Letter: Red Cross Thanks Region for Support During Flood

The American Red Cross Nebraska/SW Iowa Region sincerely thanks all of the community members and partners that supported the Red Cross disaster relief effort during the South Platte River flooding event in western Nebraska.

In the days following the deadly Colorado Flooding, County Emergency Management reached out to the Red Cross for help to create plans for potential devastating flooding here at home. The Red Cross immediately mobilized additional resources from Kearney, Grand Island, Lincoln and Omaha including two emergency response vehicles. We quickly worked with emergency officials to identify communities that would be impacted by rising water and positioned supplies to open shelters should residents need a safe place to go when the water levels threatened their safety.  Nearly 30 volunteers from across the state left the comforts of home, ready to deliver disaster relief supplies to people in the path of the rising water. Nearly a half a dozen local businesses reached out to the Red Cross offering their support and donations food, water, snacks and sport drinks to the Red Cross, donations that were distributed to sandbaggers and first responders. Throughout the week, caring well-trained Red Cross women and men worked nearly 613 hours to deliver more than 6,000 bottles of water or sports drinks, meals and snacks to sandbaggers and first responders in communities such as: Big Springs, Hershey, Roscoe, North Platte, Sutherland, Brady and Maxwell.

The American Red Cross is committed helping communities prepare, respond and recover from disasters. The flooding two weeks ago brought together dozens of Nebraskans, rallying around what matters the most – living “The Good Life”.  The North Platte Red Cross is honored to work with you and serve our community on a daily basis. The American Red Cross Nebraska/SW Iowa Region invites you to join our team of nearly 4,000 region wide volunteers who answer the call for help when ever a disaster happens. Whether it is down the street, across the country or around the world, you can count on the Red Cross.

Sincerely,
