A North Platte man, who is no stranger to theft and other criminal charges, has again been arrested, this time for burglarizing an elderly North Platte man’s home.

According to Officer Rodney Brown, North Platte Police responded to the report of a burglary of a residence in the 1500 block of North Sherman at around 10:oo p.m. on Thursday.

An 71-year-old male told officers the William Dennis Butrick, 22, had forced his way into the home and stole around $300 worth of coinage.

At around 11:30 p.m., officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle, driven by Butrick, near the area of Bryan and East 7th Street.

Following further investigation, Brown said officers found probable cause to arrest Butrick for felony burglary.

Brown said a small amount of money was recovered.

Butrick was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center, where he is being held without bond.

Butrick has an extensive criminal record in Lincoln and Keith Counties, including numerous theft charges.

Teens Accused of Killing Amish Family’s Pet Donkey

police-lights-redMONTGOMERY, Pa. (AP) — Three central Pennsylvania teenagers have been accused of fatally shooting a pet donkey on an Amish family’s farm.

The boys were charged Thursday, about a week after the donkey was shot 18 times on the Clinton Township farm in Lycoming County.

Amos Yoder and his family have lots of animals. But he says the 6-year-old Jerusalem miniature donkey named Eeyore was his children’s pet.

Yoder says the children would take turns riding Eeyore and the neighborhood children would pet him on their way to school.

Two 15-year-old boys and a 16-year-old boy are charged with cruelty to animals and weapons violations. State police say the teenagers each shot Eeyore six times.

The teens also admit shooting several deer. Additional charges will be filed by the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Tornado Shelters Face Dilemma with Pet Lovers

tornado-shelter-sign(AP) — As the spring storm season arrives in Tornado Alley, emergency officials are wrestling with a dilemma posed by man’s best friends.

Many public shelters won’t accept animals, so people end up dashing across town to rescue their pets or staying in unprotected houses rather than hunkering down in safety. Officials say that panicked pets cause problems in shelters when they’re packed inside with people they don’t know.

But many residents won’t leave their pets behind, and some try to ride out dangerous storms in cars parked outside the shelters. Last year, 34 people were killed by twisters in Oklahoma, most of whom were in cars or unreinforced houses.

MLB Clarifies Possession on DP Forceouts

mlb bigNEW YORK (AP) — Baseball clarified the meaning of possession for infielders trying to turn double plays on forceouts, saying they must have complete control of the ball but may drop it after intentionally opening their gloves for transfers to their throwing hands.

In the first season of expanded instant replay, when infielders have possession while trying to turn double plays has become controversial.

Major League Baseball said the interpretation of the Playing Rules Committee was agreed to by MLB, the players’ association and the umpires’ union.

MLB said Friday the committee, chaired by New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson, determined “a legal catch has occurred … if the fielder had complete control over the ball in his glove, but drops the ball after intentionally opening his glove to make the transfer to his throwing hand.”

Broncos Close Training Camp to Fans, Open Stadium

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos are closing their training camp to fans this summer because of ongoing construction at team headquarters. Instead, they’ll have three open practices at their stadium.

The Broncos’ Dove Practice facilities are undergoing a $35 million face-lift that includes the installation of an indoor practice facility and renovations to the existing complex, a project that won’t be finished in time for training camp in July.

Team president Joe Ellis said the construction presents safety and logistical issues, so the team decided to close workouts and instead will host three practices at Sports Authority Field instead of one.

Those will be July 27 and 30 and Aug. 2 for the annual summer scrimmage.

11 Kids, Driver Hurt in Calif. School Bus Crash

bus-accident(AP) — Authorities say 11 middle school students and their driver were injured in a school bus crash in Southern California.

Anaheim police Lt. Bob Dunn says three of the injured — the driver and two of the children — are in critical condition after the Thursday afternoon crash. The other nine students had minor injuries.

Television news reports show the Orange Unified School District bus tilted sideways and leaning against a tree on a roadside embankment next to Anaheim Hills Golf Course. Police say no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The driver was trapped inside the bus, and firefighters removed him before he was taken to the hospital.

The California Highway Patrol will take over the investigation. There is no immediate word on the cause of the crash.

Company Stopped from Accepting Abortion Waste

odd-news(AP) — Marion County commissioners have given final approval to an order to stop a company from receiving medical waste until procedures are in place to prevent the burning of fetal material to generate power.

While taking the action Thursday, commissioners said they were horrified and disgusted to learn that Covanta Marion was burning abortion waste to generate electricity.

Commissioners Sam Brentano and Janet Carlson made the decision at an emergency hearing. Both strongly oppose abortion rights.

The facility is owned and operated by Covanta in a partnership with the county. It processes 550 tons of municipal solid waste a day, with only a small portion coming from medical sources.

Covanta Marion did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment. The firm did not have a representative at the hearing.

Jared Spurgeon used a slap shot to get a puck past Colorado’s Semyon Varlamov just 3:47 into the game, much quicker than the 65:08 the Wild needed to score the last time. Game 5 will be in Denver on Saturday night.

Colorado Lawmakers Plan to Boost Marijuana Profits

Colorado-Marijuana

DENVER (AP) — The federal government has reluctantly agreed to let Colorado be the first state to collect taxes from the legal sale of recreational marijuana, but it has also made clear it doesn’t agree with the move and may try to stop it, if isn’t tightly controlled.

Instead of keeping a low profile with the money, however, some Colorado lawmakers are wanting to use the millions of dollars they’ve collected from pot sales to seek matching federal funds to keep kids of drugs.

The plan calls for transferring $3.5 million from the state’s marijuana cash fund to its general fund and then sending the same amount to a state department that would apply for the federal match.

Supporters say the move shouldn’t cause any concerns, it simply acknowledges and avoids potential conflict.
