BELMONT, N.Y. (AP) — California Chrome is revving up his bid to become the 12th Triple Crown champion after a fast run at Belmont Park.
He ran the 5 furlongs in 59 4/5 seconds Saturday over a fast main track at Belmont Park.
Alan Sherman, the son of 77-year-old trainer Art Sherman and his top assistant, says “he’s ready.”
The California-bred horse captured the attention of racing and non-racing fans alike in winning the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.
California Chrome will attempt to end the longest drought in Triple Crown history next Saturday in the arduous 1 1-2 mile Belmont Stakes. The last Triple Crown winner was Affirmed in 1978.
The horse appeared to relish the crisp morning, covering the ground easily for Victor Espinoza.
