YORK, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a former staffer at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women walked into the state prison with a rifle and demanded to be let inside before shooting herself in the chin.

A Department of Correctional Services spokeswoman says 50-year-old Robin K. Staehr of York walked into the prison’s public lobby at around 5:15 p.m. Sunday. Authorities say prison staff members recognized Staehr as a former employee who resigned in 2005, and observed a rifle behind her back.

Staff members refused to allow her inside and called 911. Staehr then shot herself in the chin before dropping the .22-caliber rifle and walking out. She was stopped outside the entrance, and taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

No staff or inmates were injured. Authorities are still investigating.
