(AP) — Grand Island firefighters can’t wear their special pink shirts while on duty.
Firefighters have created a pink breast cancer awareness shirt as part of Breast Cancer Awareness month in October. The bright pink shirts carry a message: “Grand Island Fire supports Breast Cancer Awareness.” The shirts cost $20 each, and the proceeds go to a mammogram fund to aid women who cannot afford a mammogram to get one.
But Grand Island Fire Chief Cory Schmidt said October is also Fire Prevention Safety month. He says it’s important to have firefighters in their regular uniforms as they make educational talks to area schoolchildren and the public.
