Elser Scores Four In Des Moines Victory

tcstormDES MOINES, Ia. – Danial Elser scored four goals, leading the Des Moines Buccaneers (20-32-7) to a 5-2 victory over the Tri-City Storm (21-35-3) on Friday night at Buccaneer Arena.

Dan Labosky and Cody Milan each scored for Tri-City, while affiliate Josh Gabriel notched his first career USHL point.

Elser came out of the gate hot, scoring twice in the first eight minutes of the game to give the Buccaneers an early 2-0 lead. Both goals came on tip-in plays in front of the net and were assisted by Alec Rauhauser and Ryan Galt.

Tri-City cut into the lead later in the opening period on Labosky’s 10th goal of the season. Gabriel started the play, moving the puck to forward Austin Poganski, who found Labosky open for a wrister. The shot beat Des Moines goaltender Ryan Ruck up high and made it a 2-1 game.

But less than a minute later, Des Moines re-established a two-goal lead on a tally from forward Patrick Grasso. Set up by defenseman David Drake, Grasso bested Storm netminder Hayden Lavigne to make it 3-1.

The Storm cut the Bucs’ lead once again in the second on Milan’s fourth goal of the season. Assisted by forwards Garrett Gamez and Jake Wahlin, Tri-City was down 3-2 as the teams headed to the third period.

Elser took over once again in the final frame, scoring his third of the night at 11:53 and his fourth with an empty net at 18:50.

Ruck made 29 saves to earn the win for Des Moines, while Lavigne turned aside 41 shots for Tri-City in the loss.

The Storm will end their 2013-14 season with Saturday night’s finale against Lincoln at the Viaero Event Center. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m.

Tri-City will celebrate Fan Appreciation Night and honor the ten-year anniversary of their 2003-04 Anderson Cup championship team.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Nolan Aibel, Drew Mayer, Chase Berger, and Kyle Eastman, along with defensemen Cutler Martin, Sean Lang, Fredric Larsson and goaltender Jacob Johansson…

AP Source: Broncos, Fox Agree on 3-Year Deal

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — A person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press that coach John Fox has agreed to a new three-year contract with the Denver Broncos.

The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal hasn’t been announced, said the team ripped up Fox’s 2014 contract and replaced it with a deal that runs through 2016.

GM John Elway said in early February that Fox would get a new deal this offseason.

Fox has gone 37-17 with three AFC West titles in his three seasons in Denver.

He overcame a heart operation in November to lead the Broncos to an appearance in the Super Bowl, where they lost 43-8 to Seattle.

Gordon’s 3 RBIs Help Royals Beat White Sox 7-5

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Alex Gordon drove in three runs and Jeremy Guthrie pitched effectively into the sixth inning as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 7-5 in their home opener Friday.

Gordon hit a bases-clearing double in the first inning and Guthrie allowed four runs on seven hits, four walks and a hit batter in 5 2-3 innings.

Lorenzo Cain drove in two runs with a two-out fifth inning single that put Kansas City ahead 7-2.

The Royals jumped on White Sox rookie right-hander Erik Johnson for six hits and four runs in the first two innings. Johnson retired only 14 of the 28 batters he faced, yielding seven runs on 10 hits, three walks and a hit batter to take the loss.

Jose Abreu and Conor Gillaspie hit sacrifice flies against Guthrie, and Adam Eaton hit a two-run single off reliever Kelvin Herrera in the sixth, but both runs were charged to Guthrie.

Tyler Flowers, who went 4-for-4 Thursday against Minnesota, had hits in his first three at-bats, but the streak ended in the eighth when Aoki dropped his fly ball to right.

The Royals, who had not made a challenge in spring training or in the first two games against the Tigers, asked the umpires to review a call in the seventh when Abreu was called safe at first on a throwing error by third baseman Mike Moustakas that pulled Eric Hosmer’s foot off the bag. After a two minute, 49 second delay, the call was upheld.

Greg Holland pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save after setting a Royals’ record with 47 saves last season.

Notes: RHP Nate Jones was put on the disabled list by the White Sox with a muscle strain in his left hip. RHP Jake Petricka was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte. Jones had allowed four runs without retiring a batter in his first two appearances. Petricka pitched 2 1-3 scoreless innings after Johnson was pulled in the fifth. . LHP Bruce Chen, who is 7-2 against the White Sox since the start of the 2011 season, starts Saturday. LHP John Danks will make his first White Sox start.

Blackmon Leads Rox Past D-Backs in Home Opener

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Charlie Blackmon tied a team record with six hits and drove in five runs, helping the Colorado Rockies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 12-2 in their home opener Friday.

Blackmon finished 6 for 6 with three doubles and a two-run homer. The only other Rockies player with six hits in a game was Andres Galarraga against Houston on July 3, 1995.

Carlos Gonzalez added a two-run triple and a two-run homer off the facing of the third deck as the Rockies improved to 13-9 in home openers.

That was more than enough for Juan Nicasio (1-0), who surrendered one run and four hits in seven efficient innings. His only mistake was a slider that Mark Trumbo hit for a solo homer in the fifth.

The Diamondbacks fell to 1-6, their worst start since 1998.

Randall Delgado (0-1) gave up six runs and 10 hits in four innings.

Union Says Other College Teams in Play

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsAn organizer with the United Steelworkers says players from other universities have expressed interest in forming unions in the wake of the landmark decision last week involving the Northwestern football team.

Tim Waters of the steelworkers would not disclose the players or their universities. But he says they reached out following the decision last week by a regional director of the National Labor Relations Board declaring Northwestern’s players are university employees who have the right to form a union.

A member of Wisconsin’s Final Four basketball team says participated in weekly conference calls in recent months with the union and Ramogi Huma, head of the National College Players Association. The NCPA and the steelworkers’ union are working together on the union push.

Saints Agree to Terms with Champ Bailey

Champ-Bailey-Denver-BroncosMETAIRIE, La. (AP) — Veteran defensive back Champ Bailey has agreed to a two-year contract with the New Orleans Saints.

The 35-year-old Bailey played the last 10 seasons with Denver after spending his first five in the NFL with Washington. A shutdown cornerback for much of his career, Bailey has made three All-Pro teams and been selected to 12 Pro Bowls. He trails only Hall of Fame end Reggie White (13) among defensive players in NFL history in Pro Bowls.

Bailey’s 52 interceptions are the most among active players, as are his 204 passes defensed.

But he missed 11 games because of a left foot sprain originally suffered in the 2013 preseason, which wound up being a Lisfranc injury, one of the most painful for an athlete.

He returned late in the season to help the Broncos advance to the Super Bowl.
