Crews Search for 3 People in Colorado Mudslide

police-lights-redGRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) — Rescue teams are resuming the search for three men reported missing after a large mudslide in western Colorado.

The slide hit Sunday in a remote area near the town of Collbran, about 40 miles east of Grand Junction.

Mesa County Sheriff’s dispatcher Amanda Orr says three area residents are unaccounted for, and it’s unknown if they were in the area impacted by the massive slide.

A sheriff’s helicopter was surveying the slide area early Monday. The department said late Sunday it estimated the slide to be about 4 miles long, 2 miles wide and 250 feet deep in many places.

Authorities say no structures or major roads were affected.

UNL Scientists Win Grants for Rootworm Research

rootwormLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — University of Nebraska-Lincoln scientists have received more than $1.1 million in grants to research one of corn’s most pernicious pests.

Three teams of entomologists were awarded the three-year grants from Monsanto. The grants will help pay for research and corn grower education on western corn rootworm management.

Researchers received the grants amid signs that the corn rootworms are becoming resistant to some of the traits in genetically modified corn.

Corn rootworms can destroy corn roots and reduce yields. The loss of roots also causes plants to fall over in strong winds or rain.

This is the second year UNL scientists have received funding from Monsanto’s western corn rootworm program.

Tornado-Stricken Beaver Crossing Family of 11 Gets New Home

Beaver Crossing Tornado Cleanup(AP) — An eastern Nebraska family of 11 has found a new home after a tornado destroyed their old one two weeks ago.

Mitch and Betty Nisly’s bank approved the family for a home loan last week. Their new home is in Utica, about 12 miles north of Beaver Crossing, which was struck by a tornado on May 11.

The storm also crushed the family’s 12-passenger van. Authorities say 17 tornadoes were reported in Nebraska that day. Beaver Crossing was hardest-hit, with 16 houses damaged.

Since the tornado, the family had been living in a three-bedroom house owned by the Utica United Methodist Church, and sleeping on air mattresses. The family also received donations of clothes, blankets, furniture and gift certificates.

lake-minatareSCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have recovered the bodies of two Scottsbluff men who drowned at Lake Minatare in western Nebraska.

The men were identified as 19-year-old Dylan Peters and 23-year-old Chris Romey. Authorities say the two died when they attempted to swim between two islands on the north side of the lake. Their bodies were recovered Sunday night.

Scotts Bluff County Attorney Doug Warner says the men’s bodies were found in a shallow area, about 6 feet deep. He says drugs and alcohol weren’t factors in the drowning.

The Nebraska State Patrol and Scotts Bluff County sheriff’s office are investigating the incident.

Douglas County’s Insurer Sued for Damages

lawsuit-settlement(AP) — Two men wrongfully accused in a 2006 double murder are going after Douglas County’s liability insurance carrier to recoup a multimillion-dollar judgment against the county’s former crime lab chief.

Attorneys for Matthew Livers and Nicholas Sampson filed garnishment claims last week against the St. Paul Travelers Cos. They are seeking the $6.6 million they were awarded in a federal civil rights case against former Douglas County crime lab chief David Kofoed.

Livers and Sampson were jailed for months after the Murdock, Neb., shotgun murders of Wayne and Sharmon Stock, Livers’ aunt and uncle.

The case involved a false confession from Livers during a coercive interrogation. Livers, who has a learning disability, implicated himself and his cousin Sampson in the killings.

ATLANTA (AP) — Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki says he avoided an injury when he hit his left foot on his backswing late in Colorado’s game against the Braves.

Tulowitzki left the game in the eighth inning. He limped slightly as he walked slowly off the field after a groundout in Sunday’s 7-0 loss to Atlanta. A trainer walked onto the field and accompanied Tulowitzki back to the dugout.

Josh Rutledge replaced Tulowitzki at shortstop.

Tulowitzki’s assurance that he is not hurt was important news for Colorado.

The Rockies lost third baseman Nolan Arenado to a broken left middle finger in Friday’s game. Arenado was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday and Rutledge was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

19,965 at B10 Final Sets Conference-Tourney Mark

Big-Ten-LogoOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The crowd of 19,965 at the Big Ten tournament final between Indiana and Nebraska set an NCAA record for attendance at a conference baseball tournament game.

The tournament was played at TD Ameritrade Park, the home of the College World Series. Nebraska was the host, and its appearance in the championship game Sunday accounted for the big crowd.

Top-seeded Indiana defeated the No. 2-seeded Cornhuskers 8-4 to earn the Big Ten’s automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.

The Big Ten tournament’s five-day attendance was a conference-record 62,020 — 10 times the total for the 2013 event held at Target Field in Minneapolis. The previous NCAA record for single-game attendance at a conference tournament was 17,860 for an Atlantic Coast Conference game between Florida State and North Carolina in 2005.

The Musketeers will find out the opponent and site of their first-round matchup when the NCAA announces the field of 64 teams Monday.

Senior outfielder Mitch Elliott was selected the tournament’s most outstanding player after going 8 for 18 with four RBIs and three runs scored in four games for Xavier.

After losing the tournament opener at MCU Park in Brooklyn to Creighton (32-17-1), fourth-seeded Xavier staved off elimination by beating St. John’s and Seton Hall to reach the championship game.

Gattis Hits 2 HRs; Braves Roll Past Rockies 7-0

colorado-rockiesATLANTA (AP) — Evan Gattis homered twice to support Julio Teheran’s six scoreless innings and the Atlanta Braves beat the Colorado Rockies 7-0 on Sunday.

Justin Upton and Chris Johnson added two-run homers for the NL East-leading Braves, who have won six of eight.

Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki appeared to limp slightly as he walked off the field after his groundout ended the eighth. He left the game and there was no immediate report on his possible injury.

Gattis missed four games with viral symptoms. He returned with no hits and a walk in Saturday’s 3-1 loss to the Rockies before hitting a homer in the second and a two-run shot in the fourth off Franklin Morales (3-4) on Sunday.
