John C. “Pony” Spencer, age 76 of North Platte passed away Sunday February 23, 2014.
John was born on June 8, 1937 in North Platte to George and Sarah (Favinger) Spencer. He graduated from Brady High School with the class of 1956. Pony was an excellent running back in high school football. Brady won the 6-man football championship his senior year.
After high school he enlisted in the US Navy where he was an “airdale” on the Carrier U.S.S. Kearsarge. His favorite time in the Navy was when he was stationed in Kodiak,
Alaska. He was proud to vote to make Alaska the 49th state.
After the Navy he returned to the area and worked on the Howard Haythorn Ranch. He married Virginia Zeigler on April 6, 1963. He continued working on ranches through the 1980s and John was a jack-of-all-trades; his favorite thing was working with horses. He would give his shirt off his back for anyone and he had a great sense of humor.
