Lawrence L. “Larry” Hoffmann, 88, of North Platte, NE, died Friday, January 10, 2014, in Omaha, NE.
Larry was born December 19, 1925, to Albin Leo and Mary Margaret Hearty Hoffman in Omaha where he grew up and attended school. He graduated from South High School and later Creighton University. Larry worked for Armour and Company for 13 years then worked for Iowa Beef Processors (IBP) for 34 years. Larry also served in the U.S. military from 1944 to 1946 as a Radio Operator in the Pacific Islands.
On September 26, 1959, Larry married Mick Mayfield at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in North Platte where they made their home. Larry enjoyed working outside in his yard and garden and tending to the many trees he planted. He had a talent for building and repairing anything. After his retirement, Larry enjoyed attending daily mass and his coffee groups. He and Mick traveled throughout Europe as well as Australia, New Zealand and Mexico. They also traveled the United States including a cruise to Alaska.
Larry was a member of B.P.O. Elks #985, American Legion P.R. Halligan Post #163 and Coyotes. He was also a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. His Catholic faith and German heritage were very important to him. Larry was a very kind and generous person who was also very fair and honest with the farmers and feedlots he dealt with.
Larry is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mick, of North Platte; his four daughters, Ann (Gary) Neimanis and their son, Austin Neimanis, of Dexter, IA; Lisa Hoffmann; Kristina Hoffmann and her daughter, Katherine Hoffmann, and her son, Avery Hoffmann; and Molly Hoffmann, of Lincoln, NE; a sister, Theresa (Dr. Joseph) McCaslin, of Omaha; his brother, Thomas Hoffman, of Seward, NE; two brothers-in-law, Bud (Phyllis) Mayfield, of North Platte and John “Jack” Minton, of Omaha; his nieces, nephews and other family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albin and Mary; a brother, Albin; and two sisters, Mary Frances (Dr. Charles) Brannen and Regina Minton.
A Rosary Service will be 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 15, 2014, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Neal Hock celebrating. Burial with military honors will follow in Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Visitation will be 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday with family greeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore. Condolences may also be shared at odeanchapel.com. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the North Platte Catholic Schools or NPCC Foundation in Larry’s name. Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore is in charge of arrangements.
