Douglas Co. Judge Reprimanded by State’s High Court

ne-supreme-court(AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has issued a public reprimand for a Douglas County District judge for intervening in a friend’s drunken driving case.

The high court found that Judge Gregory Schatz improperly intervened in the DUI case involving a friend, Omaha attorney Michael Davlin.

The judicial complaint said that in August 2012, Schatz was contacted by Davlin’s girlfriend — a Douglas County Court official — who tearfully relayed that Davlin was in an Omaha jail after driving drunk and hitting a tree.

The complaint says Schatz contacted the jail and used his judicial authority to have Davlin released without paying a bond.

In response to the complaint, Schatz said he understood what he did was wrong and that he has since taken a judicial ethics course.

Tulo Backs Chatwood and Rockies Beat Phillies 12-1

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Troy Tulowitzki hit a three-run home run after No. 3 hitter Carlos Gonzalez was intentionally walked in front of him, Tyler Chatwood pitched seven strong innings for his first win of the season, and the Colorado Rockies beat the Philadelphia Phillies 12-1 Friday night.

Tulowitzki went 3 for 3 on the night, drove in five runs and drew a key walk during the Rockies’ four-run first inning. Drew Stubbs and Charlie Blackmon added three hits apiece. The 18 hits represented a season high for the Rockies and their run total matched a season high.

Chatwood (1-0), who missed the first two weeks of the season with a left hamstring strain, allowed one unearned run on two hits in his second start of the season and first at home.

Phillies starter Jonathan Pettibone (0-1) went four innings and allowed eight runs on nine hits.

TNT’s Sager to Miss NBA Playoffs Due to Leukemia

Craig SagerATLANTA (AP) — TNT analyst Craig Sager will miss the NBA playoffs as he undergoes treatment for leukemia.

A sideline reporter famous for his brightly colored suits, Sager’s sense of humor was intact in a statement released by Turner Sports on Friday.

Sager describes the postseason as “my favorite time of year – city to city, round by round, 40 games in 40 nights.” He says that “a dramatic turn has matched me with acute myeloid leukemia. From the sidelines to being sidelined, 40 veins and 40 electrolytes.”

Sager jokes about the often-terse in-game interviews with San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich: “Too bad, I had some probing questions for Pop.”

Johnson Rescues Avs with Big Save Against Wild

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoDENVER (AP) — Erik Johnson saved the night for the Colorado Avalanche with his quick feet and thinking.

The defenseman raced from the blue line to the goal line and swatted away a puck just three inches shy of sliding in for a game-sealing, empty-net goal by Minnesota late in regulation.

His stop during a 5-4 overtime win may have been overshadowed by the theatrics of Paul Stastny, who tied the game with 13.4 seconds left and then scored the OT winner.

But Johnson’s play certainly wasn’t lost on the Avalanche as they take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series into Game 2 on Saturday.

Stastny said: “If that doesn’t happen, that hustle out of E.J., we’re not here in this moment.”

Royals put Outfielder Dyson on Bereavement List

Jarrod Dyson Kansas City RoyalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals have placed outfielder Jarrod Dyson on the bereavement list and recalled versatile Jimmy Paredes from Triple-A Omaha.

The Royals were already thin in the outfield after placing Lorenzo Cain on the disabled list with a strained groined earlier in the week.

Kansas City made the moves before Friday night’s game against Minnesota.

Manager Ned Yost said he expects Dyson to return Monday in Cleveland.

Paredes was claimed off waivers from Baltimore in February, and was hitting .319 at Omaha. Yost views him as capable of playing second base, third base and any of the outfield spots.

In other injury news, Royals left-hander Bruce Chen said he’s ready to pitch against the Twins on Saturday. He had his regular turn pushed back from Thursday because of a sore back.

Court: Lancaster County Not Liable for Bus Crash

bus-accident(AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has reversed a lower court’s ruling that found Lancaster County partly liable for a 2009 school bus crash.

Jeff Hall sued Lancaster County District Court and Norris School District in 2010, saying he had incurred more than $350,000 in medical expenses for his injuries from the Aug. 24, 2009 crash. Hall was driving a pickup that collided with the bus at a rural intersection where a stop sign was missing.

Lancaster County District Judge Steven Burns found the school district 50 percent liable, the county 20 percent liable and Hall 30 percent liable. Hall was awarded $770,000.

But on Friday, the state’s high court said Burns was wrong to conclude that the county’s failure to have a road sign inspection policy helped cause the accident.

Nebraska Joins Wildfire Compact with Other States

Wildfire(AP) — Gov. Dave Heineman has signed a bill that will have Nebraska join forces with Colorado, Wyoming and the Dakotas in fighting wildfires.

Heineman announced Friday that he has designated Al Berndt, assistant director of the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency, to represent Nebraska in the Great Plains Interstate Fire Compact. Heineman approved the bill earlier this week.

The compact lets member states share their firefighters and equipment in an emergency without going through the federal government. The compact requires each state to choose a person who is responsible for forest fire control.

The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Davis of Hyannis, says pooling the states’ resources could lead to faster response times in remote and hard-to-reach areas of Nebraska.

Wyatt Earp Gun Sells for $225K at Auction

wyatt-earp(AP) — A gun thought to have been carried by Wyatt Earp during the famous O.K. Corral shootout in Tombstone has sold for $225,000.

A telephone bidder in New Mexico made the winning bid for the Colt .45 revolver Thursday night.

J. Levine Auction & Appraisal officials say an auction of numerous items related to Earp and his family in Scottsdale, Ariz., brought in more than $445,000.

The auction house initially valued the Colt between $100,000 and $150,000.

The items belonged to the estate of Glenn Boyer, an author of several books on Earp. Boyer died in February 2013.

Some have questioned the items’ authenticity while others say Boyer was a credible researcher.

A Chandler man spent $150,000 on a shotgun owned by Earp, a family archive and other items.

Heineman to Sign Nebraska Autism Coverage Bill

dave-heineman(AP) — Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman says he plans to sign a bill that would require some health insurers to offer coverage for autism screenings and therapy.

Heineman will hold a public bill signing on Monday along with autism advocates at the Capitol. Insurance plans under the new law would cover up to 25 hours per week of behavioral health treatment, and insured children would continue to qualify for coverage until they turn 21 years old.

Sen. Colby Coash of Lincoln says he introduced the bill because he has seen the benefits the treatment can provide for children.

Certain insurance plans will be exempt from the autism requirement, including those that are sold in the individual and small group markets under the new federal health care marketplace.
