Royals Fans Soak Up Spring Fever as Snow Falls

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Royals ace James Shields says he is open to discussing a contract extension that would keep him in Kansas City past the end of this season, when he is eligible for free agency.

That news should make fans, already flying high over a strong finish a year ago, feel even better as they turned out for the team’s annual FanFest on Friday.

The Royals exercised their $13.5 million option on Shields’ contract shortly after finishing 86-76, their best record since 1989.

Shields told reporters he was open to discussing a new deal but that those talks have not begun. He also said rumors he was seeking a contract similar that of Zack Greinke, who signed a $147 million, six-year contract with the Dodgers, were untrue.

Whooping Cough Case Confirmed at Adams Middle School

coughA student at Adams Middle School in North Platte has been diagnosed with whooping cough.

Adams Middle School Principal, Jeff Steinbeck, contacted sixth grade students and their parents through an automated phone message and via email on Friday evening.

According to Steinbeck, seventh and eighth grade students at the school have already received the vaccination as part of their school mandated vaccine schedule.

“As a precaution against the spread of whooping cough, our District is advising that 6th grade students get a vaccination as soon as possible,” said Steinbeck.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory disease. It is caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis.

Pertussis is known for uncontrollable, violent coughing which often makes it hard to breathe. After fits of many coughs, someone with pertussis often needs to take deep breathes which result in a “whooping” sound. Pertussis most commonly affects infants and young children and can be fatal, especially in babies less than 1 year of age.

Officials from the West Central District Health Department will be administering the vaccine in the Adams Middle School Library this evening until 8:30 p.m.

Vaccines will be given until the current supply is depleted.  More vaccinations will be offered early next week when additional doses are available.

There is no cost for the vaccine for those with insurance or medicaid, according to Steinbeck, and there are a number of “gift doses” available for those without insurance.

Students receiving a vaccination must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Omaha Man Gets Prison in Child Porn Case

jail(AP) — An Omaha man has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison for distributing child pornography.

U.S. Attorney Deborah R. Gilg said in a news release Friday that 44-year-old Michael Partain will receive five years of supervised release and must register as a sex offender.

Prosecutors say Partain distributed child pornography videos to undercover FBI agents on two separate occasions.

A search of his home turned up more than 100 files of child pornography. Dozens of videos involved kids under the age of 10.

John Fox Says Broncos Ready for Sunday

DenverBroncosFLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — After putting his team through its final full practice of the season on Friday afternoon, Denver Broncos coach John Fox declared his team ready to go for the Super Bowl.

The Broncos used the indoor field at the New York Jets practice facility for their nearly 90-minute practice after Fox determined that the outdoor synthetic field was too hard.

Yet the regimen came with another twist: Fox used the outdoor field for the 30-minute walkthrough before the practice, allowing for more exposure to the type of wintry elements that could be in play on Sunday night at MetLife Stadium.

Animal Welfare Advocates Back Neb. Ownership Ban

nebhumane(AP) — Animal welfare advocates spoke in support of a bill that would stop people from owning animals if they had been convicted of mistreating animals.

People favoring the bill Friday before the Judiciary Committee included representatives of the Nebraska Humane Society and an animal shelter.

Sen. Ernie Chambers, of Omaha, introduced the bill.

Chambers noted that people convicted of misdemeanor cruel mistreatment can be restricted from owning or living with an animal for up to five years, but the ban can’t be applied toward someone convicted of misdemeanor cruel neglect.

Chambers says the main difference between the two types of cruelty is how they are inflicted, but the animals can suffer equally.

No one testified against the bill and the committee took no immediate action.

Feb. 23 Game Time vs. Purdue Set
The Big Ten Conference announced that Nebraska’s game against Purdue on Sunday, Feb. 23, will tip off at 3:15 p.m. (CT). Shields Named Academic All-District
Nebraska forward Shavon Shields was named first-team CoSIDA Academic All-District VII this morning. Shields is a sophomore microbiology major who carries a 3.77 GPA and will move on to the national ballot to contend for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. On the season, he ranks second on the team in scoring (11.0 ppg), rebounding (5.7 rpg) and assists (1.8 apg). The Huskers are 11-9 on the season heading into a match-up with No. 10 Michigan on Feb. 5.

Huskers Hope to Slow Red Hot Hawkeyes

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballThe Nebraska women’s basketball team closes its first half of Big Ten Conference play by traveling to Iowa on Saturdayafternoon.

Tip-off between the Huskers (14-5, 4-3 Big Ten) and the Hawkeyes (17-5, 5-3 Big Ten) is set for 2 p.m. (CT) with live radio coverage provided by the Husker Sports Network. Matt Coatney and Jeff Griesch will be on the call on flagships B107.3 FM in Lincoln, the Wolf 93.3 FM in Omaha and 880 AM KRVN in Lexington. Free live audio is available on Huskers.com.

Live premium video also will be provided by subscribers of BTN.com All-Access.

The Huskers head to Iowa after producing their best all-around performance with an 84-51 win over Michigan at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln on Wednesday night. All-American Jordan Hooper led the Big Red with 25 points and 10 rebounds while etching her name in Nebraska and Big Ten history. Hooper moved past 2010 All-American Kelsey Griffin into No. 3 on the Husker career scoring list with 2,053 points. Hooper also pulled down the 1,000th rebound of her career to tie 1993 Wade Trophy winner Karen Jennings at No. 3 on the NU career rebound list, while joining Griffin and Jennings as the only Huskers in history to reach the combined milestones of 2,000 points and 1,000 boards. Hooper became just the fifth player in Big Ten history to achieve those marks.

Hooper made history with Griffin sitting on the Husker bench after having her No. 23 jersey retired in pregame ceremonies. Griffin, a four-year WNBA veteran with the Connecticut Sun, made the trip back to Lincoln from her professional season in Australia to watch her first Nebraska game since her historic Husker career came to a close in March of 2010.

Hooper heads to Carver-Hawkeye arena averaging 19.4 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. Junior forward Emily Cady has matched Hooper with a Big Ten-best nine double-doubles on the year, averaging 14.1 points and 9.4 boards per contest, including 15.1 points and 11.0 boards in Big Ten play. Sophomore point guard Rachel Theriot has added 13.0 points and 6.2 assists on the season, after producing her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 11 assists against the Wolverines.

Carroll and Fox enjoying Super Bowl moment

Super Bowl 48NEW YORK (AP) — As if they were enjoying a morning coffee together, Pete Carroll and John Fox fulfilled their final media obligations leading to the Super Bowl.

Relaxed, self-assured and even charming, the coaches of the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos answered questions for 30 minutes on Friday, joking with each other and the audience.

No grumpy one-sentence responses. No agitated reactions to edgy queries. At one point, Fox wondered if he could say a specific crude word to the audience on hand. Watching on television, he then went ahead and used the word. Carroll immediately quipped: “You can’t say that, John,” eliciting laughs from reporters — and from Fox.

Neither man seemed overwhelmed or even antsy about the biggest game of his life coming up on Sunday.
