Road Work to Close Hwy 30 from Cozad to Lexington

NDORRoad work continues to pick up in the area.

The Nebraska Department of Roads says Highway 30 will be closed to thru traffic beginning April 21st.

Crews will begin resurfacing the road which will include:

  • Milling the existing 24” surface.
  • Placement of 5″ concrete on the 24″ driving surface.
  • Replacement of existing County Road intersections with concrete.
  • Overlay of the existing surfaced shoulders and private driveways to match the new concrete roadway.
  • Placement of rumble strips.

NDOR officials say the speed limit in the construction zone will be reduced to 35 mph.

Residents and landowners that access their property from Highway 30 between Cozad and Lexington will still be able to do so during the project, and the road will still be accessible to local traffic.

Unauthorized vehicles traveling in the construction zone will be subject to a fine of $300.

NDOR says all thru traffic will be required to use Interstate 80.

The work is scheduled to be completed by the fall of 2014.

First Women Move to Army Platoon Artillery Jobs

army(AP) — First Lieutenant Kelly Requa (REE-kwa) is breaking new ground at Fort Bragg.

She’s one of a small number of female lieutenants brought into the 3rd Battalion of the 321st Field Artillery Regiment to lead a cannon platoon at the North Carolina base.

For the women, the integration into the once men-only artillery platoons means more pressure and scrutiny. For the men, it means more training for sexual-assault prevention and awareness, and more lectures on respect, team building and moral character.

By January 2016, the U.S. military must open all combat jobs to women or explain why any must remain closed. The Army in November began assigning female officers to lead the cannon platoons and plans to open other jobs, including those of crew members within field artillery units.

Wild Pitch, Throwing Error gives Padres Win

colorado-rockiesSAN DIEGO (AP) — The Padres scored twice in the eighth inning on Rex Brothers’ wild pitch and catcher Wilin Rosario’s errant throw back to the plate, lifting San Diego to a 5-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Monday night.

The Rockies held a one-run lead when Brothers walked the bases loaded with two outs. Facing Yasmani Grandal, Brothers unleashed a wild throw. As Edwin Rosario retrieved the pitch, he turned and threw wildly back to Brothers covering the plate.

The ball was out of Brothers’ reach as Xavier Nady scored and, as the ball sailed past the mound, Seth Smith scored from second base as the Padres took a 5-4 lead.

Brothers (1-2) allowed a game-winning homer to Brandon Crawford on Sunday in San Francisco’s 5-4 win in 10 innings.

Neb. Officials: 2 Men Tried to Take TVs from Hotel

douglas-county-sheriff(AP) — Authorities in eastern Nebraska say two men tried to steal more than a dozen televisions from a hotel under construction.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says the men were arrested Sunday near a Marriott hotel, after an intrusion alarm was triggered.

Deputies say 19-year-old Tanner Pohlmeier was taken into custody at a nearby car dealership, after he was spotted running from the hotel. Another man, 21-year-old Juan F. Garibay, was stopped in a vehicle about two blocks away. Authorities say he was seen driving away from the scene.

The televisions were recovered.

Pohlmeier faces charges of burglary and obstruction. Garibay faces charges of burglary, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Court records do not list attorneys.

Lancaster Co. Leader Cited for DUI

Brent Smoyer
Brent Smoyer

(AP) — A Lancaster County Board member says he is sorry for driving under the influence.

Brent Smoyer said in a written statement Monday that he takes full responsibility for the incident.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln police say the 32-year-old Smoyer was stopped early Friday morning for making an illegal turn. Police say Smoyer told an officer he had been drinking alcohol earlier. He appeared impaired during a field sobriety test and his blood alcohol content was above the legal limit to drive.

Smoyer was cited for driving while intoxicated and failure to obey a traffic control device. He called the incident embarrassing.

Smoyer, a Republican, is running to represent northeast Lincoln in the Nebraska Legislature.
