NPCC Knights Softball Swept By Iowa Western

Knights-SoftballNorth Platte – The North Platte Community College softball team (4-19) was swept Saturday afternoon by the Iowa Western Community College Reivers (19-12). In the first game the Knights fell 11-0 in seven innings and in the second game fell 13-0 in five innings.

In the first game of the day, Katharine Savolt took the loss on the mound. Savolt had four strikeouts and gave up eight hits, including one home run. The Knights trailed the Reivers 0-2 after six innings, but gave up nine runs in the top of the seventh. The Knights had no hits and only two base runners as Siarra Velasquez and Britlee Anderson each drew a walk.

Shannon Lieber took the loss on the mound in the second game. Lieber gave up six hits, three walks and three earned runs to go along with a strikeout. Sydney Standage had the only hits for the Knights as she went 2-2 from the plate with two singles.

“Our biggest enemy was our offense today,” said head coach Janelle Higgins “as we were very undisciplined at the plate. We watched too many good pitches go by and swung at too many junk pitches. When you only have 4 base runners in two games it’s hard to win and even harder when you strikeout like we did today.”

“Iowa Western has a solid team and very tough pitchers. We still have work to do but there still is plenty of season left and we have our moments of being a solid team we just have to put it all together.”

The Knights return to the diamond on Monday when they host the Hastings College JV at the Dowhower Softball Complex at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Nebraska Woman Gets Jail for Killing Family Dog

jail(AP) — A 58-year-old Nebraska woman has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for killing a family dog that she feared.

Judy Lloyd was sentenced Friday for animal mistreatment.

Prosecutors say Lloyd intentionally ran over the 15-to-20-pound dog last July 23.

Lloyd apologized at sentencing, and she told authorities she worried the dog would attack a child.

Prosecutors say Lloyd took the dog to a rural area and tied it to a wooden pallet before running over the dog several times. She disposed of the body in a drainage canal.

Gov. Heineman Vetoes $65 Million from Budget

dave-heineman(AP) — Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman has vetoed $65 million from this year’s state budget, and is calling on lawmakers to put more toward property tax relief.

The Republican governor announced his line-item vetoes on Saturday.

Heineman called on lawmakers to put an additional $25 million to pay for property tax relief, saying it ought to be a larger priority this year. Lawmakers have already agreed to a $25 million increase in the state’s property tax credit fund, which would increase the total annual amount to $140 million.

Despite the vetoes, Heineman says he agreed with senators on many proposals within the nearly $8 billion, two-year budget.

Sidney Woman Accused of Assisting in Husband’s Suicide

assisted-suicide(AP) — A western Nebraska woman is behind bars, accused of helping her husband kill himself, then hiding his body.

Cheyenne County Sheriff’s deputies say 53-year-old Deann Kimble, of Sidney, was arrested Wednesday and has since been charged with assisting suicide and concealing a body, both felonies, in the death of her husband, 61-year-old Russell Kimble.

Deputies say Kimble told them that she had promised her husband she would not intervene when he decided it was “his time to die.”

She told investigators that on March 22, believing he was gravely ill, Russell Kimble shot himself in the storage unit in which they lived while she sat in their van. Investigators say she then wrapped his body is a shower curtain and sheet and buried him in a shallow grave.

Nebraska Woman Seeks Divorce from Partner

gaymarriage(AP) — A Raymond woman who married her same-sex partner five years ago in Iowa is now petitioning the Nebraska Supreme Court to be allowed to divorce.

Margie and Bonnie Nichols married in 2009. But when they filed for divorce last year, a Lancaster County District Court judge dismissed their petition, saying the court could not grant the divorce without recognizing the marriage.

Same-sex marriage has been legal in Iowa since 2009. Nebraska doesn’t recognize same-sex marriages, civil unions, or domestic partnerships, under a constitutional amendment approved by 70 percent of voters in 2000.

The Nichols’ case currently is before the state Court of Appeals, but Bonnie Nichols’ attorney, Megan Mikolajczyk of Omaha, has petitioned the state Supreme Court to hear it.

Hall County Jail Guard Accused of Sexual Contact with Inmate

Hall-County-Sheriff(AP) — A former Hall County corrections officer is the subject of a criminal investigation, accused of having sexual contact with an inmate.

A female guard who began working at the Hall County Jail in June was fired Monday. Hall County clerk’s office records show she had been on administrative leave prior to Monday.

Nebraska State Patrol Lt. Dennis Leonard says a criminal investigation is underway.

Hall County Jail Director Fred Ruiz declined to comment.

Federal and state laws bar police officers or jail guards from having sex with anyone under arrest or in custody. Nebraska’s law says consent cannot be used as a defense.
