USDA: Corn Acres Expected to Shrink 4 Percent

USDA(AP) — The number of acres devoted to corn is expected to shrink about 4 percent this year as farmers devote more of their land to soybeans.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture released its annual forecast Monday of what farmers plan to plant.

The USDA says it expects 91.7 million acres of corn to be planted this year, down from 95.37 million acres last year.

The number of acres devoted to soybeans is expected to grow about 6 percent to 81.5 million acres from last year’s 76.5 million acres.

Iowa farmer Ray Gaesser says farmers are responding to predictions for tight soybean supplies and relatively high crop prices.

Gaesser, who serves as president of the American Soybean Association, says demand for soybeans is clearly high going into this year.

(AP) — Police in the nation’s capital say they have found the body of a man who appears to have committed suicide in a park where officers were searching for a missing 8-year-old girl.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier did not immediately identify the man, whose body was found Monday. She said police would likely confirm his identity later Monday.

Eight-year-old Relisha Rudd was last seen in the company of Kahlil Tatum, a janitor at the homeless shelter where she lived with her mother and brothers. The girl was last seen on March 1.

After she was reported missing, police in neighboring Prince George’s County, Md., found the body of Tatum’s wife in a motel room.

Police have been searching the park in northeast Washington since last week.

NP Juvenile Facing Felony Charge After Fighting with Mom, Police

north_platte_patchA 17-year-old North Platte boy is facing a felony charge after he fought with his mom and police.

According to Officer Rodney Brown, officers responded to the report a an uncontrollable juvenile in the 800 block of South Belmont at around 6:40 pm on Sunday.

The boy’s mother reported that her son became angry after being told he could not use the car.  In response, the teen allegedly threw his mom’s phone against the wall, causing damage to both the phone and the wall.

He then left the residence, according to Brown, and drove away in the car without the mother’s permission.

Moments after officers left, the mother advised that the boy had returned home on foot and stated that he had left the vehicle parked at an unidentified location.

The mother again called police and stated that the boy was claiming he was going to assault responding officers and not go willingly with them.

Staying true to his word, when officers returned, a struggle ensued.  During the struggle, the boy and two officers fell off the porch and onto the ground.  Brown said both officers were injured.

Police were eventually able to subdue the boy and transport him to the Lincoln County Detention Center.

Brown said the boy attempted to damage the patrol car’s windows and interior during transport, and continued to fight with police and jail staff once at the jail.

In the end, the boy was charged with two counts of felony assault on an officer, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, disturbing the peace, unauthorized use of a vehicle and being an uncontrollable juvenile.

The Post is choosing not to name the boy pending the filing  formal charges by the Lincoln County Attorney’s Office.

Curry, McMurphy Tally Goal And Assist In Win

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – The Tri-City Storm (21-34-3) picked up their first victory of the year over the Sioux City Musketeers (37-18-3) in their sixth and final meeting of the season at the Tyson Events Center on Sunday evening, pulling out a 3-2 win.

Patrick Curry and Ryan McMurphy each scored a goal and an assist, while Hayden Lavigne stopped 29 shots to backstop the Storm to a win in their third game in three nights.

The teams held each other scoreless for the first period, despite Tri-City earning three power play opportunities including a double minor in the opening 20 minutes.

Tri-City struck first in the second when McMurphy found Curry in front of the net for the score. The goal was Curry’s fourth of the season and came just over seven minutes into the middle frame. The second assist on the goal was credited to Storm forward Joey DiBenedetto, his first career USHL point.

Sioux City responded 59 seconds later however, with forward Adam Johnson scoring to tie the game at 1-1.

Later in the period, Chris Wilkie netted his 17th goal of the season, taking a pass from center Conner Valesano and beating Sioux City netminder Collin Olson up high with a shot to the right corner of the net.

Wilkie’s tally put Tri-City up 2-1 heading into the third period.

Right off the opening face-off in the final frame, McMurphy found himself with a quality scoring chance and beat Olson on a wrist shot from the right circle to open up the Storm lead, 3-1. Both Curry and defenseman Kevin Kerr were credited with assists on Tri-City’s third tally of the game.

Musketeer defenseman Jerad Rosburg scored an unassisted goal at 8:24 of the final period, cutting the Storm lead to 3-2, but Sioux City never came any closer.

Lavigne came up with all the saves he needed in the final minutes to win his second game of the weekend.

The Storm have just one final weekend remaining in the regular season and will make the trip to Des Moines to battle the Buccaneers on Friday night before returning home to host Lincoln on Saturday.

Saturday night’s game at the Viaero Event Center will get underway at 7:05 p.m. Tri-City will celebrate Fan Appreciation Night as well as honor the ten-year anniversary of their 2003-04 Anderson Cup championship team.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Nolan Aibel, Drew Mayer, and Kyle Eastman, along with defensemen Cutler Martin, Sean Lang, Tory Dello, Fredric Larsson and goaltender Jacob Johansson…

Omaha Officer Hurt in Crash Moved to Rehab Center

omaha-police(AP) — An Omaha police officer who was seriously hurt in a February crash has moved from the hospital to a rehabilitation center.

46-year-old Lou Tomsu is now at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln.

Tomsu suffered serious injuries, including a cut to the back of the head, broken vertebra and rib injuries in the Feb. 20 crash. The driver of the car that rear-ended Tomsu’s patrol car is being prosecuted for careless driving.

Tomsu is a 19-year member of Omaha department. His wife is also a long-time officer with the Omaha police.

Nebraska Man Again Loses Appeal in Toddler Death Case

Andre Robinson
Andre Robinson

(AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has again denied relief to a man who beat his girlfriend’s 22-month-old daughter to death.

Andre Robinson, of Omaha, was sentenced in April 2008 to life in prison for the November 2006 death of Branesha Thomas.

Prosecutors had said Robinson kicked the girl “like a soccer ball” while he was baby-sitting her and that she died from her injuries.

In 2009, the Nebraska Supreme Court upheld Robinson’s conviction of intentional child abuse resulting in death and his life sentence.

Robinson filed for post-conviction relief, a type of motion that is filed after all other appeals have been exhausted. In the motion, Robinson argued he should be released from prison because his lawyer was ineffective.

On Friday, the state’s high court rejected that argument.

Neb. Lawmakers Ponder Rural Population Declines

rural-nebraska(AP) — As population in many rural Nebraska counties continues to decline, some Nebraska lawmakers are considering ideas to reverse the trend that range from traditional proposals to radical suggestions.

The ideas come amid the latest U.S. Census figures showing population declines in 61 of Nebraska’s 93 counties between April 1, 2010, and July 1, 2013.

What should rural areas do?

Sen. Paul Schumacher of Columbus calls for studying the development of a new city near the interchange of Interstates 80 and 76 in western Nebraska, near the Colorado border.

Sen. Tyson Larson, of O’Neill, suggested reducing property taxes in an effort to entice more people back into agriculture.

Larson says part of the solution could be acknowledging that living in a city like O’Neill has benefits not found in large cities.
