NP to Participate in Statewide Tornado Drill

tornado-sirenSevere weather is knocking on the door in Nebraska, and local and state officials want you to be ready when it strikes.

In observance of Severe Weather Awareness Week, there will be a statewide tornado drill Wednesday, March 26, between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. CDT.

The National Weather Service says the purpose of the drill is to ensure that Nebraskans can adequately receive a tornado warning and to practice any actions which would be taken to protect their life in the event of a real tornado.

Officials say the drill presents an excellent opportunity for everyone at work, school or home to practice their safety measures.

The weather service will issue a test tornado watch for North Platte and the surrounding area at 10:00 a.m. CDT,  and a test tornado warning at 10:35 a.m.

The North Platte 911 Center said the sirens will be sounded in the city of North Platte in conjunction with the drill.

They also want to take this opportunity to remind citizens to sign up for CodeRED Weather Warnings.

CodeRED will alert citizens in the direct path of severe weather.  Users opt in to receive the alerts they are interested in, and both cell phones and landlines can be registered.

NFL to Tweak Replay Reviews

nfl_logo2011-medORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The NFL officiating department will oversee replay reviews on challenged plays beginning next season.

League owners passed a rule Tuesday in which referees can consult with director of officiating Dean Blandino and his staff to help determine whether a call should be upheld or overturned.

Blandino and other staff will be monitoring the games, and they will immediately begin reviewing challenges before the referee even gets to his monitor. They then can make recommendations on what replays to look at, but the referee still will make the final decision.

Blandino believes the change will speed up the review process and help ensure the calls are made correctly.

Fight Between Teen Girls Results in Child Abuse Charge for Sutherland Man

Kelly Christner
Kelly Christner

A 47-year-old Sutherland man is facing a felony child abuse charge after he became involved in a scuffle between his daughter and another girl.

At around 7 p.m. on January 5th, an officer from the North Platte Police Department responded to WalMart, 1401 South Dewey, on the report of an assault.

A 12-year-old female victim alleged that while she and her 12-year-old friend were walking around the store, they became involved in an argument with a 14-year-old female and her male friend.

The altercation allegedly turned physical when the 14-year-old female punched the victim in the back right shoulder and face.

Following a brief struggle, the teens separated and went their separate ways.

According to Officer Rodney Brown, as the 12-year-old victim was leaving the store, the suspect’s father, Kelly Christner, confronted her and her friend.

The victim told officers that Christner “threw her on a bench” and choked her, making it difficult for her to breathe.  WalMart employees reportedly had to intervene to stop Christner.

Following further investigation, officers determined there was probable cause to arrest Christner for felony child abuse, and on March 21st, Christner was processed and released from the Lincoln County Detention Center.

The 14-year-old suspect was cited for two counts of 3rd degree assault.

NP Woman Pleads Guilty to Abusing Elderly Woman

Tia Eggers
Tia Eggers

A 33-year-old North Platte woman has pleaded guilty to abusing a vulnerable adult after reaching a deal with prosecutors.

Tia Eggers appeared in Lincoln County District Court on Monday.

According to prosecutors, police responded to the emergency room at Great Plains Regional Medical Center on the report of possible neglect of a 62-year-old female in January 2014.

Hospital staff reported that the victim had not been given the proper medication, including insulin, which staff said she had been deprived of for at least 24 hours.  As a result, the woman was having seizures and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

Staff reported to police that this had occurred at least once every month for six months.

It was determined that Eggers was in charge of caring for the woman.

Eggers eventually arrived at the hospital and was placed under arrest.

As part of the plea deal, prosecutors dropped a financial abuse charge, and Eggers entered the plea to one count of abuse of a vulnerable adult with physical injury.

She will be sentenced on May 12th.

Legislature Approves Purchase of New Neb. Airplane

dave-heineman(AP) — State officials are one step closer to being able to fly around in a new airplane.

Lawmakers passed a bill Monday that would allow the Department of Aeronautics to buy a new aircraft.

A legislative consultant has recommended buying a new twin-engine King Air model that can carry five passengers and two pilots. It would cost as much as $3.8 million, though money from other aircraft sales would likely reduce that cost. The plane would replace the state’s current, 1982 Piper Cheyenne aircraft.

Last year, lawmakers rejected Gov. Dave Heineman’s budget request to spend $2.5 million on a 2001 Beechcraft King Air, saying they hadn’t yet studied the alternatives.

Online Giving Course Adds Actor Patrick Dempsey

learn-by-giving-foundation(AP) — An online course on effective giving plans to offer lessons from actor Patrick Dempsey along with advice from Warren Buffett and other prominent philanthropists.

Students in the class that’s now scheduled to start in early April will be able to help decide how to give away at least $100,000 of Buffett’s sister, Doris’, money.

Dempsey agreed to join the Buffetts, baseball legend Cal Ripken Jr. and other philanthropists in sharing lessons they learned from their own charitable efforts.

The class is backed by Doris Buffett’s Learning By Giving Foundation and Northeastern University. Anyone interested in the course over the age of 13 can sign up now at www.learningbygivingfoundation.org .

This will be the second time the course is offered. Last summer, students helped pick 40 nonprofits to share $130,000 in grants.

Nebraska Veteran Recalls Pain of Being Shot

Korean War (AP) — A Fremont man remembers well the pain and shock of being wounded more than 62 years ago during the Korean War.

Charles Shipman expects to join other veterans who will board one of three honor flights so they can visit memorials and see other sights in Washington, D.C.

Organizer Bill Williams says 460 veterans from 200 communities around the state and family members and volunteer guardians will fly out early Tuesday morning and return late Tuesday night. Around $500,000 was raised to charter three planes and cover other expenses for the travelers.

Shipman said it felt like he’d been kicked by a mule when the two bullets pierced his body

Durant Scores 27, Leads Thunder Past Nuggets

Denver_NuggetsOKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Kevin Durant had 27 points and eight assists to help the Oklahoma City Thunder defeat the Denver Nuggets 117-96 on Monday night.

Caron Butler scored 23 points, his highest total since the Thunder added him right after the trade deadline. Reggie Jackson had 16 points and a career-high 11 assists, and Serge Ibaka added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Thunder, who won their fourth straight.

Durant, who was coming off a 51-point game against Toronto on Friday, is averaging 37 points during the winning streak. The Thunder sat point guard Russell Westbrook so he could rest his surgically repaired right knee.

Ty Lawson scored 25 points for the Nuggets, who had won three of four. The Thunder held Denver to 39 percent shooting.
