NFL Agrees to Remove Cap on Concussion Damages

nfl_logo2011-medPHILADELPHIA (AP) — The NFL has agreed to remove a cap on concussion-related damages after a judge questioned whether a proposed settlement provided enough money to cover retired players.

A revised settlement agreement filed Wednesday also eliminates a provision that barred anyone who gets concussion damages from the NFL from suing the NCAA or other amateur football leagues.

U.S. District Judge Anita Brody had denied preliminary approval of the deal in January that set a $675 million cap on damages, because she worried the money could run out sooner than expected. The settlement is designed to last at least 65 years and cover retirees who develop Lou Gehrig’s disease and other neurological problems.

More than 4,500 former players have filed suit, some accusing the league of fraud for its handling of concussions.

Fireworks Sales Begin Wednesday in Nebraska

fireworksLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — State officials say fireworks sales can begin Wednesday in Nebraska.

The state licensed 703 fireworks stands this year. The state allows them to continue selling fireworks until midnight on July 4th, but some cities may shorten the selling period.

The State Fire Marshall’s office reminds Nebraskans that some fireworks are still prohibited in the state, including wire sparklers and bottle rockets.

Officials say it’s important to take precautions when using fireworks. Make sure to have a bucket of water nearby and never light fireworks near dry grass.

Also, stand several feet away from lit fireworks, and supervise children closely around fireworks.

Cops: Child Care Operation Was Front for Child Porn Ring

police-lights-redSANFORD, N.C. (AP) — Authorities in North Carolina say a registered sex offender ran a home child care as a front for a child porn production operation involving a Special Forces soldier and other adults.

Harnett County investigators say Bailey Joe Mills ran the unlicensed child care from his home. Mills has three felony convictions involving sexual activity with children and was charged in January with raping a 13-year-old girl.

Authorities say there are at least 10 child victims.

Also arrested were Mills’ wife, 34-year-old Elizabeth Holland Mills; 29-year-old Sgt. 1st Class Jordan Everett Busse of Fort Bragg; 20-year-old Rashawn Rodriguez Drake Jackson; and 50-year-old Tommy Wall.

Bailey Joe Mills’ attorney, Mac Hunter, said he expected federal authorities would get involved. The other defendants could not immediately be reached for comment.

Researcher Charged in Major HIV Vaccine Fraud Case

dept.-of-justiceIOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Responding to a major case of research misconduct, federal prosecutors are taking a rare step by filing charges against a scientist after he admitted falsifying data while researching an HIV vaccine.

Authorities say former Iowa State University laboratory manager Dong-Pyou Han has confessed to manipulating data that helped his team get millions in grants and increased hopes of a major breakthrough in AIDS research.

Experts say the misconduct was particularly brazen, and charges are rare in part because less money is usually involved. The National Institutes of Health is reviewing the case’s impact on research it funds.

Han resigned from the university last fall. He was indicted last week and could face prison time if convicted. He’s free on bond but didn’t respond to a message seeking comment Tuesday.

Rockies End 7-Game Slide with 10-5 Win over Cards

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Justin Morneau hit a three-run homer and drove in six runs as the Colorado Rockies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-5 on Tuesday night to snap a seven-game losing streak.

Jorge De La Rosa (7-6) allowed five runs, four earned, in seven innings. He is the first Rockies starter to earn a win since June 12.

Nick Greenwood (1-1) pitched 1 2-3 innings in relief of starter Shelby Miller, who left in the third with back tightness. Greenwood surrendered Morneau’s homer on a hanging slider in the fourth.

Morneau had an RBI single in the first and a two-run single in the seventh that gave Colorado some breathing room.

The Rockies finished with 17 hits one night after managing just three when they were shut out at home for the first time in nearly a year.
