Crews Move Historic Railroad Depot to Belvidere

belvidere-ne(AP) — The last Union Pacific Railroad depot in southern Nebraska’s Thayer County has been moved about eight miles from Alexandria to Belvidere.

The Hastings Tribune reports crews moved the more than century-old depot last week.

The depot was placed near the Whistle Stop train-watching station in Belvidere.

Such depots once stood in in numerous communities along the St. Joseph & Denver City Railroad line, but the one now in Belvidere is believed to be the last of the structures.

The rail line, which was completed through Thayer County in 1872, is now part of the Union Pacific network.

Plans call for renovating the depot, including installing restrooms for visitors who enjoy watching trains rumble along the nearby track.
