NSAA Releases Soccer District Pairings, NPHS Boys and Girls go on the Road

The Nebraska School Activities Association released the 2014 Class A district soccer pairings on Wednesday and both the North Platte High School boys and girls will go on the road for next week’s postseason play.

The North Platte Bulldogs boys soccer team is 19th in the NSAA wildcard point standings. The Dawgs currently have a record of 5-9, which has changed due to Lexington having to forfeit all of their games this season because of an ineligible player. North Platte lost 2-1 to Lexington early in the season, without the forfeit the Dawgs would be 4-10. With the 19th place in the point standings North Platte earned a No. 3 seed in the district tournament. The Dawgs will travel to Grand Island, who is hosting the A-6 District. North Platte as the No. 3 seed will play second-seeded Papillion La Vista South (9-5) at 7:00 pm on Monday, May 5. The host school and No. 1 seeded Grand Island (9-5) will play No. 4 Lincoln High (6-9) at 5:00 pm on Monday. The winners of the first round games will advance to the district final and play for a chance to go to the Class A State Tournament on Thursday. The district final will be played at Memorial Stadium in Grand Island at 7:00 pm Thursday, May 8. The boys A-6 bracket can be seen below.

The North Platte Lady Bulldogs are 10-4 on the season and sit 10th in the NSAA wildcard point standing. The Lady Dawgs earned a No. 2 seed in the A-5 District, which will be played at Ted Baldwin Park in Kearney. North Platte will play third-seeded Omaha Burke (5-10) at 7:00 pm Monday, May 5. The host school and No. 1 seeded Kearney Lady Bearcats (13-3) will play No. 4 Lincoln High (4-10) at 5:00 pm on Monday, May 5. The district final for the girls will be played Wednesday, May 7 in Kearney at 6:00 pm with the winners of the first round playing each other. The girls A-5 bracket can be seen below.

The North Platte boys are led by senior Brady Mason with 10 goals and 23 points total this season. The Lady Dawgs have four players with over 20 points on the season, including senior Taylor Banark. Banark leads the team with 20 goals and 19 assists for a total of 59 points. Senior Madalynn Doughty also has 10 goals and eight assists for a total of 28 points.

Evelyn M. Hepler Wonch

Evelyn M. Hepler Wonch, 88, of North Platte, passed away April 27, 2014 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center. She was born Jan. 29, 1926 to Bill and Blanche (Lindauer) Johnson at Sutherland, NE. She went to school at Elsie and North Platte. She married Kelly Morgan in 1942, and to this union two children were born, Glenda and Rick Morgan. Evelyn was united in marriage to Chester “Jake” Hepler in 1946. To this union two children were born, Paulette and Ron Hepler. In 1971, she married LeRoy Wonch. Evelyn was involved in the restaurant and café business all her life including business, Joe’s Supper Club, Roger and Millie Grosh, N.P. Country Club, Airport Inn, Ramada Inn, Richard Skinner and Larry Hobbs. Her greatest joy was being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by two children, Paulette (Bill) Hartnell and Ron (Karen) Hepler; daughter-in-law, Sandra (Don) Whited; seven grandchildren, Tanya (Paul) Norrid, Chad (Sonja) Morgan, Lance (Kyanna) Hartnell, Erin (Eric) Eldridge, Jeb (Kate) Hartnell, Jason and Jacob (Kelsi) Hepler; eleven great grandchildren, Taylor and Tyler McIntosh, Tymber and Zack Norrid, Colt, Wyatt and Garrett Morgan, Lane Hartnell, Emma, Abby and Cade Eldridge; a sister, Pat (Ken) Klingsporn; special niece and nephews, Kelly, Matt (Rayne) and his son, Aiden, Dan Klingsporn, and his children, Shelbi, Cobi, Kyli and Bo, Cyntha and Natalie Johnson, Tammie Bias ; three step children, Chris, Melanie and Mike (Jeremy) Wonch. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Richard Morgan; a daughter, Glenda Coye; a brother, Gary Johnson; a sister, Mary Bucholtz; and a grandson, Shawn David Hartnell. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Messiah Lutheran Church for Ministry to Others. Visitation will be from 9am to 8pm Thursday and Friday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8pm Friday. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2013 at Messiah Lutheran Church. A private family inurnment will take place prior to services. Minnesota Man Convicted of Murder for Shooting Teen Intruders

(AP) — A Minnesota homeowner who shot and killed two teenagers during a break-in has been convicted of premeditated murder.

Byron Smith had claimed he was simply defending himself during the break-in at his home in the small city of Little Falls on Thanksgiving Day 2012.

Smith’s attorney said the 65-year-old was fearful after previous burglaries.

But prosecutors argued that Smith waited in his basement and intended to kill the teens. A total of nine shots were fired at 17-year-old Nick Brady and 18-year-old Haile (HAY’-lee) Kifer.

Minnesota law allows a person to use deadly force for defense, but that action must be considered reasonable. Jurors found him guilty of both first-degree and second-degree murder charges.

Mining Firm to Resume Exploring Rare Mineral Site Near Elk Creek

(AP) — A Canadian mining firm is preparing to resume drilling samples from beneath southeast Nebraska to determine if it will be feasible to build a mine to harvest a valuable and rare heat-resistant element.

NioCorp Developments said Tuesday it has requested bids from drilling companies for this summer’s exploration of the niobium deposit near Elk Creek.

NioCorp said last month it had raised $5.5 million to pay for this next phase of drilling and assessment.

The U.S. currently imports nearly all the niobium that’s used in this country to harden steel and make it more heat-resistant for industrial uses.

NioCorp previously estimated that more than 100 tons of niobium rests several hundred feet below the ground, but it’s not yet clear whether a mine will be built.

Elk Creek is about 45 miles east of Beatrice.

NSP Promotes Motorcycle Safety Awareness

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness month and the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) is reminding all motorists of the need to “share the road” in order to prevent motorcycle crashes, deaths and injuries.

“The warmer weather typically means an increase in motorcycle traffic on our roadways,” said Colonel David Sankey, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Motorists are reminded to be alert at all times. By increasing our awareness, we can help to prevent crashes.”

According to statistics from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety, to date in 2014, three people have been killed in crashes involving motorcycles. During 2013, 14 people lost their lives in motorcycle crashes on Nebraska roads.

The NSP reminds the motoring public that motorcycles are vehicles with the same rights and privileges as any vehicle on the road. With a much smaller profile, motorcycles are often hidden in a vehicle’s blind spot or missed in a quick look. Motorists are encouraged to always make a visual check for motorcycles by checking mirrors or blind spots before entering or leaving a lane of traffic and at intersections.

Motorcyclists are reminded they must obey the same rules of the road as the rest of the motoring public. Nebraska law requires motorcycle riders and passengers to wear a DOT-compliant helmet. A Class M (motorcycle) license or Class M endorsement on a regular operator’s license is also required.

Deaths from US Storms Reach 37

(AP) — At least 37 deaths have been reported from a large, stubborn storm system making its way through the South after pummeling the central U.S.

On Wednesday, officials in Georgia reported one death in Athens. Police say winds pushed over a tree that crashed into a car, killing its driver at a mobile home park.

In Florida, with severe flooding in the Panhandle, the Highway Patrol said Wednesday that a woman who drove her car into high water died.

Those deaths brought the total from four days of storms to 37.

Mississippi and Arkansas saw the most fatalities, as well as the most destruction from violent tornadoes.

Deaths also were reported in Alabama, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Iowa.
