Connecticut Wins NCAA Title, 60-54 over Kentucky

UCONN Huskies 2014 National ChampionsARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Shabazz Napier scored 22 points and Connecticut won its second NCAA title in four years, beating all those Kentucky freshmen 60-54 in the championship game Monday night.

Napier is among three UConn seniors who were part of the Huskies’ 2011 title. That trio stayed after coach Jim Calhoun’s retirement even when the Huskies were ineligible for the NCAA tournament last season.

They came back strong in coach Kevin Ollie’s second season, and the Huskies (32-8) went all the way to their fourth overall title.

Kentucky (29-11), with five freshmen starters, never led in the championship game.

The Wildcats missed 11 of 24 free throws, while the Huskies were perfect on 10 tries.

Police: Omaha Girl Out of Hospital After Dog Bite

dog-attack(AP) — Authorities say a 9-year-old Omaha girl who was injured after a dog bit her in the face is out of the hospital.

Omaha police say the girl was hurt in her apartment Saturday after a family friend brought over a 1-year-old English bulldog.

Officials say the dog bit the girl in the face when she bent down to pet it. The girl will need reconstructive surgery around her mouth and lips. Additional information was not released.

The Nebraska Humane Society says the dog remains in quarantine.

Mom Gets 23 Year Sentence in Daughter’s Slaying

jail(AP) — A Detroit woman has been sentenced to at least 23 years in prison for fatally stabbing her 8-year-old daughter just weeks after a court referee refused to have the girl removed from her care.

Wayne County Judge Margaret Van Houten issued the sentence in accordance with an agreement between prosecutors and Semeria Greene. Greene appeared in court Monday.

She pleaded guilty in March to second-degree murder. Her maximum prison term is 50 years.

The Michigan Department of Human Services tried to remove Tameria Greene and her siblings from the home in November 2012. But court Referee Richard Smart declined, suggesting instead that their mother should move out or place the children elsewhere.

The state didn’t appeal. Tameria was killed five weeks later.

Portrait of Bullied Girl Emerges from Case File

Rebecca Sedwick

(AP) — The investigative file of a Florida girl who authorities say committed suicide in 2013 because of bullying reveals a more complete portrait of her and her life.

Twelve-year-old Rebecca Sedwick had a spotty relationship with her father, was concerned by her mother and stepfather’s fighting and had just broken up with an online boyfriend before she jumped to her death at an abandoned cement plant.

Days after Rebecca’s death, authorities charged two young girls with stalking because they bullied her in-person nine months before her suicide. The charges were later dropped for one of the girls and the other entered into a diversion program.

However, the file contains scant evidence of cyberbullying, even though officials publicly described cruel text and social media messages as reasons for Rebecca’s suicide.

Authorities: Speed a Factor in Fatal Chase Co. Crash

chase-county-sheriff(AP) — Authorities say speed was a factor in a fatal crash in southwest Nebraska.

Chase County Sheriff Kevin Mueller says 18-year-old Christopher Kirby, of Benkelman, was killed Friday in a single-vehicle rollover crash on a highway near Enders.

Kirby was driving the vehicle when it went off the right shoulder. Mueller says Kirby overcorrected and lost control of the car. It rolled several times.

Kirby was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Lincoln man who led Troopers on a high-speed chase in Lincoln County and forced the lockdown of Sutherland Schools has been sentenced to jail.

Dustin Lankster, 31, appeared in Lincoln County District Court on Monday.

According to prosecutors, a Nebraska State Patrol Trooper initiated a traffic stop on a 2002 Saturn, driven by Lankster, on the afternoon of November 14th.

As the Trooper approached the vehicle, Lankster took off and led the Trooper on a pursuit into the Village of Sutherland.

Prosecutors say Lankster drove through a fence and abandoned the vehicle.

A Code Red emergency alert was issued for Sutherland, and the school was placed on lockdown.

Lankster was eventually located behind a residence and arrested.

Troopers found a female, April Crowley, and a five-year-old child still in the vehicle.

Judge Donald Rowlands sentenced Lankster to 360 days in jail on charges of flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, 1st offense driving under the influence and misdemeanor child abuse.

Lankster had pleaded guilty to the charges after making a plea deal with prosecutors.

He was given credit for 145 days already served in jail.

Rockies Activate LHP Logan from 15-Day DL

Boone Logan Colorado RockiesDENVER (AP) — The Colorado Rockies have activated left-hander Boone Logan from the 15-day disabled list and optioned outfielder Corey Dickerson to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Logan is available to pitch when the Rockies face the Chicago White Sox on Monday night.

Logan was placed on the disabled list March 21 with inflammation in his left elbow. He allowed one run and three hits in two-thirds of an inning in his only appearance in spring training.

Logan signed a three-year contract with Colorado last winter after four years with the Yankees.

Dickerson made Colorado’s opening-day roster this year after hitting .344 in spring training. He is hitting .200 in five plate appearances in 2014.

The Rockies have a full 40-man roster.

NCAA Finalists Illustrate Many Ways to Make a Run

2014 North Texas Final Four LogoARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Kentucky reached the brink of an NCAA title with five freshman starters, including the cool right hand of Aaron Harrison and his decisive 3-pointers in three straight games.

Connecticut got to Monday night’s championship game behind a pair of starters with Final Four experience, and a strong dose of defense.

Wisconsin and Florida rode rosters heavy on upperclassmen to the final weekend, and the Badgers were in position to beat the young Wildcats thanks to their 3-point shooting after 7-foot stalwart Frank Kaminsky was shut down.

Bottom line: There are plenty of ways to make a run in the NCAA tournament. And there will be another batch of potential “one and dones” in the nation’s elite programs no matter how many in the current crop jump to the NBA.

Bueno, who allowed a double and a single while getting two outs Sunday, has a sprained little finger on his left hand.
