NPPD Urges Boaters to Beware of Zebra Mussels

zebra-mussel(AP) — Nebraska’s largest public power utility is urging boaters to clean, drain and dry their boats and equipment in an attempt to stymie the spread of invasive water species.

Nebraska Public Power District and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission are asking water recreationalists to be aware of invasive species like zebra mussels and Asiatic clams. The species can attach themselves to boat motors, bait buckets and other equipment and make their way from one body of water to another.

Once transferred, they can attach themselves to pipes or other structures, damaging boat motors and reducing the ability to draw water into facilities like water treatment and power plants.

Zebra mussels multiply at a rapid rate. An adult female zebra mussel can release up to a million eggs in a year.

Meghin Williams Nebraska Huskers Women's BasketballFormer Husker forward Meghin Williams will begin her pursuit of a coaching career as a graduate assistant manager on the Nebraska women’s basketball staff in 2014-15, Coach Connie Yori announced on Friday.

Williams’ primary responsibilities at Nebraska will include assisting with practice preparation and administrative duties, while coordinating Nebraska’s efforts on Twitter and Facebook. She will also help coordinate Nebraska’s practice players and will play a role with Nebraska Women’s Basketball Camps.

“We’re excited to give Meghin a chance to begin her career as a coach,” Yori said. “Meghin played a major role in developing great team chemistry on some of the best teams in school history here at Nebraska. She has a great personality and had to overcome quite a bit of adversity as a player, which should serve her well in her future as a coach.”

Williams, a four-year contributor on the court for Nebraska from 2009-10 through 2012-13, was a member of NU’s first two NCAA Sweet 16 teams as a freshman in 2010 and a senior in 2013. She also helped the Huskers to the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

Judge Orders NCAA Suit to go to Trial Next Month

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsA federal judge has denied the NCAA’s request to delay the trial on the antitrust suit by former UCLA basketball player Ed O’Bannon and others.

The trial will begin June 9 in Oakland, California, and has the potential to reshape the way major college sports operate.

It will center on claims that the NCAA conspired to restrain competition in Division I sports and in the group licensing of broadcasts and videogames.

Judge Claudia Wilken also set another trial for next March on claims by other athletes that the NCAA and the videogame maker Electronic Arts misappropriated athletes’ names and likenesses for NCAA-branded videogames. That case previously had been combined with the O’Bannon case.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The parents of an infant killed last year by his nanny are suing the nanny and her former employers.

The lawsuit by Christopher and Ashley Bell, of Omaha, says the child care facilities where Sarah Cullen had worked failed to report allegations that she had been abusive to children in her care before.

The lawsuit names as defendants Cullen, Grow With Me child care and its former director Jennifer Schmaderer; La Petite Academy child care and its former director Lisa Hampson; and online family care service Care.com.

Cullen was sentenced earlier this month to 70 years to life in prison for causing the injuries in February 2013 that killed 4-month-old Cash Bell.

The Bells are seeking an unspecified amount in damages.
