Omaha Botanical Garden Reports Theft

lauritzen gardens(AP) — Lauritzen Gardens in Omaha says its handcrafted replicas of Union Station and Central High School have been stolen, along with more than 50 birdhouses, and it’s offering a $1,000 reward for their recovery.

The items were stolen from an offsite self-storage unit between March 22 and March 24.

Omaha police are investigating the theft.

The replicas of Union Station — now known as Durham Museum — and Central High School were made by Applied Imagination. The national company makes botanical architecture out of natural materials like tree bark and gourds.

The collection of one-of-a-kind birdhouses are made of state license plates and represent each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Elderly Omaha Woman Injured in Fire Dies

fire-graphic(AP) — An elderly Omaha woman critically injured in a March 17 house fire has died from her injuries.

Authorities say Virginia Muelleman died March 20 at the Nebraska Medical Center with her family around her.

A fire department spokesman says the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A funeral Mass for Muelleman was celebrated Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church.

Magnitude-5.1 Earthquake Shakes Los Angeles

USGS(AP) — Authorities say a magnitude-5.1 earthquake has shaken the Los Angeles area.

The U.S. Geological Survey originally estimated the quake to be a magnitude-5.3. It said the Friday quake struck at about 9:11 p.m. and was centered near Brea in Orange County — about 20 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.

About an hour earlier, a 3.6 quake hit nearby in the city of La Habra.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

No Criminal Charges Against Boy, 5, in Fatal Fire

fatal-fire(AP) — A Pennsylvania prosecutor says a 5-year-old boy who allegedly started a fire that claimed the life of a young girl near Pittsburgh cannot be charged with a crime because of his age.

Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. alleged Thursday that the 2-year-old girl’s cousin intentionally started the March 23 fire in McKeesport.

A spokesman said in a statement Friday that any child younger than 7 suspected of criminal activity is treated as a dependency case to decide if a crime was the result of abuse or neglect.

Zappala said Thursday that the boy is being evaluated by the Office of Children, Youth and Families, which may start court proceedings to remove him from his family because he has a history of starting fires.

Berger Scores Twice As Storm Top Force

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – The Tri-City Storm (20-33-3) got two goals from Chase Berger and defeated the Fargo Force (12-39-6) 4-1 at Scheels Arena on Friday night.

Storm netminder Hayden Lavigne made 38 saves in the win, while Jake Wahlin and Ryan McMurphy also scored goals for Tri-City.

Wahlin found the back of the net for the second time in as many games late in the first period, taking a pass from linemate Garrett Gamez and beating Fargo goaltender Mathias Israelsson with a quick release. The goal gave Tri-City the initial 1-0 lead and was the second tally for Wahlin, who was playing in his sixth USHL game as an affiliate this season.

Tri-City expanded their lead in the middle period when McMurphy had a highlight reel goal for his 11th of the season. The forward walked the goal line and shoved the puck past the outstretched pad of Israelsson to make it 2-0.

Less than a minute later however, the Force got on the board when Mikey Eyssimont scored off a two-on-one opportunity to make it 2-1. The puck, which deflected in off the stick of Storm defenseman Jalen Schulz, was the only one to get by Lavigne on the night.

Berger scored twice in a span of just over three minutes to open up the game and give the Storm a 4-1 lead.

The St. Louis native’s first tally came on a one-timer in the slot off a pass from Dan Labosky. His second was a deflection off an initial shot by Tory Dello. Berger now has 14 goals on the season.

The win was the first in Fargo for Tri-City since February 11, 2012.

Tri-City and Fargo will rematch Saturday night at Scheels Arena for their final meeting of the season at 7:05 p.m.

Spurs Win 16th Straight, Beat Nuggets 133-102

Denver_NuggetsDENVER (AP) — Marco Belinelli scored 27 points, Tim Duncan added 20 and the San Antonio Spurs extended their winning streak to 16 games by beating the Denver Nuggets 133-102 on Friday night.

Reserve Patty Mills had 16 points for the Spurs, who scored a season-high in points. This is their longest regular season win streak since reeling off 17 straight from Feb. 29 to March 31, 1996.

San Antonio also maintained a three-game lead for the top seed in the Western Conference. It’s a quick turnaround for the Spurs, who host New Orleans on Saturday.

Randy Foye scored 20 for a banged-up Nuggets squad that lost for the fourth time in five games.

Winston Justice Signs 1-Year Deal with Broncos

Winston Justice Denver BroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos signed backup offensive tackle Winston Justice to a one-year deal Friday.

Justice was brought in early last season after All-Pro left tackle Ryan Clady was placed on injured reserve with a foot injury. The 6-foot-6, 317-pound Justice appeared in four games during the regular season and one in the postseason.

Before his arrival in Denver, Justice played six seasons with Philadelphia and one with Indianapolis. Justice was originally a second-round by the Eagles in 2006.

With guard Zane Beadles’ departure in free agency, the Broncos will be shuffling around their offensive line to better protect Peyton Manning.

MLB Toughens Drug Agreement Provisions

mlb bigNEW YORK (AP) — Baseball players suspended during the season for a performance-enhancing drug violation will not be eligible for that year’s postseason under changes to the sport’s drug agreement announced Friday.

In a series of significant changes to the drug rules, Major League Baseball and the players’ association said penalties will increase from 50 games to 80 for a first testing violation and from 100 games to 162 for a second. A third penalty remains a lifetime ban.

A player serving a season-long suspension will lose all his pay. Under the previous deal, the Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez gets 21-183s of his salary this year, or about $2.8 million.

In-season random urine tests, in addition to the minimum two for each player, will increase from 1,400 to 3,200 overall. There will be 400 random blood collections used to detect human growth hormone in addition to the mandatory one for each player during spring training.
