Rat and Beaver Lakes Aquatic Habitat Project to Begin

Nebraska_game_and_parksLINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has recently installed a temporary control structure below Rat and Beaver lakes located in Cherry County. This structure will allow the lakes to be lowered 18 inches over several months in preparation for a complete lake rehabilitation project.

Improvements to the boat launch area, a complete fish renovation, and installation of two fish barriers below Rat and Beaver lakes will be completed by late 2014 or early 2015.

Currently, the Rat and Beaver fishery is dominated by common carp. A complete fish renovation is required to restore a more productive sport fish fishery. Fish barriers will be installed below the lakes to prevent common carp movement up into the lakes. Anglers, hunters, and outdoor enthusiasts should see improved water quality, increased aquatic vegetation, increased waterfowl usage and an improved fishery. Once the project is completed, bluegill, largemouth bass, yellow perch, and black crappie will be stocked in the lake.

The Rat and Beaver lakes project will be funded by the Nebraska Aquatic Habitat Stamp, which is included in the cost of every fishing permit.

For more information about this project, contact Zac Brashears at the Valentine State Fish Hatchery at 402-376-8080.

(AP) — A 48-year-old Grand Island man has now been found competent to stand trial on charges that he tried to kill his estranged wife.

Jesus Parra returned to court on Wednesday and was declared competent, as long as he continues to take his medication.

In February he’d been declared mentally incompetent and was sent to the state psychiatric hospital in Lincoln for treatment. He was to remain there until “the disability is removed.”

Parra already has pleaded not guilty to weapons charges and charges of assault, child abuse and attempted murder. Police say he attacked and injured Rosa Olivas de Parra at her home in April 2013. Police say the couple’s adult daughter was cut while trying to intervene.

Hobby Lobby May Soon Be Coming to a City Near You

hobby lobbyWe’ve heard it countless times, “North Platte needs a Hobby Lobby.”

Soon, wishful thinkers may see their shopping dreams become reality.

Hobby Lobby has signed a letter of intent to build a store in North Platte.

However, don’t get too excited.  Developers and city leaders say there are still a lot of pieces of the puzzle that must come together before the deal is final.  On the top of that list is funding and a building site.

Hobby Lobby stores are a chain of retail arts and crafts stores based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and were formally called Hobby Lobby Creative Centers.  The stores are wholly owned by the corporation and not a franchise chain.

Residents of North Platte are extremely excited about the potential new business citing job creation, less trips to Kearney and, quite simply, a great place to by crafty goods.

Officials say Hobby Lobby could potentially be ready for business by the Fall of 2015…if everything goes as planned.

Hobby Lobby currently has Nebraska locations in Grand Island, Kearney, Lincoln, Norfolk, Omaha and Papillion.
