Can US Eliminate Invasive Species by Eating Them?

Asian Carp
Asian Carp

(AP) — It seems simple: American lakes, rivers and offshore waters are filling up with destructive fish and crustaceans originally from other parts of the world, so why not control these populations by getting people to eat them?

The idea gained momentum recently from the lionfish, which invaded the Gulf of Mexico but was successfully marketed to restaurants and today appears to be in decline.

Businesses and scientists have struggled to repeat this apparent triumph with other species. Some, such as Asian carp, are not appetizing to Americans. Others, like feral hogs, reproduce too quickly.

Laura Huffman is the Nature Conservancy’s director in Texas. She says eating invasive species “is not a silver bullet,” but the idea can still “get people engaged in the topic and in the solution.”

Sweets Makers Work to Keep Names Off E-Cigarette Flavors

ecig-flavors(AP) — Some makers of the liquid nicotine used in electronic cigarettes are using notable brand names like Thin Mint, Tootsie Roll and Cinnamon Toast Crunch to sell their wares.

Now the owners of those trademarks are fighting back to make sure their brands aren’t being used to sell an addictive drug or make it appealing to to children.

General Mills, the Girl Scouts and the maker of Tootsie Rolls say they’ve sent cease-and-desist letters to keep the brands geared toward children of all ages off the digital tobacco products.

The move comes amid the debate about flavors available for the popular battery-powered devices that heat a liquid nicotine solution, creating vapor that users inhale.

Some worry candy-like e-cigarette flavors, which already are banned for their old-fashioned cousins, could appeal to children.

University of Nebraska Regents to Increase Budget

university-of-nebraskaLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The University of Nebraska Board of Regents will consider next week a 3.5 percent increase to the university’s operating budget for the upcoming academic year, while keeping tuition from rising for Nebraska residents.

The increase will bring NU’s total operating budget to $2.4 billion. Regents will consider the budget during their regular meeting, which begins at 8 a.m. on Friday in Varner Hall on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln East Campus.

Interim NU President James Linder said freezing tuition reflects the university’s highest priority of keeping college affordable. Nonresidents will see a small increase in tuition costs.

Nicasio Shines as Rockies Beat Braves 3-1

colorado-rockiesATLANTA (AP) — Michael Cuddyer and Troy Tulowitzki each homered, Juan Nicasio solved the Braves and the Colorado Rockies beat Atlanta 3-1 on Saturday.

The Rockies were missing some of their big bats as Carlos Gonzalez missed his third straight start with a swollen finger and Nolan Arenado was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken finger.

Nicasio (5-2) didn’t need much offense. The right-hander turned around his ugly history against the Braves — 0-3 and 9.82 ERA in four starts. He gave up only two hits in six shutout innings. Nicasio pitched around four walks and had five strikeouts.

Atlanta’s Mike Minor (2-3) allowed three runs on four hits — including the two homers — in 6 2-3 innings.

Mother, Boyfriend to Stand Trial in Hastings Boy’s Death

The mother of a slain 4-year-old Hastings boy and her live-in boyfriend will stand trial on charges of child abuse resulting in death.

29-year-old Amanda Pecor and 30-year-old Matthew Edwards waived their rights to preliminary hearings on Thursday and were bound over to await trial in district court.

Police say Amanda Pecor’s other 9-year-old son reportedly shot his 4-year-old brother, Beau Pecor, to death.

Authorities say police and school and mental health officials had concerns about the 9-year-old’s often violent behavior and that officials had warned both Pecor and her Edwards not to have guns in the house.

Lawsuit Says Omaha Inspector Sought Sexual Favors

omaha(AP) — An Omaha property owner is suing the city of Omaha and one of its code inspectors, alleging the inspector offered leniency on her code violations in exchange for sexual favors.

The woman claims in the federal lawsuit that her north Omaha rental properties were targeted for code violations and excessive fines by the inspector when she refused his advances.

The inspector is also named in a separate lawsuit by Omaha property owners who make similar allegations. Omaha attorney Jason Bruno represents the property owners in both lawsuits. He says his clients have been in negotiations with the city to fix the problems outlined in the claims.

Creighton Edges Seton Hall 2-1, goes to Title Game

creightonNEW YORK (AP) — Bryan Sova allowed one run in a five-hitter as Creighton advanced to the Big East tournament title game with a 2-1 victory over Seton Hall on Saturday.

