(AP) — Lawmakers won’t vote on a bill to repeal Nebraska’s motorcycle helmet law until next week.

Senators ended legislative debate on Friday before acting on the measure. Opponents have mounted a filibuster to block the bill, saying it would increase the number of motorcycle deaths in Nebraska and lead to more serious injuries for survivors.

The bill’s lead sponsor, Sen. Dave Bloomfield of Hoskins, says riders should be allowed to decide for themselves.

The proposal would exempt riders older than 21 from the helmet requirement, but mandate eye protection on highways. Lawmakers are also debating an amendment that would prohibit motorcycle passengers who are less than 4 feet tall, unless they’re at least 16 years old.
