Woman to Be Cited in Crash Involving Neb. Officer

omaha-police(AP) — A woman will receive a traffic ticket in connection to a car collision last month that injured an Omaha police officer.

Omaha City Prosecutor David Smalheiser said Wednesday that a traffic citation for careless driving will be issued to 39-year-old Michele Eshelman.

Police say Eshelman was driving an SUV on the southwest side of the city on Feb. 20 when it rear-ended the patrol car of Officer Lou Tomsu. He had been investigating another crash at the time.

Tomsu suffered serious injuries, including a cut to the back of the head and rib injuries. Eshelman was not injured.

Nikko Jenkins Seeks Bench Trial

(AP) — A man accused of killing four people in Omaha last summer wants a judge to decide his case.

Records shows 27-year-old Nikko Jenkins recently requested to waive a jury trial. He wants Douglas County Judge Peter Batallion to set a date for a bench trial. A hearing on the matter has been scheduled for Tuesday.

Jenkins is charged with four counts of first-degree murder in the August deaths of Juan Uribe-Pena, Jorge Cajiga-Ruiz, Curtis Bradford and Andrea Kruger. He has pleaded not guilty, and claims he didn’t receive proper mental health treatment while previously in prison.

On Friday, Batallion granted Jenkins’ request to act as his own attorney in the case, though a public defender will provide him advice.

Pats, Broncos Still Fighting for AFC Supremacy

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Two months after meeting in the AFC championship, the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots are squaring off in the wine and dine game.

They’ve been the conference’s most aggressive teams in trying to upgrade their rosters in free agency.

After watching Seattle win the Super Bowl, both Denver and New England have focused on beefing up their defenses.

New England added two cover cornerbacks and Denver signed three Pro Bowl defenders.

Broncos general manager John Elway, who committed $66 million in guaranteed money to four players in the first week of free agency, acknowledged the additions of safety T.J. Ward, cornerback Aqib Talib, pass rusher DeMarcus Ware and receiver Emmanuel Sanders weren’t made in a vacuum but with the Patriots in mind.

Brooks Scores 27 in Nuggets’ Win over Pistons

Denver_NuggetsDENVER (AP) — Aaron Brooks had 27 points and a career-high 17 assists to lead the Denver Nuggets past the Detroit Pistons 118-109 on Wednesday night for their fourth win in five games.

Randy Foye added 22 points, Kenneth Faried had 14 and J.J. Hickson had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Nuggets, who were without Ty Lawson (sinus infection) and Wilson Chandler (injection to treat hip injury).

Greg Monroe scored 22 points to lead the Pistons, and Rodney Stuckey added 18.

Trailing by seven at the half, the Nuggets used a 10-2 run to take an 85-84 lead into the fourth quarter. Denver used another 10-2 surge to increase the lead to 104-91 with 6:04 left.

After the Pistons pulled within four in the final minute, J.J. Hickson had a layup and Anthony Randolph converted a three-point play to secure the Nuggets’ win.

Heineman Reinforces Support for ‘Good Time’ Reform

dave-heineman(AP) — Gov. Dave Heineman says he still wants to see a reform of Nebraska’s “good time” law in the Legislature’s efforts to reform state prisons.

Heineman said Wednesday that he viewed the proposal as an important change. The current system automatically gives inmates one day of credit for every day served, effectively cutting their prison sentences in half. The Judiciary Committee advanced its prison reform bill without changes to the “good time” law earlier this month.

Heineman says prisoners should earn good time, rather than automatically receive good time. He backed a proposal that would require inmates convicted of crimes such as murder and sexual assault to maintain good behavior while incarcerated and to participate in rehabilitation programs. That bill is still in committee.

Nebraska Lawmakers Won’t Expand Medicaid This Year

medicaid(AP) — A proposal to expand health care coverage to low-income Nebraskans won’t make it out of the Legislature this year.

Lawmakers lacked enough support to bring the measure to a vote after eight hours of debate. The bill will not be taken up again in this legislative session.

The “Wellness in Nebraska Act” laid out a plan to help cover health care costs for about 54,000 residents through a combination of Medicaid and subsidized private health insurance. It would have cost an estimated $62 million between July of this year and June 2020.

Supporters argued the proposal would have helped rural hospitals and working Nebraskans. But opponents who successfully blocked further consideration said it would have diverted money away from other priorities, such as education.

Ticket to Be Issued to Neb. State Trooper in Crash

state-patrol-logo(AP) — A state trooper will receive a traffic ticket in connection to a vehicle collision that Omaha police say happened after he ran a red light.

Omaha City Prosecutor David Smalheiser said Wednesday that 43-year-old Jason Morris will get a citation for violating a traffic signal.

Police say Morris was driving when he ran a red light in the early morning hours of Feb. 23. He collided with another vehicle. Two adults and three children went to the hospital but were not seriously hurt. Morris was not injured.

An investigation of the crash remains ongoing. Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins says an internal review or investigation will not be public information because it is a personnel issue.
