ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — As far as Peyton Manning is concerned, wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders isn’t the only offensive reinforcement summoned to help Denver get another crack at winning the Super Bowl.

Manning suggested Ryan Clady is almost like a free agent acquisition since he hardly played last year.

The star left tackle suffered a season-ending left foot injury in the second week of the season, not long after signing a five-year, $52.5 million contract.

Now he’s on the comeback trail. Although he has no timeline for getting back on the field, Clady said he’s eager to return to form and make up for all that time he missed last year.

Arbor Day History, Celebrations Rooted in Nebraska

arbor-day(AP) — People across the nation will observe Arbor Day on Friday, but no state will celebrate with as much fervor as Nebraska, where the celebration of trees got its start 142 years ago.

Like elsewhere, Nebraskans will plant trees and children will read poetry and join in coloring contests. But unlike other states many public offices will close — it’s the only state in which Arbor Day is a paid holiday for state workers.

Nebraska City’s J. Sterling Morton first proposed the tree-planting holiday in 1872. Morton was a newspaper editor and secretary of the Nebraska Territory.

The city’s celebration this year includes a parade, chili cook-off, home and garden show and a run.

The holiday typically attracts less attention in other states, where it can be overshadowed by Earth Day.

Police spokesman Victor Senties said a 56-year-old resident will be charged with capital murder in the deaths of two other men, ages 77 and 51.

Senties said it’s not clear what provoked the Tuesday night attack, but that the three men did not get along. A fourth roommate was asleep.

Irma Chavez, the daughter of 77-year-old Antonio Acosta, said her father had complained about the accused attacker repeatedly, including earlier on Tuesday.

She said the nursing home told her she could move her father to a different facility.

Broncos’ New Pass-Rush Tandem on Comeback Trail

Von Miller

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Denver Broncos pass-rushers DeMarcus Ware and Von Miller are a lot alike. Both collect lots of sacks, hefty paychecks and plenty of accolades. The two are also on the comeback trail after offseason surgeries following a disappointing season.

Ware had his right elbow repaired in February, a few weeks before the Dallas Cowboys released him in a salary cap move.

Ware amassed a franchise-best 117 sacks for the Cowboys since getting drafted in the first round in 2005, but he got to the quarterback a career-low six times last season and missed games for the first time in his nine-year career with a thigh injury.

Miller’s season began with a six-game drug suspension and ended with a torn right ACL on Dec. 22. He finished with a career-low five sacks.

Morales Leads Rockies to 2-1 Win over Giants

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Nolan Arenado hit a go-ahead homer leading off the fifth and Franklin Morales outdueled Madison Bumgarner, lifting the Colorado Rockies to a 2-1 win over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night.

Troy Tulowitzki also added a solo shot for the Rockies, who have hit seven homers in two nights against the Giants.

Morales (2-1) was masterful on the mound as he allowed five hits over seven innings, which matches the longest outing of his career. The left-hander’s only mistake was a hanging slider to Hunter Pence in the fifth. It was Pence’s second homer of the season.

LaTroy Hawkins got the final two outs in a rocky ninth for his sixth save in as many chances.

New Policy Guides Use of Pinnacle Bank Arena Suite

pinnacle-bank-arena(AP) — A new policy developed by the mayor’s staff will guide use and rental of the city’s suite at the Pinnacle Bank Arena, which opened last fall.

The city will use the suite to promote economic development, honor community heroes and provide opportunities for nonprofit groups that serve the poor.

The city also will rent the suite to individuals or groups and use the money to help pay costs arising from when it’s used without charge by other groups.

The new policy says “broad usage of the suite is encouraged, and it will not be primarily for government officials.”
