Topeka Man Pleads Guilty to 2013 Homicide

Michael-Engstrom(AP) — A Kansas man already sentenced to more than 80 years in prison in Nebraska has admitted killing one person and wounding another in Topeka.

Thirty-four-year-old Michael Dean Engstrom and his wife, Jamie Engstrom, were captured in southeast Nebraska in February 2013, one day after the Topeka shootings.

Michael Engstrom pleaded guilty Wednesday to felony first-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. The charges stemmed from the fatal shooting of Ricky Mitchell and the wounding of his fiancee, Bridget Gakle.

Engstrom admitted opening fire while trying to rob the pair of money and methamphetamine.

The Engstroms then drove into Nebraska, where Michael Engstrom robbed a Pawnee City convenience store. He pleaded no contest last year to firing at law enforcement officers during the chase that followed.

Reality TV Stars Get Black Ink on Their Fingers at the Lincoln County Jail

If there’s one place you don’t expect to see reality TV stars, it has got to be the Lincoln County Detention Center.  But, that’s exactly where you could have met two of them.

Two brothers, Thomas “Ty” Emanuel and David “Ceasar” Emanuel, stars of the VH1 reality show “Black Ink Crew,” were pulled over by a Nebraska State Trooper just west of North Platte Tuesday morning, as they were on their way home from a weekend of celebration in Denver.

As the Trooper investigated, he learned that Thomas Emanuel was wanted for a parole violation in New York.  Additionally, Ceasar was found to be in possession of hashish and was driving on a suspended license.

The brothers were jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.  According to jail records, Ceasar bailed out, but Ty remains in jail as he awaits extradition to New York.

“Black Ink Crew” chronicles the daily operations and staff drama at a tattoo shop in Harlem, New York, which is owned by Cesar.

The show has aired for two seasons.

Report Blames Pilot for Fatal Nebraska Plane Crash

plane-crash(AP) — Federal investigators blame the pilot for the crash of a small plane nearly a year ago in northeast Nebraska.

The National Transportation Safety Board has ruled out mechanical problems for the April 27, 2013, crash about two miles southeast of Norfolk. The pilot, 26-year-old Dale Butler, and passenger, 24-year-old Amy Brobst, of Fort Collins, Colo., were killed.

The board report says the accident was caused by Butler’s decision “to fly at a low altitude and his subsequent failure to see and avoid power lines.” The report says the pilot might not have seen the lower power lines the plane struck because he may have been focused on a set of high tension power lines about a half-mile from the crash site.

(AP) — A Scottsbluff man has agreed to a plea deal in connection to a high-speed chase last month.

23-year-old Alejandro Paramo entered a no contest plea Wednesday to multiple charges, including operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest.

Paramo was arrested March 19 following a high-speed chase. He is accused of accelerating to speeds exceeding 100 mph. The chase ended when Paramo lost control and rolled his vehicle.

Police say they found weapons and methamphetamine at the scene of the accident.

Paramo is scheduled to be sentenced in early June.

SW Nebraska Fire Destroys Part of Former ‘Flame’ Bar

fireSTRATTON, Neb. (AP) — Officials say a fire destroyed part of the former Flame bar in the southwestern Nebraska community of Stratton.

Stratton Fire Chief Earl Denio said the fire broke out Monday evening in a building that had housed the Flame. The building hadn’t been used recently, and Denio says it was in disrepair.

Firefighters had to pull down bricks in the front of the building the reach the fire.

Denio says it’s unclear what caused the fire or how much damaged it caused. He says the rest of the building will need to be demolished.
