Allison Finkbeiner of Arizona Signs with NPCC Softball

Knights-SoftballNorth Platte- Allison Finkbeiner from Kingman High School in Kingman, Arizona signed her National Letter of Intent to play softball at North Platte Community College. Finkbeiner will play in the outfield for the Knights and is a versatile batter at the plate.

During her senior season at Kingman, Finkbeiner finished with a .300 batting average and a .998% fielding percentage.

“Allison was a standout student-athlete while at Kingman High and academics were very important to her as she was deciding where to continue her education and her softball career,” said head coach Janelle Higgins. “Allison has the drive and determination to be a standout student-athlete in any program. Her attitude and willingness to do whatever it takes on the field or in the classroom will definitely be a great addition to our program.”

“I decided to committ to NPCC becasue it is a small town just like back home,” said Finkbeiner. “I have always wanted to get out of Arizona and the desert and NPCC and coach Higgins gave me that opportunity. I really liked the college campus and all the great academic classes and educational programs that are offered.”

“Allison has a great first step and read of the ball off the bat in the outfield and she is not afraid to leave her feet to dive or get dirty to make a play,” said Higgins. “In the batters box she hits for power but can lay down a bunt depending on the situation. Allison is definitely going to help round out our recruiting class for the outfield and fill gaps from graduation. Her personality and attitude fit with what we are looking for in athletes and I am very excited to get her back to campus in the fall.”

Nebraska Dentist Charged with Stealing Gold

ne-supreme-court-gavelOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Federal prosecutors have charged a Lincoln dentist with stealing nearly $17,000 worth of precious metals from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Omaha.

Prosecutors say Randall Toothaker had been working in the hospital’s dental prosthetics office before the alleged theft last summer.

A lab technician reported seeing the 57-year-old dentist open a locked cabinet where precious metals used in dental procedures, including gold, were kept.

While VA officials investigated the missing metals, prosecutors say Toothaker tried to leave the property. Officers pulled him over and found the missing metals in a bag in his vehicle.

Toothaker told officers he didn’t know how the metals got into his bag.

Toothaker’s initial appearance in federal court is scheduled for July 18. His attorney didn’t immediately respond to a message Wednesday.

Grand Island Chief Explains Gang Member Numbers

Grand-Island-PoliceGRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — The Grand Island police chief says the 375 documented gang members noted in a grant application doesn’t mean that each person is still active in local gangs or even in town.

The city is seeking a $30,000 grant to integrate the city’s law enforcement reporting system with the state system so the city can share its crime data and intelligence.

Chief Steve Lamken said there are 375 names in the city database but their inclusion doesn’t mean “that each one is a hard-core gang member.”

Lamken says the database includes the names of gang members who have been sent to prison.

Filing Alleges Nebraska Prison Overcrowding

prisonLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Six inmates alleging overcrowded conditions have asked a district court to let them sue the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services without paying a filing fee.

Last week’s filing in Lancaster County District Court says the state Diagnostic & Evaluation Center in Lincoln exceeded its design capacity by more than 298 percent as of April 30.

Michael Sather, Dustin Krogman, Wayne Saul Jr., Dylan Aufdengarten, Edward Bean and Jason Spencer are listed on the filing. Sather says overcrowding, unclean conditions, noise and limited bathroom access are causing prisoners mental and physical ailments.

The state’s Correctional Services Department says it doesn’t comment on pending litigation.

In November two other inmates sued the department, alleging over overcrowding at the state prison in Tecumseh.
