Report Ranks Neb. 5th for Volunteerism

volunteerLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A new report says Nebraska has one of the nation’s highest volunteerism rates, with more than one in three residents who stepped up to serve last year.

The report by the Corporation for National and Community Service says Nebraska ranks fifth nationally, with 36 percent of residents volunteering in 2012. More than 494,000 volunteers contributed a combined 50.8 million hours’ worth of time.

The findings were announced Friday by Nebraska first lady Sally Ganem, the honorary head of the state’s volunteer service commission. The commission works to encourage community involvement, and sponsors an annual statewide week of service in April.

The Corporation for National and Community Service is a federal agency that promotes volunteerism.