Sova (6-1) struck out five and walked none, throwing 82 of his 110 pitches for strikes to lead top-seeded Creighton (32-16-1) at MCU Park in Brooklyn. The Bluejays got two runs in the third inning on an RBI triple by Mike Gerber and a run-scoring double by Reagan Fowler, and that was all that was needed for Sova — Creighton’s closer for most of the season.

Luke Cahill (10-2) allowed two runs and seven hits in seven innings for Seton Hall (39-14), which was scheduled to play Xavier later Saturday. The winner would advance to face Creighton in the championship Sunday.

Derek Jenkins had an RBI single in the sixth, but that was all Seton Hall could muster against Sova.

Kubat Stifles Wolverines, Huskers to Play for Big Ten Title

husker baseballOmaha – Behind a career-high 8.2 innings from Kyle Kubat and four doubles by the Husker offense, the Nebraska baseball team posted a 6-1 win over the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday morning in front of more than 12,000 fans at TD Ameritrade Park to advance onto the Big Ten Tournament title game for the second straight year. The Huskers will play either Indiana or Michigan State tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Now 40-18 on the season, the Huskers have won 40 games for the first time since 2008 when Nebraska ended the year with a 41-16-1 record following a loss to Oral Roberts in the NCAA Tournament.

Kubat was nearly untouchable on the day, giving up just three hits to the Wolverines and striking out a season-high six. Michigan’s lone run came in the top of the ninth when Kubat hit leadoff hitter Travis Maezes, who moved to second on a wild pitch and then scored following consecutive fly outs to right field that allowed Maezes to move up a base each time.

A product of Creighton Prep High School in Omaha, Kubat retired the Wolverines in order six times on the day and only allowed two runners on the base in the same inning once. Kubat is now 3-0 in three career starts against the Wolverines, including a pair of wins at the Big Ten Tournament. In 27.2 innings against the Wolverines, Kubat has allowed six runs on 19 hits, while striking out 23 with a 1.63 ERA.

Michigan starter Keith Lehmann allowed four hits and two walks over 5.1 innings in his second start of the year, but the Huskers made the most of their opportunities with a pair of runs off the 6-1 freshman. NU’s offense cashed in a one out walk in the fourth and Kelly scored in the sixth after his one-out double knocked Lehmann out of the game.

Nebraska’s 5-6-7 hitters combined to go 6-for-10 on the afternoon with two runs scored and two RBIs. The Huskers increased their tournament double total to 10 with four doubles, including one each from Kelly, Michael Pritchard, Austin Darby and Tanner Lubach.

Holding a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Huskers blew the game open when they sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs on four hits, three walks and a HBP. Kelly got the rally started with a one-out double and scored on a double by Darby. Lubach then squared up an offering from reliever James Bourque, but it went right to Maezes at shortstop for the second out of the inning. Bourque was in position to get the Wolverines out of the jam, but he hit freshman Ben Miller to load the bases and then he issued consecutive full-count walks to Steven Reveles and Ryan Boldt that plated a pair of runs. Jake Placzek then came through with a RBI infield single and Pritchard notched NU’s third bases-loaded walk of the inning to push NU’s lead to 6-0. Reliever Mac Lozer put an end to the bleeding when he got Kelly to strikeout looking.

With a 6-0 lead in his pocket, Kubat retired six straight Wolverines to cruise through the seventh and eighth innings. Kubat got the first two outs of the ninth before Luke Bublitz took the mound and struck out Patrick Kendall looking to send the Huskers to the title game.

Nebraska’s offense broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth when Lubach delivered a two-out single. The Huskers got their first base runner with less than two outs when Kelly worked a one-out walk and moved to second on a walk by Blake Headley, Lehmann’s first walks of the game. After Darby flied out to center, Lubach drove a 2-0 offering from Lehmann up the middle that plated Kelly. Lehmann kept the damage to one run by getting Miller to fly out.

After not getting a runner in scoring position through the first five innings, the Wolverines had their first scoring opportunity in the sixth when Maezes worked a two-out walk and moved to second on an infield single by Jacob Cronenworth. With Michigan’s No. 3 hitter, Jackson Glines, up, Kubat coaxed a fly ball out to Pritchard in left to end the threat and keep the Huskers in front, 1-0.

The Big Ten Network will have live coverage of tomorrow’s game, while Lane Grindle and Greg Sharpe will also have the call across the Husker Sports Network.

Tickets for tomorrow’s game can still be purchased through Ticketmaster online or tomorrow at the TD Ameritrade Box Office.
