Dissolution Places Nebraska Cemetery in Limbo

cemetery-flowersSHELTON, Neb. (AP) — The dissolution of Buffalo County’s townships has left a central Nebraska cemetery with an uncertain future.

The Shelton Cemetery was named after a Buffalo County town, but it’s located in Hall County.

The location hasn’t mattered because the Shelton Cemetery Association cared for the 12 ½-acre plot of land. But the Shelton Township is set to dissolve on Jan. 1, and when it does, so will a key funding source for the cemetery. Association members who care for the cemetery are now scrambling to find a solution.

The cemetery was founded in 1885, with a deed for 10 acres handwritten in calligraphy. It was expanded to its current size in 1959.

US Gas Prices Rise Slightly to $3.71 per Gallon

gas-cardCAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — A survey says the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in the U.S. has risen by 2 cents over the last two weeks to $3.71.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday that crude oil prices rose over jitters about Iraqi oil production as violence there grows.

Much of that increase hasn’t been passed on to consumers yet, and prices could increase over the coming weeks.

The survey taken Friday shows the average price for a gallon of midgrade gas was $3.90 and the average price for a gallon of premium was $4.05. Diesel averaged $3.95 a gallon.

Of cities surveyed in the continental U.S., Tucson, Arizona, had the lowest average price at $3.37 a gallon. Chicago had the highest average at $4.15 a gallon.

In Nebraska, the average price for a gallon of regular is $3.57.

College World Series Day 8 Recap

NCAA-CWSOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Tyler Campbell’s bases-loaded infield single in the bottom of the 10th inning gave Vanderbilt a 4-3 win over Texas on Saturday night and sent the Commodores to the College World Series finals against Virginia.

Campbell was in his second game filling in for third baseman Xavier Turner, who was ruled ineligible Friday for a violation of NCAA rules. Campbell had only 21 at-bats this season when he stepped to the plate in the 10th. He sent a slow grounder toward shortstop C.J. Hinojosa, who charged the ball, but couldn’t get it to first in time to get Campbell.

Freshman Hayden Stone (3-0) struck out eight in 5 2-3 innings of relief of Carson Fulmer. Vanderbilt (49-20) gives the SEC a team in the CWS finals for the seventh straight year.

John Curtiss (2-3) took the loss for Texas (46-21).

Earlier in the day Robbie Coman’s two-run, bases-loaded single gave Virginia the lead, and Josh Sborz and two relievers limited Mississippi to six singles in a 4-1 victory Saturday that sent the Cavaliers to the College World Series finals.

Virginia (52-14), in the CWS for the third time, will go to the championship round looking for its first national championship in baseball. The Cavaliers will play Vanderbilt in the best-of-three finals, starting Monday night. Vanderbilt beat Texas 2-1 in 10 innings Saturday night.

The Rebels (48-21) lost to Virginia for a second time in the CWS, ending their first trip to Omaha since 1972.

Sborz (6-4) threw 12 pitches on Friday before a heavy thunderstorm forced suspension of the game in the second inning. He was on the mound when play resumed and worked through the fifth inning. Artie Lewicki took over to start the sixth, and closer Nick Howard worked the ninth for his 20th save.

What is a Slur? Redskins Case Forces Us to Decide

Washington RedskinsSomething is happening just beneath the fight over the name of a certain Washington, D.C., pro football team: America is working through the process of determining what is — or is not — racially offensive.

What is a slur, and who gets to decide? How many people must be offended to tip the scales? Why should some be forced to sacrifice their traditions out of respect for others?

We are a long way from consensus on these questions, judging by the response to a federal ruling that the “Redskins” team name is disparaging and its trademarks should be canceled.

The team is appealing the decision, and even if it loses its trademark, it can still use the name. But this latest development highlights the limitations of how America wrestles with certain racial statements, and our struggle to balance free speech and social good.
