Rockies Activate Chatwood from DL

Tyler Chatwood Colorado RockiesSAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Colorado Rockies have activated right-hander Tyler Chatwood from the 15-day disabled list and optioned infielder Charlie Culberson to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Chatwood was activated in time to start Sunday’s series finale against San Francisco.

Chatwood went 8-5 with a 3.15 ERA in 20 starts last season for Colorado. He began this year on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring.

The Rockies might need to make another roster move this week. Lefty Brett Anderson had X-rays on the injured index finger on his throwing hand after the injury appeared more serious than originally feared when he hurt it Saturday.

(AP) — Authorities say a Douglas County jail inmate who underwent surgery Thursday following a fight with another inmate was the target of a second attack after he was taken back the to jail on Friday.

Jail guards used pepper spray Friday to break up the second fight involving 24-year-old Anthony Floyd. Jail deputy director John Hubbard says the second fight may have been gang-related.

On Thursday, Floyd had his testicles partially detached during a fight with inmate Marcus Escamilla in the jail’s library and underwent surgery.

Hubbard says Floyd and inmate James Briggs, involved in Friday’s fight, have been segregated from the general jail population. Inmates Justin Proctor, involved in Friday’s fight, and Escamilla have been placed on disciplinary lockdown.

Faried Helps Nuggets Rally past Jazz 101-94

Denver_NuggetsDENVER (AP) — Kenneth Faried scored 24 points and pulled down 21 rebounds Saturday night in the short-handed Denver Nuggets’ 101-94 come-from-behind win over the Utah Jazz.

Randy Foye added 26 points and Evan Fornier 23 for the Nuggets, who trailed most of the night before sending Utah to its fourth straight loss and evening the season series with their rivals at two games each.

Foye’s 3-pointer with 6:54 left gave Denver its first lead of the night at 77-76.

Seconds later, Fornier made the most unlikely of baskets. He was driving in to the lane when he got tripped and let go of the ball as he fell backward into the paint. The ball fluttered through the net just as he hit the floor, and his subsequent free throw put Denver on top 80-76.

Gordon Hayward led Utah with 23 points and Enes Kanter added 22 points and 14 rebounds.

Neb. Looks to Join States in Fighting Wildfires

fire(AP) — Nebraska is on the cusp of joining forces with Colorado, Wyoming and the Dakotas to help fight rural wildfires.

A bill sent to Gov. Dave Heineman would allow Nebraska to join the Great Plains Interstate Fire Compact, an agreement that lets member states share their firefighters and equipment in an emergency. Kansas is considering a similar proposal.

The bill was introduced two years after massive wildfires swept through central and western Nebraska. Its sponsor, Sen. Al Davis of Hyannis, says pooling the states’ resources could lead to faster response times in the most remote and hard-to-reach areas of Nebraska.

Nebraska State Forester Scott Josiah says the state still has the potential to see large wildfires in years when its grasslands and forests are dry.

Ohio Man Sits at Corner with ‘I AM A BULLY!’ Sign

judgeship(AP) — An Ohio man is sitting on a street corner with a sign declaring he’s a bully as part of his sentence for harassing a neighbor and her disabled children.

A judge ordered 62-year-old Edmond Aviv to display the sign for five hours Sunday. It says: “I AM A BULLY! I pick on children that are disabled, and I am intolerant of those that are different from myself. My actions do not reflect an appreciation for the diverse South Euclid community that I live in.”

Aviv arrived at the corner just before 9 a.m., placing the hand-lettered sign next to him as he sat in a chair. Court records show Aviv pleaded no contest to a disorderly conduct charge.

Anderson Injured in Rockies’ Win over Giants

colorado-rockiesSAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Tommy Kahnle and four relievers combined for two-hit ball over six innings after Brett Anderson was injured, leading the Colorado Rockies to a 1-0 victory over Matt Cain and the San Francisco Giants on Saturday.

Troy Tulowitzki had a sacrifice fly in the third inning for Colorado. Kahnle (2-0) allowed one baserunner in two innings. Matt Belisle, Adam Ottavino, Rex Brothers and LaTroy Hawkins pitched an inning apiece to complete the three-hitter with Hawkins finishing for his second save.

Rockies relievers extended their scoreless streak to 9 2-3 innings in this series.

Anderson left the game with a bruised left index finger after allowing a hit in three innings.

Colorado won for just the second time in six road games this season. It’s also just the Rockies’ third win in their last 17 games at San Francisco’s waterfront ballpark.

Cross Runs for 100 Yards in Nebraska’s Spring Game

nebraska_helmetLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Imani Cross ran for 100 yards and two touchdowns against the No. 1 defense to highlight the Nebraska spring game Saturday.

Instead of splitting the players into Red and White teams, the scrimmage pitted the offense against the defense. The offense won 55-46 in a scoring system that awarded points to the defense for certain accomplishments.

Top running back Ameer Abdullah was held out to guard against possible injury. Cross racked up all his yards in the first half.

The day was about more than the traditional spring scrimmage. Coach Bo Pelini came out of the tunnel cradling a cat — yes, a cat — and raised it to the crowd in a nod to the avatar on the popular @FauxPelini Twitter account. He challenged receiver Kenny Bell to a throwing contest, and Jeremiah Sirles proposed to his girlfriend during a punt, pass and kick competition among former players.

Mauer Homers, Nolasco Pitches Twins past Royals

kc-royalsMINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Joe Mauer hit his first home run of the season and free-agent acquisition Ricky Nolasco earned his first win for the Minnesota Twins in a 7-1 victory Saturday over the Kansas City Royals.

A day after getting his first RBI of the year, Mauer drove in three more runs against Kansas City starter James Shields. Brian Dozier had a leadoff homer for Minnesota, which has scored the second-most runs in the American League.

Nolasco (1-1) showed why the Twins signed him to a $49 million, four-year contract to steady their rotation. The right-hander gave up five runs in each of his first two outings for his new team, but was on top of his game Saturday in his first home start for Minnesota. Nolasco went eight innings and allowed five hits with four strikeouts.

Shields (0-2) yielded seven runs — one earned — in 5 2-3 innings. He gave up six hits and walked three while striking out five.
