Iowa Trucker Sentenced for Assaulting Teen

tony-stodgill(AP) — A 46-year-old Iowa trucker has been sentenced to 17 years in federal prison taking a teenage girl across state lines — including Nebraska — to sexually abuse her.

Tony Lee Stogdill, of Imogene, was sentenced last week in U.S. District Court in Council Bluffs.

Stogdill pleaded guilty to the charges in November. According to a plea agreement, Stogdill took the 15-year-old girl with him on a trucking trip in 2009 from Iowa to Nebraska, Missouri and Illinois, then back to Iowa, and sexually assaulted her repeatedly during the trip.

Stogdill’s wife, Jennifer, was sentenced to probation for her role trying to cover up her husband’s sexual abuse of the girl.

Hulton Inks Contract Extension

Jim HultonKEARNEY, Neb. – Hours before the final weekend of the regular season, Tri-City Storm head coach and general manager Jim Hulton has agreed in principle to an extension which will keep him at the helm through next season. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Hulton, 45, took over on Nov. 19, 15 games into the regular season. In January, the general manager made the decision to make trades to position the franchise better for the future.

“I’m very happy to have the opportunity to come back and hopefully finish the job,” Hulton said. “We started a big task at the trade deadline and put a lot of stock in our team moving forward. To have the opportunity to come back and see that to fruition is something that I’m very excited about.”

Tri-City was 4-9-2 (.333) when Hulton came in, replacing Josh Hauge. The Storm have gone 17-25-1 (.407) under his guidance, for an overall record of 21-34-3 (.388). Currently tied with Des Moines for sixth in the Western Conference, Tri-City has been eliminated from playoff contention.

“I think all the pieces are in place for this organization to have success,” Hulton said. “I think we have a terrific ownership group that supports us in every way possible, we have a great office staff here with the Storm and there’s continuity in the coaching staff.”

The bench boss also said that his assistant coach JB Bittner, who was hired in June, will be returning by his side.

“I’m very comfortable with JB,” Hulton said. “He’s more than an assistant coach to me, he’s a coaching and management partner and we think we’ve solidified our scouting staff. Now we have to put the on-ice product there and that’s the enjoyable part from a coach’s standpoint. We think we’ve aligned ourselves in a spot where we can do these things and hopefully have a lot more success on the ice.”

Hulton was brought in to replace Josh Hauge, and has coaching experience at many levels, both amateur and professional. Before coming to Kearney, he was with the Florida Panthers as an Assistant Coach in the National Hockey League from 2008-2011.

A Kingston, Ont. native, Hulton also served as a head coach in the OHL for 10 seasons with the Mississauga IceDogs, Belleville Bulls, Kingston Frontenacs and Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors.

The news comes on the five-year anniversary of the announcement that Mr. Kirk Brooks acquired the franchise back in 2009. In each year since Brooks came on board, including the current season, attendance at the Viaero Event Center has increased.

Tri-City will head to Des Moines and drop the puck on their final weekend of the regular season at 7:05 p.m. on Friday night.

The Storm will then return home to close the season in Kearney at the Viaero Event Center against the Lincoln Stars. The final home game of the 2013-14 season will get underway on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.

5-Finger Discount Leads to Felony Charge for NP Man

Matthew Rauterkus
Matthew Rauterkus

A North Platte man is facing a felony theft charge after he allegedly stole merchandise and switched price tags at a local business.

At around 3 p.m., on Wednesday, officers with the North Platte Police Department responded to the report of a shoplifter at Menards, 4571 South Parkway Drive.

Store staff alleged that the suspect, 27-year-old Matthew Rauterkus, changed a price tag on a large, boxed vehicle canopy to reduce the price from over $400 to around $80.

Officer Rodney Brown said Rauterkus paid for the item, then drove around behind the store to load additional items he had purchased from the Lawn and Garden center at the store.

Brown said Rauterkus then loaded and concealed several other items that he had not purchased.  The items included a surveillance security system and headphones valued at over $500.  Rauterkus allegedly staged these items earlier so he could steal them.

An employee told officers that they had observed a female in the front seat of the van covering the stolen merchandise with a coat as she and Rauterkus drove away.

The van was eventually located at a residence in the 1400 block of William Avenue.

It was there, Brown said, that officers discovered Rauterkus, and, following further investigation, determined there was probable cause to arrest him for felony theft by shoplifting.

