UConn Routs Notre Dame 79-58, Wins 9th Title

UCONN WomenNASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Breanna Stewart scored 21 points and Stefanie Dolson added 17 points and 16 rebounds to help UConn beat Notre Dame 79-58 on Tuesday night, giving coach Geno Auriemma and the Huskies a record ninth national championship.

Auriemma passed Pat Summitt for the most titles all-time and capped off the school’s fifth undefeated season in unprecedented fashion. The game was the first title matchup between two unbeatens in the history of college basketball.

The victory also makes the University of Connecticut the center of the college basketball world with both the men’s and women’s teams winning the championship this year. The men beat Kentucky on Monday night. The pair of victories come a decade after the Huskies became the only school to accomplish the feat.

The loss was Notre Dame’s third in the title game in the past four years.

The Irish (37-1) were looking for their first championship since 2001.

Batkid Back in San Francisco, Throws First Pitch

Bat KidSAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Batkid stole hearts in San Francisco once more, with thousands cheering the young boy at the ballpark for the Giants home opener.

Miles Scott, who has undergone treatment for leukemia and saved the city as his favorite superhero through Make-A-Wish Foundation in November, threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Diamondbacks-Giants game Tuesday.

He helped steer the Batmobile into the stadium and raised his right hand into the air out the window, walked hand in hand to the mound with pitcher Matt Cain and even received a fist bump from left fielder Michael Morse from across the dugout rail.

His form wasn’t bad, either. The boy kicked his right leg back and fired an on-target fastball to Cain as thousands in the sellout crowd of 42,166 roared.

‘Ban the Box’ Bill Changed in Neb. Prison Measure

prison(AP) — A bill designed to help ex-convicts find jobs in Nebraska is headed to a final vote in the Legislature.

The measure, part of the state’s prison reform bill, was amended Tuesday before receiving second-round approval by lawmakers. The legislation would prevent public employers from asking about a job hopeful’s criminal history when they first apply.

The amendment would allow schools to ask about any criminal infractions related to sexual or physical abuse. The amendment came in response to lawmaker concerns about student safety. Supporters say nothing stops the schools from doing the background checks.

The measure was included in prison reforms that aim to reduce the inmate population by providing more services to those behind bars and diverting nonviolent offenders from the Department of Corrections.

Tempers Flare in Nebraska Session’s Final Days

Sen. Greg Adams

(AP) — Tempers are flaring and patience is running thin in the Nebraska Legislature as senators try to shoehorn their proposals into bills that are up for a vote.

Speaker Greg Adams implored lawmakers on Tuesday to stay respectful of one another to maintain the Legislature’s credibility in the session’s final days.

His comments followed a heated late-night session on Monday, in which lawmakers tried to attach a series of popular insurance-expansion proposals onto a bill that would end the state’s public disclosure of insurance-executive salaries.

Critics argued that the amendments were “sweeteners” to help the controversial measure pass, and the whole package stalled.

Lawmakers on Tuesday attempted to latch their proposals onto other bills, including amendments that would outlaw mountain lion hunting and expand Medicaid in Nebraska.

The Royals said Tuesday that the second baseman did not sustain a concussion. The team said he will be evaluated over the following two days and he was not likely to miss a significant amount of playing time.

NP Man Runs from Police, Crashes Into Porch

A North Platte man is in jail after he ran from North Platte Police and crashed into the porch of a residence.

According to Officer Rodney Brown, an officer was on patrol in the 700 block of East Philip, when they observed two eastbound vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed.

The second vehicle, a 2011 Honda Civic driven by 26-year-old Bryon Little II, was observed passing the lead vehicle at approximately 68 mph.

Brown said the officer turned to make a traffic stop, but Little made no attempt to stop or slow down.  He said Little continued to travel eastbound until he turned onto Bryan Avenue.

Little then lost control control of the vehicle, and crashed into the back porch of a residence in the 800 block of South Bryan.

Little had already fled the scene, but an officer soon spotted him in the 700 block of South Belmont.  A chase ensued, and Little fled into a garage.

Officers were eventually able to subdued him and place him under arrest.

Little was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center on charges of 2nd offense DUI, willful reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and possession of drug paraphernalia.

There were no reports of injuries.

NFL, Players Meet about Workplace Atmosphere

nfl_logo2011-medNEW YORK (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and union leader DeMaurice Smith met Tuesday to discuss the league’s workplace environment.

In light of the bullying scandal last season involving the Dolphins’ Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito, both sides want to improve the working atmosphere. Goodell last month targeted this meeting as a chance to create open lines of discussion about the issue.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello says the meeting brought “productive discussions.” NFL Players Association spokesman George Atallah called it “positive.”

Also involved Tuesday were new NFLPA President Eric Winston and new NFL director of football operations Troy Vincent.

Biden to Attend Anniversary of Boston Bombing

Boston Strong Run OnWASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden will attend a memorial service next week in Boston marking the anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing.

Biden and his wife, Jill, plan to attend the Tuesday ceremony. The vice president’s office says they’ll pay tribute to victims of the bombing, as well as the survivors and first responders.

April 15 marks the one-year mark since two bombs exploded near the finish line of the marathon, killing three and wounding hundreds. The explosions plunged Boston and its suburbs into a week of chaos amid a manhunt for two brothers accused of planning the attack.

President Barack Obama traveled to Boston shortly after the bombing in 2013 to offer condolences to victims and others.

Man Cleared of NYC Murder After 25 Years in Prison

prison-fence(AP) — A man who served almost a quarter-century behind bars has been cleared of a New York City killing that happened when he was about 1,000 miles away on a Disney World vacation.

Jonathan Fleming was in tears as he hugged his lawyers and family Tuesday. Relatives said “Thank you, God!” after he was freed.

Defense attorneys and prosecutors sought the dismissal of Fleming’s conviction in the 1989 shooting of Darryl Rush.

An eyewitness recanted her testimony soon after Fleming’s 1990 conviction, but he lost appeals. The defense asked prosecutors to review the case last year.

Lawyers Anthony Mayol (MAY’-ohl) and Taylor Koss say the defense found new witnesses. They say the review produced a hotel receipt putting Fleming in Florida hours before the shooting.

3 Men Sentenced for Western Neb. Thefts

(AP) — Three men have been given probation and fined for a string of thefts from vehicles in the Nebraska Panhandle last year.

On Friday they were given two years of probation, suspended jail sentences of 90 days, 200 hours of community service and were fined $500 on each of the 10 counts. They also were ordered to pay a total of more than $7,100 in restitution.

The men were convicted of stealing items from unlocked vehicles between the end of November and early December.

Clark and Bibb are former players for the men’s basketball team at Western Nebraska Community College.
