Players Championship Changes to 3-Hole Playoff

PGA-LogoPONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The Players Championship is changing this year to a three-hole aggregate playoff involving the closing stretch at the TPC Sawgrass.

PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem announced the new format Wednesday.

The Players Championship previously was a sudden-death playoff that began on the par-3 17th hole, famous for having an island green. Starting this year, a playoff would take place on the par-5 16th hole, the 17th, and the par-4 18th. If players are still tied, it would go to sudden death starting on the 17th.

The Players Championship is May 8-11. It becomes the only regular PGA Tour event to use a playoff format that is not sudden death.

Clippers Beat Nuggets 117-105 for Record 57th Win

Denver_NuggetsLOS ANGELES (AP) — Blake Griffin scored 24 points while picking up his 16th technical, and the Los Angeles Clippers led all the way in beating the Denver Nuggets 117-105 on Tuesday night for their franchise-record 57th victory of the season.

Chris Paul had 21 points and 10 assists, and J.J. Redick added 18 points in the Clippers’ finale at home, where they went 34-7 for another franchise mark. DeAndre Jordan had 13 points and 16 rebounds.

The win kept the Clippers in the hunt for the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference playoffs. They would need to win at Portland and Oklahoma City would need to lose to Detroit on Wednesday night for the Clippers to claim the second spot. Otherwise, they will remain the third seed.

Los Angeles will have to get by without Griffin on the road since his 16th tech triggered a league-mandated one-game suspension.

Nicasio Solid in Rockies’ 3-2 Win over Padres

colorado-rockiesSAN DIEGO (AP) — Juan Nicasio pitched six solid innings and the Colorado Rockies recorded a rare road victory with a 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night.

Nicasio (2-0) limited the light-hitting Padres to two runs on six hits. The right-hander allowed hits to San Diego’s first four batters in the first inning as the Padres took a 2-0 lead. He gave up just two hits after that.

LaTroy Hawkins, the fourth Rockies reliever, pitched the ninth inning for his second save.

Colorado won for just the third time in nine road games this season.

Nicasio ran his career mark to 3-0 in six starts against San Diego with a 2.89 ERA.

The Rockies scratched together a single run in three separate innings, including the go-ahead run in the fifth off Robbie Erlin (1-1).

Police: Neb. Child Got Stuck Inside Claw Machine

boy in claw machine(AP) — Authorities in Lincoln say a toddler was not hurt after getting stuck inside a claw crane machine at a bowling alley.

Lincoln police say a woman called Monday afternoon to report her 3-year-old son missing from her apartment.

Authorities later discovered the boy had ended up inside a claw crane machine at a bowling alley across the street. Patrons at the bowling alley spotted the boy playing with stuffed animals inside the machine.

The machine’s vendor was contacted to let the boy out. He was reunited with his mother a short time later.

Police say the mother was not cited because she immediately contacted police about the missing child.

FDA OKs Merch Tablet to Reduce Grass Allergies

fda(AP) — Merck & Co. says the Food and Drug Administration has approved its new tablet for grass allergies, Grastek, for patients five to 65 years old.

Meant as an alternative to weekly allergy shots, the tablet dissolves under the tongue. Taken daily for a few years, it gradually reduces sensitivity to common grasses, instead of temporarily relieving symptoms including sneezing, runny nose, and itchy, watery eyes.

Merck, based in Whitehouse Station, N.J., will market the tablet in North America. Its partner, ALK-Abello, sells it in Europe as Grazas.

Merck said Grastek will be available in U.S. pharmacies in late April. However, it’s best to start taking it three months before grass pollen season begins.

The drug can cause severe allergic reactions and shouldn’t be used by patients with severe asthma.

Farmers Off to Slow Start Planting Corn Crop

usda(AP) — Spring planting across the nation’s Corn Belt is sputtering because the soil remains too soggy or cold for effective seeding.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says 3 percent of the corn crop is sown. That’s half the pace of last year when one of the wettest springs on record got farmers off to the slowest start in decades.

In Illinois, just 1 percent of this year’s corn has been planted. That’s one-tenth of the average pace of the previous five years. The USDA says farmers in other key corn-producing states are equally idle.

Farmers still are upbeat, saying they still have some time to get the job done. The USDA says corn sowing traditionally begins in mid-April. It’s typically in full swing from April 21 through May 23.