A search warrant was obtained for the residence, and resulted in the discovery of the stolen merchandise.

Rauterkus was transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center.

Brown said officers are still investigating to determine what role the female played in the crime.

Three New Multispecies Big Game Lottery Permits Available in 2014

Super-Lottery-Tag-Elk-Deer-LINCOLN – Three new multispecies big game hunting permits are authorized for 2014, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Each of the three permit recipients will be drawn in a lottery.

Those new permits are:

— One Super Tag permit for residents or nonresidents. This permit is valid for one elk of either sex, one antelope of either sex, one deer of either sex, and two turkeys.
— One Combo permit for residents only. This permit is valid for one antelope of either sex, one deer of either sex, and two turkeys.
— One Combo permit for nonresidents only. This permit is valid for one antelope of either sex, one deer of either sex, and two turkeys.

Each of the new multispecies permits allows qualifying persons to apply multiple times a year at $10 per application. Each is valid for 2014 and 2015 in open hunting seasons with the appropriate weapons. The turkey bag limit allows only toms and bearded hens to be taken in the spring.

A regulation that states no person may have more than one bull elk permit in a lifetime does not apply to lottery and auction permits.

In addition to the new permits listed above, Game and Parks currently has a Super Tag permit (elk, antelope, deer and turkey) for residents only that allows one $25 entry per person each year.

The application period for these multispecies permits is April 21 – July 4, 2014.

Hunters Should Use Caution to Prevent Grass Fires

Nebraska_game_and_parksLINCOLN – With turkey season in progress, hunters in the field should be aware of continued drought conditions that have resulted in many grass fires across the state.

Care should be taken to avoid situations that could result in sparks or flames, which could lead to a wildfire. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has the following tips:

— Cigarettes, matches or any smoking material should never be thrown from vehicles onto road shoulders or into grassland. Make sure these materials are extinguished.
— Never leave campfires unattended. When extinguishing, douse with water and stir to make sure the campfires are completely out.
— If the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for your area, refrain from building campfires or creating any open flames.
— Be careful with lanterns, stoves and heaters. Do not tip over or drop on combustible materials. Let them cool down before refueling. Don’t spill fuel when refueling.

— Don’t drive vehicles off roads and trails into grassland when conditions are dry. Catalytic converters could ignite combustible materials.
— Always observe burn bans.

Bill to Change Neb. Redistricting Process Advances

(AP) — Lawmakers have advanced a bill that would overhaul Nebraska’s process for drawing legislative and congressional districts.

Senators gave first-round approval Wednesday to a measure that would create an independent, bipartisan redistricting commission to propose new boundaries after each U.S. census. Lawmakers would select two members from each of Nebraska’s congressional districts.

The measure would give lawmakers up to three up-or-down votes on new districts, after which the Nebraska Supreme Court would decide.

Sen. Russ Karpisek says the current process leads to districts where incumbents have no incentive to compromise. Some rural senators say the system increases urban Nebraska’s political clout.

Opponents say they have technical concerns about the bill, and argue that redistricting powers should remain with lawmakers.

The bill moved on a 25-12 vote.

Nikko Jenkins Argues Against Prosecutor

(AP) — A man accused of killing four people in Omaha last summer has argued that a county attorney unlawfully released information about the case to a local newspaper.

Nikko Jenkins questioned Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine during a hearing Wednesday. A judge later ruled there was no patient or client misconduct, and there was no evidence against Kleine. A motion to remove him from the case was overruled.

The 27-year-old Jenkins is charged with four counts of first-degree murder in the August shooting deaths of four people. He has pleaded not guilty, and claims he didn’t receive proper mental health treatment while previously in prison.

Jenkins is acting as his own attorney in the case, which has been scheduled to go to trial in July.

Neb. Legislature Awarded for Closed Captioning

nebraska associatioin of the deaf(AP) — Advocates for the deaf and hard of hearing are recognizing the Nebraska Legislature for its efforts to provide closed captioning of floor debate.

The Nebraska Association for the Deaf presented the Nebraska Award for Advocacy to the Legislature on Wednesday. The Legislature has offered the service since January on Nebraska Educational Telecommunications.

Jonathan Scherling, president of the association, says the service allows him and others to receive the most-up-to-date information about what’s happening in the Legislature.

Sen. Bob Krist of Omaha, who accepted the award on behalf of lawmakers, says it’s important to ensure that the Legislature communicates effectively with its citizens.
