Boy Killed in Neb. Skid Steer Loader Accident Identified

(AP) — Authorities have released the name of a 9-year-old boy who died after he was struck and pinned by a skid steer loader near Greenwood in eastern Nebraska.

The boy was identified Sunday as Grant Johnson. He was a third-grade student at Ashland Elementary School.

Authorities say the boy stepped into the path of the machine as it was backed up around 4 p.m. Saturday. The machine was being used by 35-year-old Augusto Figueroa to clear brush and debris in a grove of trees.

Capt. Dave Lamprecht with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office says the death appears to be a “total accident.”

3 Bayard City Workers Charged with Theft

(AP) — Three city workers have been arrested and charged in the theft and sale of scrap metal from the Nebraska Panhandle city of Bayard.

Court documents say Bayard streets superintendent Kevin Wurm told two of his workers to sell the metal and evenly divide the proceeds between the three of them. Authorities say three loads of scrap metal were sold earlier this month to a salvage yard in Minatare (mihn-uh-TEHR’) for a total of nearly $940.

The 44-year-old Wurm is charged with felony theft. Twenty-nine-year-old Joshua Buskirk and 31-year-old Joshua Kinney are charged with felony aiding and abetting.

Online court records don’t list attorneys for any of the three men.

Knights Named to The World Herald’s All-Nebraska Teams, Montalvo & Merritt First-Team

North Platte – Ethan Montalvo and DaVontaye Merritt were both named to The World Herald’s All-Nebraska Junior College teams published by the Omaha World Herald over the weekend. Montalvo is joined by teammates Cameron Williams and Tim Simmons on the second-team along with Jake Maslo and Marco Pascolo as Honorable Mentions. Merritt is joined by Courtney Widick on the second-team along with Jordan Dickerson and April Stull as Honorable Mention.

The First-Team All-Nebraska selection for Ethan Montalvo, a sophomore from Omaha Bryan, adds to his long list of honors from the season. Montalvo was named an All-American Honorable Mention, All-Region IX, All-Region IX Tournament Team and All-NCCAC. Montalvo averaged 18.9 ppg and is the Knights 5th All-Time leading scorer with 1,171 career points. Montalvo has signed to play basketball at Division I Texas State University next year.

Tim Simmons, a sophomore from Stamford, Conn., was named Second-Team All-Nebraska after averaging 11.8 points per game for the Knights and being their defensive stopper. Simmons was also named to the All-Region IX Tournament Team and All-NCCAC Second-Team. Simmons is the Knights 40th All-Time leading scorer with 700 career points.

Cameron Williams, a freshman from Omaha South, was also named Second-Team All-Nebraska after averaging 13.7 points per game for the Knights. Williams was also named to the All-NCCAC First-Team. Williams scored 439 points during his freshman campaign.

Jake Maslo, a sophomore from Omaha Bryan, and Marco Pascolo, a freshman from Udine, Italy, were both named All-Nebraska Honorable Mention. Maslo averaged 6.5 points per game for the Knights while Pascolo scored 11.0 points per game.

DaVontaye Merritt, a sophomore from Plantation, Florida, was named First-Team All-Nebraska after averaging 16.0 points per game for the Lady Knights. Merritt was also named to the All-Region IX Division II Team, All-Region IX Division II Tournament Team and the All-NCCAC Team. Merritt is the Lady Knights 3rd All-Time leading scorer with 863 career points.

Courtney Widick, a sophomore from Brady, was named Second-Team All-Nebraska after averaging 9.5 points per game for the Lady Knights. Widick was also named to the All-Region IX Division II Team, All-Region IX Division II Tournament Team and the All-NCCAC Team. Widick is the Lady Knights 18th All-Time leading scorer with 570 career points.

Jordan Dickerson, a sophomore from Westminster, Colo., and April Stull, a freshman from Sweeney, Texas, were both named All-Nebraska Honorable Mention. Dickerson averaged 8.6 points per game for the Lady Knights while Stull scored 11.3 points per game.

16-Year-Old Survives in Wheel Well of Maui Flight

(AP) — FBI officials say a 16-year-old boy stowed away in the wheel well of a flight from California to Hawaii, surviving the trip halfway across the Pacific Ocean unharmed despite frigid temperatures at 38,000 feet and a lack of oxygen.

