Bicyclists Raise Money for Vandalized Cemetery

cemetery-flowersAURORA, Neb. (AP) — A group of bicyclists is riding more than 100 miles as part of a fundraiser for a central Nebraska cemetery that was vandalized last year.

Eight are participating in the Gatekeeper Ride to help buy a new fence for the Farmer’s Valley Cemetery.

Nearly 50 gravestones were pushed over in August, and some were damaged beyond repair. The cemetery was established in 1876 along the banks of the Big Blue River near Henderson, in rural Hamilton County.

The bicyclists started in Fort Hartsuff State Historical Park near Burwell Sunday morning. They were expected to arrive at the cemetery on Monday for the annual Memorial Day Celebration.
