgford from his time back at Cal, but I’d say he’s somewhat similar to Smith.”

Papuchis was pleased with the way that some of his younger players played, such as freshman linebacker Josh Banderas, in their first action at Nebraska.

“Last week, the plan was to get Josh Banderas in a little bit more than we did,” Papuchis said. “The game wasn’t ever comfortable enough to make us that eager to put in a freshman, but we kind of bit the bullet in the fourth quarter and said it was time to get him out there. He played well, and we have a lot of confidence in him, whether we’re up 16 or up three like we were at the end.”

Although the impact of freshmen like Banderas was noticeable, Papuchis also mentioned his desire to get junior linebacker Zaire Anderson more reps against Southern Miss on Saturday.

“With Wyoming being a four-wide personnel team, the initial thought was that we were going to play a lot more dime, which made Mo Seisay a lot more involved,” Papuchis said. “I’d like to see Zaire Anderson play a bigger role this week, but that’s going to be dictated by what kind of personnel groupings we see from Southern Miss.”

Finally, Papuchis noted the difficulties of scouting opponents in openers and his belief that the defense is more prepared for Saturday’s game against Southern Miss.

“Openers are always somewhat tricky in college football,” Papuchis said. “You run the fine line between preparing too much and overwhelming your guys with information and not preparing enough, leaving a lot of guesswork. We did some things on defense that they had never seen before, and they did some things on offense we had never seen before. We have a little bit more film on Southern Miss, and we have a better base idea of who they are.”

Nebraska will hit the practice field again on Wednesday as the team moves closer to its second game of the season. NU will face Southern Mississippi on Saturday at 5 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast nationally on the Big Ten Network.
