Little Nebraska Boy Finally gets to go Home

NORFOLK, Neb. (AP) — A little Nebraska boy and his family are getting used to their new life at home near Norfolk.

At last.

Keagan Sullivan spent the first 30 months of his life tethered to hospital machines.

His mother, Katlinn, has a genetic disorder that required medication to reduce the threat of blood clots. Complications set in when she was pregnant with Keagan. He was delivered early, before his lungs were developed. He weighed just 1 pound, 8 ounces.

While Keagan was at Children’s Hospital in Omaha, Katlinn stayed nearby. She went home during the week for a day or two to see her husband and their daughter, McKenna, and then headed back.

Keagan’s still dependent on machines, but now they’re all home, enjoying being together.

Storm Take Newell Third Overall In Dispersal

Patrick Newell Tri-City StormKEARNEY, Neb. – The Tri-City Storm got their man in the dispersal draft of Indiana Ice players on Friday morning, selecting forward Patrick Newell of Thousand Oaks, Calif.

The Ice franchise has been granted dormancy for the 2014-15 season and temporary withdrawal from on-ice competition as the organization focuses on development of a new facility and permanent home.

The entire roster, including affiliate list, was divided up amongst the current USHL franchises Friday.

Tri-City had the third overall pick and Newell was the player the Storm coaching staff was looking for.

“We are very excited to add a player of Patrick’s pedigree to our group,” said Storm head coach and general manager Jim Hulton. “He addresses a need as a playmaking, high end center who also brings a wealth of playoff experience following his recent Clark Cup Championship performance. We look forward to seeing Patrick in a Storm jersey!”

Newell played in 59 of the Ice’s 60 regular season games during 2013-14, and was fourth on the team in scoring with 13 goals and 30 assists and a plus-24 rating.

The forward, who is committed to play collegiately at St. Cloud State, also contributed to the Ice’s Clark Cup championship run, scoring four goals and three assists in the team’s 12 playoff games. Two of those tallies were game-winners.

In 91 career USHL games, Newell has 20 goals and 45 assists.

With their second round selection, Tri-City chose forward Karl El-Mir of the Selects Academy. El-Mir spent the 2013-14 season on the Ice’s affiliate list.

The forward is committed to the University of Connecticut and hails from Greenfield Park, Que.

In the third and final round, the Storm chose defenseman Austin Kosack. The blueliner is committed to play at Ferris State and plans on attending school next season.

In 57 games with the Ice this season, Kosack had three goals and 26 assists with a plus-40 rating. He is also an import, hailing from Oakville, Ont.

The Storm will once again head to Las Vegas for tryout camp this summer, and will hold evaluations June 16-21 at the Las Vegas Ice Center.

Crimestoppers Tip Leads to Hit-and-Run Arrest

A North Platte man has been arrested for felony hit-and-run and driving under suspension thanks to a Lincoln County Crimestoppers tip.

According to a report from the North Platte Police Department officers responded to the area of 5th and Carr in regards to a vehicle that had struck a pedestrian then left the scene on Sunday, April 20 at 6:44 pm. The officers spoke with several witnesses who indicated that 32-year-old Sarah Doherty of North Platte had stopped her car near the south curb of 5th Street facing eastbound. According to the report Doherty exited her car for a short period of time and when she went to re-enter it a silver SUV traveling westbound allegedly ran the stop sign for east/west traffic on 5th Street and continued westbound toward her. Doherty attempted to move out of the way when the vehicle struck her arm. Officers note she had visible injury to her arm, but did not get transported from the scene by paramedics. The SUV stopped for a brief amount of time, but the driver did not get out or make any attempt to contact anyone at the scene. Witnesses provided a description of the driver and the vehicle.

According to the NPPD report a Lincoln County Crimestoppers tip was received after the initial investigation, giving officers a lead in the case. The tip indicated that Travis Johns, 39, of North Platte was the driver of the vehicle. Further investigation by the officers showed that Johns had a vehicle registered to him that is similar to the one described as the one involved in the accident. Officers contacted Johns on Tuesday, May 22 and developed enough probable cause to show he was the driver involved. Johns was arrested for felony hit-and-run for leaving an accident with injury and driving under suspension.

Beat the Heat, Check the Back Seat, Friday is Heat Awareness Day

heatwave“Beat the Heat, Check the Back Seat,” is the national slogan this year for Heat Awareness Day, Friday, May 23.

