Eastern Nebraska Brush Fire Forces Evacuations

fire(AP) — A large brush fire in eastern Nebraska forced the evacuation of a farm and educational complex that houses dozens of animals.

Fire crews from Omaha and Bellevue spent hours on Saturday fighting the blaze, which had flames that reached 20 to 25 feet high. Crews brought the fire under control, but were still working Sunday morning to tamp down smoldering hot spots.

The fire Fontenelle Forest in Bellevue was between a Missouri River levee and nearby railroad tracks. It forced the evacuation of the Gifford Farm, an educational complex that houses dozens of animals. Bellevue firefighters were expected to meet with farm employees Sunday to determine when the workers and animals can return.

The fire’s origin has not been confirmed.

Lincoln Hires Law Firm for Union Negotiations

lincoln-nebraska(AP) — Lincoln city officials have hired a local law firm to handle union contract negotiations for the second bargaining season in a row.

John Hewitt, an attorney with the Cline Williams law firm, will act as the city’s chief negotiator in bargaining with the five unions whose contracts end this summer.

Hewitt will also help the city develop goals and proposals, and advise on strategy and state law. The $125,000 contract with his firm also requires that he be available to talk with the council or at news conferences.

The city has paid Cline Williams $146,021 over the past two years for similar services.

Mayor Chris Beutler says the city uses a private-sector negotiator to avoid potential conflicts of interest.

Country Singer Kevin Sharp

kevin-sharp(AP) — Kevin Sharp, a country music singer who recorded multiple chart-topping songs and survived a well-publicized battle with cancer, has died. He was 43.

His sister Mary Huston says Sharp died in Fair Oaks, Calif., at 10:49 p.m. Saturday of complications from past stomach surgeries and digestive issues.

Sharp gained fame with the release of “Nobody Knows,” a single on his 1996 debut album “Measure of a Man.” He released two other albums, “Love Is” in 1998 and “Make A Wish” in 2005.

Born in 1970 in Redding, Calif., Sharp was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, which he overcame after two years of chemotherapy and radiation.

Sharp became a motivational speaker, a spokesman for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and wrote “Tragedy’s Gift,” a 2004 book about fighting cancer.

Colorado Pot Law Frustrates Nebraska Law Enforcement

24-lbs-of-pot(AP) — Some Nebraska law enforcement officers are frustrated that their agencies have to bear the cost of jailing and prosecuting people for drug violations tied to Colorado’s legalized marijuana.

Western Nebraska agencies are increasingly busy because of cases involving Colorado pot.

Deuel County Sheriff Adam Hayward says many officers in the region have come to believe that Colorado should shoulder some of the cost. But Hayward says political leaders in Lincoln don’t appear to want to get involved, and he’s not sure what Nebraska law enforcement can do.

Marijuana use is legal in Colorado, but it remains an illicit drug under federal law and in all seven states that border Colorado.

Teen Who Escaped in Hastings Turns Himself In

hastings-police-good(AP) — Hastings police say a 17-year-old who escaped from custody has turned himself in to authorities.

The boy returned to authorities around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday. Police say he escaped around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday as deputies were taking him from a squad car to the Adams County Courthouse. Court records say he had a court appearance for allegedly violating the terms of his probation.

Court records say the teen pleaded no contest in July to a second-degree assault charge. A judge sentenced him to two years of intense supervised probation.

The Associated Press generally doesn’t name juveniles accused of crimes.

In Colorado, Pot Holiday Goes Mainstream

colorado-420(AP) — The 4/20 stoner holiday is going mainstream in Colorado.

April 20 has traditionally been a day for marijuana activists to defiantly light up to protest their drug of choice being outlawed. But Colorado has legalized pot. This weekend is filled with marijuana-themed activities that will culminate at a festival at a park in downtown Denver.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to smoke marijuana at 4:20 p.m. MDT Sunday.

There is heavy security at the event after a shooting marred it last year. This year the festival is being run by a professional event company. It’s short on pro-legalization speeches and instead crowded with vendor booths. A separate marijuana industry event called the Cannabis Cup north of downtown is also drawing thousands.

Same Issues, New Faces for 2015 Neb. Legislative Session

NE Legislature(AP) — Nebraska lawmakers will face many of the same issues in 2015 that they failed to pass this year, but more than one-third of the senators will be new.

The session that ended Thursday was the last for 17 of the Legislature’s 49 members, who are prohibited from seeking re-election because of term limits. With a wave of new members every two years, senators and lobbyists get a fresh shot at passing legislation that was defeated in previous years.

Speaker of the Legislature Greg Adams says the new wave of senators could swing the debates on issues such as taxes, capital punishment and Medicaid.

Researchers Study Section of Nebraska Sod Home

UNL(AP) — A team of University of Nebraska-Lincoln researchers is examining part of a 110-year-old sod house.

The researchers are working with a 4-foot-by-8-foot section of a wall from a house built in Custer County in 1902 or 1903.

Professor Dave Wedin says the sod house section offers a rare chance to study plant and soil samples from more than 100 years ago.

Other researchers will try to learn more about the bugs and other pests that bothered pioneers.

Several students from schools in Custer County have also been able to participate in the research. Ansley Public Schools teacher Brandon Grosserode says the project taught students about the history of the area.

Lyles’ Pitching, Reversed Call Key Rockies’ Win

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Jordan Lyles pitched effectively into the eighth inning and Colorado was aided by a reversed call that produced its first run in the Rockies’ 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night.

Justin Morneau also drove in two runs the old fashioned way, connecting for his third home run of the season in the fourth after Carlos Gonzalez began the inning with a single.

Lyles allowed one unearned run on five hits in seven innings in winning his third straight, equaling a career best. LaTroy Hawkins pitched a hitless ninth for his fifth save in five chances.

Kyle Kendrick went seven innings and allowed three runs on six hits in a solid outing but could not avoid a seventh straight loss, dating to Aug. 11.

Landeskog Leads Avs to 4-2 Win over Wild

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoDENVER (AP) — Gabriel Landeskog scored twice and Semyon Varlamov stopped 30 shots, lifting the Colorado Avalanche to a 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night and a 2-0 series lead.

The Wild were unable to contain the quickness of teenager Nathan MacKinnon, who had a goal and three assists. Stastny, the star of Game 1, also had a goal and three assists. His empty-netter sealed the win after Marco Scandella made it a one-goal game with 1:19 remaining.

Charlie Coyle also scored early for the Wild.

Game 3 is Monday in Minnesota.
