Sober and Safe Winter Driving Urged in Nebraska

state-patrol-logo(AP) — State officials are urging motorists to use extra caution during the winter holidays, as the season’s first snow looms in eastern Nebraska.

Gov. Dave Heineman and first lady Sally Ganem made the announcement on Wednesday, one day before the region was expected to see 1-2 inches of snow.

State officials kicked off the annual “Tie One on For Safety” campaign, led by Mothers Against Drunk Driving Nebraska. Ganem, a MADD national board member, urged drivers to always use seat belts, avoid texting, and designate drivers who haven’t been drinking.

The Nebraska State Patrol says it plans to place additional troopers on the roads during the holiday season. The National Highway Safety Administration says drunken driving deaths typically increase over the holidays.