According to the National Weather Service website: “Heat is one of the leading weather-related killers in the United States, resulting in hundreds of fatalities each year. In the disastrous heat wave of 1980, more than 1,250 people died. In the heat wave of 1995 more than 700 deaths in the Chicago area were attributed to heat, making this the deadliest weather event in Chicago history. In August 2003, a record heat wave in Europe claimed an estimated 50,000 lives.”

In an email from the NWS it reports that: “Last year, 44 kids died unnecessarily.  This is tragic, but the numbers were down from the past 5 years.  Our goal is for 0 deaths and injuries.”

The San Francisco State University Heat Page gives us an idea of how heat can affect children left in vehicles.

“So far in 2014 there have been at least five heatstroke deaths of children in vehicles; four confirmed as heatstroke and the other one still pending official findings by the medical examiner.  Last year, 2013, there were at least forty-four deaths of children in vehicles; thirty-nine of which has been confirmed as heatstroke and five which, based upon the known circumstances, are most likely heatstroke (2013 list).   Since 1998 there have been at least 606 documented cases of heatstroke deaths of children in vehicles.  This data and study shows that these incidents can occur on days with relatively mild (i.e., ~ 70 degrees F) temperatures and that vehicles can reach life-threatening temperatures very rapidly.”

NP Public Library Closed due to Bed Bugs

bed-bugThe North Platte Public Library will be closed until Tuesday, May 27th due to an isolated infestation of bed bugs.

The library has been closed by order of the Mayor of North Platte, Dwight Livingston. According to a report from the city experts have surveyed the entire facility after suspicions of infestation were brought forward. The report states that the infestation appears to be isolated to a couple of chairs in the library. The chairs have been removed and in order to facilitate the necessary actions to secure the entire facility from any further infestation the library will be closed.

According to the report the library is expected to reopen on Tuesday, resuming regular hours. The closure is so the city can take the appropriate steps over the weekend to address the problem. The reports states that the city is working with experts who have addressed similar situations in other locations and they assure the problem can be taken care of with their proposed plan of action.

The report from the city also states they are sorry for any inconvenience this situation has brought about, but they want to make sure that every precaution is taken to protect library patrons and employees. If there are any changes to the plans you can read it on the North Platte Post.

Students Nabbed for Releasing Crickets in School

odd-newsBRIDGEVILLE, Pa. (AP) — Several students will be disciplined for releasing hundreds of crickets in a western Pennsylvania high school as a senior prank.

Chartiers Valley School District tells KDKA-TV (https://cbsloc.al/1na2OXj ) that the students involved in Thursday’s prank at the high school in Bridgeville have been identified and will be disciplined. The district spokeswoman, Kara Droney, didn’t say what that would entail.

School officials aren’t saying how many Chartiers Valley High School seniors were involved, though the television station says it was about six.

School janitors and teachers were enlisted to help round up the bugs. Some of the prank was caught on school surveillance cameras.

Ex-Fire Chief gets 4-5 Years in Nebraska Prison

firedptLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A former fire chief has been sent to prison for stealing from his fire department in southeast Nebraska.

Forty-seven-year-old John Porter pleaded no contest in March in Lancaster County District Court to theft and attempted possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. On Thursday he was given three to four years for the theft and a year for the weapons charge.

Prosecutors say Porter manipulated accounts and stole more than $33,000 from November 2010 through January 2013. He’s repaid the money to the Southeast Rural Fire Department, from which he was fired last year.

Police say they found more than a dozen shotguns and rifles while searching Porter’s home last year. Because Porter was convicted of theft in 2006, he’s ineligible to own guns.

3 Killed in Northeast Nebraska Collision ID’d

fatal-crashPILGER, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have released the names of three people killed in a fiery collision in northeast Nebraska.

The accident occurred just after 9 a.m. Tuesday in southeastern Stanton County, about seven miles north-northeast of Clarkson.

Sheriff Mike Unger identified the three as 67-year-old David Schmid and his wife, 59-year-old Elaine Schmid, from Norfolk, and 53-year-old Derek Wrase, of Joice, Iowa.

Unger says Elaine Schmid was driving a sport utility vehicle when it hit a tanker truck at the intersection of state Highways 15 and 32. The tanker soon was struck by a semitrailer. Wrase was driving the semitrailer.

The driver of the empty tanker truck, 27-year-old Brandon Wolf, of Fremont, was hospitalized.