FBI spokesman Tom Simon in Honolulu told The Associated Press on Sunday night that the boy was questioned by the FBI after being discovered on the tarmac at the Maui airport with no identification.

Simon says security footage from the San Jose airport verified that the boy from Santa Clara, Calif., hopped a fence to get to Hawaiian Airlines Flight 45 on Sunday morning. Simon says the child had run away from his family.

Simon says the boy was released to child protective services and not charged with a crime.

Teen Accused in Scotts Bluff Co. Jail Attack Will Be Tried as Adult

(AP) — The case against a 16-year-old who is accused of helping with the fatal assault of a Western Nebraska jail guard earlier this year will remain in adult court.

District Judge Travis O’Gorman rejected a motion to move Guy Eagle Elk’s case to juvenile court.

Eagle Elk is accused of aiding in the assault that killed Scotts Bluff County Corrections Officer Amanda Baker on Feb. 14. He has pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors say Eagle Elk told a fellow inmate how to choke Baker into unconsciousness so her jail keys could be taken, and Eagle Elk encouraged the other inmate to carry out the attack.

Eagle Elk, of Lisco, Neb., has said he didn’t intend for the guard to be seriously hurt. He is scheduled for a July trial.

Doris Marie Muchlinski, 88, of North Platte passed away on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014 at Centennial Park Retirement Village. Doris graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in 1943 and St Francis Hospital School of Nursing at Grand Island in 1946. She received a B.S. in Nursing from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. in 1956. Miss M. worked in hospitals in Syracuse, NY; Utica, NY; Honolulu, Hawaii and Kalaupapa, Molokai, Hawaii. After returning home she worked at Linden Manor Nursing Home for twelve years, retiring September 1, 1990. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parrish, Daughters of Charity and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed singing in the choir, having been a member of many since grade school. She is survived by cousins, Eloise and Les Weil, Linda and Bill Smith, Mike LaVelle, Christy LaVelle; special friends, Charles and Toni Barron and Pat Sexton; and her parish family. She was preceded in death by her parents, a twin sister, Ardis; a sister, Irene, and two brothers, Vincent and Paul. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 24, 2014 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. Rosary will be 9:30 a.m. prior to the mass at the church. Burial will be at the North Platte Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Carpenter Memorial Church. Memorials may be sent to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church Endowment Trust or The North Platte Animal Shelter. Online condolences may be shared at www.carpentermemorial.com. McCook CC Students Rack Up Awards at Phi Beta Lambda Conference

Students from McCook Community College recently attended the Phi Beta Lambda State Leadership Conference, and came home with a plethora of awards.

The conference was held in Kearney April 10-12.

Students participated from 13 local Phi Beta Lambda chapters across the state of Nebraska, and the McCook Community College Epsilon Alpha Pi Chapter came away with the following awards listed in order by place:

American Meb Keflezighi Wins Boston Marathon

BOSTON (AP) — American Meb Keflezighi has won the Boston Marathon, a year after a bombing at the finish line left three dead and more than 260 people injured.

Keflezighi is a former New York City Marathon champion and Olympic medalist. He ran the 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to the finish on Boylston Street in Boston’s Back Bay on Monday in 2 hours, 8 minutes, 37 seconds.

Keflezighi held off Wilson Chebet of Kenya who finished 11 seconds behind. The 38-year-old from San Diego looked over his shoulder several times over the final mile. After realizing he wouldn’t be caught, he raised his sunglasses, began pumping his right fist and made the sign of the cross.

No U.S. runner had won the race since Lisa Larsen-Weidenbach took the women’s title in 1985; the last American man to win was Greg Meyer in 1983.

BOSTON (AP) — Rita Jeptoo of Kenya successfully defended the Boston Marathon title she said she could not enjoy a year ago after the fatal bombings.

Jeptoo finished Monday’s race in a course-record 2 hours, 18 minutes, 57 seconds. She becomes the seventh three-time Boston Marathon champion.

Jeptoo broke away from a group of five runners at the 23-mile mark. Buzunesh Deba finished second with an unofficial time of 2:19:59.

American Shalane Flanagan finished seventh after leading for more than half the race. She took a gamble by setting the early pace. She ran her first mile in 5 minutes, 11 seconds, but fell back on the Newton Hills about 21 miles into the race.
