Dean M. Nelson, age 66, of North Platte, died January 17, 2014 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center. He was born on July 3, 1947 in St. Peter, MN to Alvin and Erna (Meyer) Nelson.<br /> Dean grew up on a farm in Minnesota. After graduating from high school he entered the U.S. Air Force where he served during the Vietnam War. After returning to the states, he began a career as a pilot working as a crop sprayer, flying commuter planes, and as a pilot for Viking Engineering. On July 27, 1989, he married Charlotte Stelten in Minneapolis. The couple moved to California in 1990. In 2005, they moved to North Platte where Dean worked at the Nebraska Truck Center. He loved to fly and was looking forward to retirement and flying his own plane.<br /> Dean is survived by his wife Charlotte of North Platte; several children, including Conan Hickey, and James (Amy) Hickey, all of Minneapolis, MN; a sister, Gloria (John) Swanson of Stratton, NE; a brother, Gene (Julie) Nelson of Mankato, MN; and several grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial has been established in his name and online condolences can be made at www.adamsswanson.com.<br /> Cremation was chosen and memorial services will take place a later date.
