Nebraska Towns Can Apply for Public Library Grants

nebraska-community-foundation(AP) — Small-town public libraries have until Oct. 1 to submit applications for grants from the Kreutz Bennett Donor-Advised Fund.

The fund was established to provide support for public libraries located in communities with populations of less than 3,000.

The late Shirley Kreutz Bennett, of Lincoln, established the fund through the Nebraska Community Foundation because she wanted to help smaller communities gain better access to knowledge and information.

All grants require a certain level of matching funds and evidence that the project has broad community support. Approximately $70,000 is available each year. Grant seekers are encouraged to review the guidelines and application procedures at www.nebcommfound.org/fund/kreutzbennett.

Earlier this year, grants were approved in Albion, Ashland, Hildreth, Mitchell, Osmond, Valley, Walthill and Wausa.

Free Water Tests to Be Offered During Husker Harvest Days

DHHS(AP) — Nebraskans can have their well water screened for nitrates during Husker Harvest Days in Grand Island on Sept. 10, 11, and 12.

People can take a cup of water in a clean bottle to the Natural Resources Building on the southeast side of the Husker Harvest grounds, East Avenue and Second Street. Samples will be accepted Sept. 10 and 11 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., and on Sept. 12 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

There is no charge for the screening. Results will be available within minutes.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services recommends that well water be tested yearly for nitrate concentrations. Experts say nitrates pose health hazards, especially to infants.

Nitrates can occur naturally, but they also are byproducts of fertilizer and manure.

Union Pacific Urges Caution Around Railroad Tracks

Union-Pacific(AP) — Union Pacific is reminding everyone to be careful around railroad tracks over the Labor Day holiday.

The Omaha-based railroad says it is especially important to be careful at railroad crossings during such a busy travel weekend.

UP’s director of public safety Dale Bray says motorists should always look for trains when they come to crossings.

The Federal Railroad Administration says 271 people died and 930 were injured last year in grade crossing accidents nationwide.

Honor Flights for Nebraska Korean War Vets Still Short of Donations

Korean War(AP) — The organizer of free Honor Flights to Washington, D.C., for Nebraska and western Iowa veterans of the Korean War says he’s booked a plane that he can’t yet pay for.

Bill Williams of Patriotic Productions in Omaha says he has a goal of $80,000 but has only $20,000 in donations so far.

Williams said he’s joined forces with his counterpart in southwest Iowa, who is in the same bind. The Iowa organizer also has raised just $20,000 toward his $80,000 goal.

They’ve booked the same plane for consecutive flights: Oct. 29 for the Nebraskans, Oct. 30 for the Iowans. Williams says that will save them about $20,000.

Merger Creating New Banking Entity in Nebraska

geneva-state-bank(AP) — The merger of two Nebraska banks will create a new banking entity: Heartland Bank.

The merger of Geneva State Bank and State Bank of Riverdale will create a bank with more than $350 million in total assets.

The merger is expected to be completed before year’s end, pending regulatory approval.

John Wilkins is chairman and CEO of Geneva State Bank, and he says the merger “makes a lot of sense to both communities we serve.”

New signage reflecting the change to Heartland Bank will be added in the first quarter of 2014.

Geneva has operations in Fairmont, Geneva, Grafton, Hastings, Kearney and Shickley. Riverdale has operations in Kearney, Ord and Riverdale.

Crete Voters to Consider $33 Million School Bond Measure

crete-high-school(AP) — Voters are deciding on whether to issue up to $33 million in bonds for a new high school and renovations at the elementary and middle schools in Crete.

The projects would help Crete Public Schools with its overcrowding problem. Steady enrollment growth during the past nine years brought 320 more students to the district. The district now has nearly 1,900 students.

Superintendent Kyle McGowan says passing a big bond issue now will let the district take advantage of a 4 percent interest rate for all of the district building needs rather than trying to take care of them piecemeal.

Ballots mailed out Friday for the all-mail election must be returned to the Saline County Clerk’s Office by Sept. 10.

Kansas Man Gets Prison Time for Fatal Lexington Crash

(AP) — A Kansas man has been given 20 years in a Nebraska prison for vehicular homicide in Lexington.

23-year-old Destry Swartz, of Coats, Kan., was sentenced Friday. He’d pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide while driving drunk and to flight to avoid arrest. Prosecutors dropped three other charges in exchange for Swartz’s pleas.

The Nebraska State Patrol says Swartz violated a Lexington traffic signal and raced south on U.S. Highway 283 to get away from a state trooper on Oct. 8 last year. The patrol says Swartz ran a red light and slammed into a pickup driven by 68-year-old Ruben Maravilla-Cortes, of Lexington. Maravilla-Cortes died at the scene.

Sheriff Kramer Says LCSO Willing to House State Inmates

LCSO-Badge(AP) — The county sheriff is more than willing to handle part of the Nebraska state prison overflow at the Lincoln County jail.

The idea of housing some state inmates in county jails arose last month as some legislators looked at ways to solve prison overcrowding without building another prison.

Lincoln County Sheriff Jerome Kramer said he would “strongly entertain” the idea. Kramer says there’s already some room available in the jail, and it was built in a way to facilitate expansion.

The jail is a moneymaker. Kramer says that in fiscal 2013, the jail made $100,000 from housing inmates from other counties.

U.S. Probes Nissan Pathfinder Fluid Leak

NHTSA(AP) — U.S. auto safety regulators are investigating complaints that transmission cooler lines can leak fluid in some 2013 Nissan Pathfinders and Infiniti JX models, leading to a sudden loss of transmission power.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has received reports of problems from five owners of Pathfinders. No injuries have been reported. The probe covers an estimated 110,000 cars.

The NHTSA has begun an evaluation to assess the size and safety-related consequences of the issue. Such probes can often lead to recalls.

Emails were sent seeking comment from Nissan but they were not immediately returned.

The Nissan Pathfinder and the Infiniti JX are both sport utility vehicles.

Lexington Man Drowns at Johnson Lake

johnson-lake(AP) — Authorities spent hours searching for a Lexington man in Johnson Lake before discovering his body Saturday morning.

The search for 29-year-old Gilberto David Salcedo began Friday evening, but it had to be suspended that night because of severe weather.

Salcedo was found in a 9-foot-deep swimming area at 8:30 Saturday morning.

Officials from Gosper and Dawson counties assisted the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission in the search.
