Kenneth Loree Shaner, 84, of Maxwell, NE, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg, NE.
Ken was born February 10, 1930, to Ross D. and Hazel May Houser Shaner at Maxwell. He grew up on the family farm south of Maxwell and attended Maxwell schools. Ken joined the U.S. Navy in 1947 where he completed his GED and served for 20 years.
On June 2, 1950, Ken married Shirley Jean Coon in North Platte, NE. At the end of his military career they returned to the family farm. Ken worked for the Tri County and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, retiring in 1991.
Ken was an avid fisherman and boating enthusiast. He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, Tin Can Sailors and the Cruiser Sailors and the Fleet Reserve Associations.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shirley, of Maxwell; his daughter, Kim (Jack) McKenna, of Brady, NE; two granddaughters, Loree Stripling, of Tumwater, WA and Crystal Bergeron Bauer, of Lincoln, NE; a step grandson, John McKenna, of Lexington, NE; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Dale (Betty) Shaner, of North Platte, NE; numerous nieces, nephews and other family.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Ross and Hazel; and a brother, Don Shaner.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore. Burial with military honors will follow at Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Visitation will be 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore. Condolences may also be shared at odeanchapel.com. Memorials are suggested to the Maxwell Volunteer Fire Dept.
