Omaha Teen Struggles to Steal Car with Stick Shift

omahapopo(AP) — Omaha police say a 17-year-old forced a woman and her son out of their car at gunpoint, but then struggled to steal the car because it has a manual transmission.

The teenager was arrested shortly after the attempted carjacking shortly after 7 Thursday morning, and he has been charged with robbery.

Police say the teen forced the woman and her 13-year-old son out of their Dodge Caliber in midtown Omaha.

Neighbor Beth Meiches says she watched the teen try unsuccessfully to put the car in gear. He sat in the car for several minutes before fleeing when police arrived.

Omaha Police Lt. Mike McGee says the fact that this car is a stick shift helped prevent its theft.

The teen was arrested a few blocks away.

NP Man Charged with Felony Assault, Child Abuse, Other Felonies

Johnny Castro
Johnny Castro

A North Platte man is in jail on multiple felony charges after he allegedly roughed up his girlfriend and one of her children.

According to Officer Rodney Brown, North Platte police responded to the report of a fight in progress at an apartment in the 1100 block of South Tabor at around 9:15 pm. on Wednesday.

Brown said officers had been to the same residence earlier in the evening due to a noise complaint, but left after resolving the issue.

Upon arrival, a 40-year-old female told officers that her boyfriend, Johnny Castro, had been abusive to her and her three children, ages 10, 12 and 15.

The victim alleged that Castro had pulled her hair, pulled her to the ground and struck the 12-year-old in the face.

As a result, the victim notified her relatives, 26-year-old Kenneth Delso and 21-year-old Edward Delso.  Brown said the Delsos went to the apartment and confronted Castro, where the three men became engaged in a mutual fight.

Following the fight, Castro allegedly grabbed a large knife, brandished it at the Delsos and threatened to kill them.

After further investigation, officers determined there was probable cause to arrest Castro for felony terroristic threats, use of a weapon to commit a felony, felony child abuse, cruelty toward a child, disturbing the peace and 3rd degree mutual assault.

Castro was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center after being medically cleared by staff at the GPRMC ER.

The Delsos were both cited for 3rd degree mutual assault.

CEO of Omaha-Based Gordmans Retiring

gordmans(AP) — Discount retailer Gordmans Stores Inc. has announced that President and chief executive Jeff Gordman will be retiring.

The company said Tuesday that Gordman is leaving to pursue outside interests and spend more time with his family.

Gordman’s great-grandfather founded the company nearly 100 years ago. Gordman joined the Omaha-based company in 1990 and has held the posts since 1996. Board chairman T. Scott King will become interim CEO while the board seeks a successor for Gordman.

Also on n Tuesday the company posted its fourth-quarter 2013 earnings, noting a 7.4 percent drop from 2012 in sales at stores open a year or more. Net income for the quarter was $2.7 million, compared with $7.9 million a year ago.

Gordmans has 95 stores in 20 states, including Nebraska.

Captain: Cruise Ships May Over-Rely on Electronics

cruise-ship(AP) — An expert sea pilot has testified before a federal agency that he is concerned that cruise operators, like airline pilots, may rely too much on electronics to navigate massive ships, losing the knowledge and ability to manually operate a vessel during a power failure.

Capt. Jorge Viso with the Tampa Bay Pilots testified Wednesday before the National Transportation Safety Board. The agency is holding a two-day safety hearing after several high-profile cruise mishaps that left thousands of passengers stranded for days in squalid conditions.

Viso says he fears cruise ship captains handling high-tech vessels with state-of-the-art navigation equipment are not as adept at manually handling the massive ships as they should be. He also says that while cruise ships are continuously getting larger, port infrastructure is not keeping up.

Lancaster Co. Prosecutors Aid Race Equity Study

Joe Kelly

(AP) — Lancaster County prosecutors will be opening their files and allowing special access for a group that will check racial equity in the prosecutors’ decisions.

County Attorney Joe Kelly says the New York-based Vera Institute of Justice has been engaged. The group gathers and analyzes data to help ensure the justice system is fair to all and more effective.

Kelly says he doesn’t know of any problem areas and is entering the project without expectations. The study could take as long as a year to finish.

Federal Judge: Women Should Tone Down Dress

Judge Richard Kopf
Judge Richard Kopf

(AP) — A federal judge is catching some heat for referring to himself as “a dirty old man” and suggesting in his personal blog that young women attorneys need to dress more conservatively in court.

Senior U.S. District Judge Richard Kopf weighed in on the topic Tuesday, relaying a story about a local female attorney in her late 20s who “wears very short skirts and shows lots of her ample chest.” The woman, he said, is the source of scorn among local female law clerks.

Kopf then goes on to offer “rules” for appropriate court attire, including that, “You can’t win. Men are both pigs and prudes. Get over it.”

Comments on the judge’s blog range from support to those calling him sexist. Kopf apologized on the blog to those he offended.

NPCC Knights Softball Drop Four against Williston State, Game Time Moved Up Against McCook

Knights-SoftballNorth Platte – The North Platte Community College softball team (4-15) dropped four games to the Williston State College Tetons over the course of two days and two double-headers. On Monday, the Knights lost 0-7 and 5-10 while on Tuesday the Knights fell 7-20 and 8-16. The Knights return to action on Thursday March 27 as they travel to McCook Community College (16-7) to face the Lady Indians at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. The games were originally schedule for 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

In the opening game on Monday, the Knights were held to only three hits. Jazmin Chang, Lexi Bryant and Katharine Savolt each recorded a hit for the Knights.

In the second game, the Knights were only able to muster three hits again but were able to score five runs. Brooke Wakefield led the Knights at the plate going 2-4, with one RBI, two stolen bases and one run scored. Britlee Anderson had the other hit going 1-3 with one RBI, one stolen base and one run scored.

“On Monday we did not carry over our offense from the day before and struggled at the plate,” said head coach Janelle Higgins. “Their pitcher had a very decent rise and we fell for it all day.”

On Tuesday, the Knights bats woke up a little as the Knights recorded seven hits. Anderson led the Knights going 2-3 with a double, a stolen base and a run scored. Soliel Atenza, Rylee Murphy, Sydney Standage, Brittney Odum and Chang all recorded a hit for the Knights. Six runners were left on base.

In the fourth game of the series, the Knights recorded nine hits. Atenza led the way by going 2-3 from the plate. Siarra Velasquez, Wakefield, Anderson, Savolt, Chang, Murphy and Odum all had a hit in the game. Velasquez had three stolen bases while Wakefield had two.

“Tuesday was a rough day. We relied on (Katharine) Savolt and (Rylee) Murphy to pitch,” said Higgins “they stepped up to the challenge but our defense did not show up. We committed too many errors behind them both to win.”

“Our team is young and still adjusting but they have showed a great amount of fight to be down like we were on Tuesday and fight to get runs. I am proud of these girls. We have tough games the next three days as we play McCook Community College and Iowa Western Community College. We are going to have to show up and be ready from the beginning to the end of all three games. It’s not how we start the season it is how we finish and I am still confident and believe that we will start getting the wins and make a run this next month.”

After the Knights face McCook on Thursday, the Knights return home for a four game series with Iowa Western Community College on Friday and Saturday. The games on Friday are scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. and the games on Saturday are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
