WAKEFIELD, Neb. (AP) — A tornado has destroyed the home of a northeast Nebraska couple a little more than eight months after a twister destroyed the home of their son and daughter-in-law.

The residence of Ronnie and Corliss Krusemark was one of more than two dozen residential dwellings near Wakefield that were heavily damaged or destroyed by a storm that spawned least four tornadoes on Monday, killing two people.

On Tuesday Traci Krusemark said “it’s happening all over again” after she viewed her in-laws’ crumpled home on Monday night.

She says the wrecked house looked just like her home near Wayne looked on Oct. 4 after it was leveled by a twister.

Lincoln Sex Offender Treatment Program in Jeopardy

sex-offendersLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Funding problems are jeopardizing treatment for some sex offenders in a Lincoln-based program.

The program known as STOP won’t have funds for about half of its 50-plus patients after June 30, unless other sources for money can be found. STOP stands for Sexual Trauma/Offense Prevention.

Deputy Lancaster County Public Defender Joe Nigro says “we can’t just have it shut down,” referring to public safety factors.

The program provides therapy that’s aimed at helping people avoid reoffending and helping them adapt after being in prison or in the state psychiatric hospital in Lincoln.

Without the program, some patients might have to go back the state hospital or back to prison, because they have been ordered by the mental health board to participate in the program.

Guthrie, Royals Win 10th Straight, Edge Tigers 2-1

kc-royalsDETROIT (AP) — The Kansas City Royals won their 10th straight game, extending the team’s best streak in 20 years when Jeremy Guthrie pitched impressively into the seventh inning to beat the Detroit Tigers 2-1 Wednesday.

The AL Central-leading Royals have not won this many games in a row since a run of 14 in a row in 1994. They extended their division lead over the Tigers to 1 1/2 games.

Guthrie (4-6) allowed four hits and a walk while striking out nine. Drew Smyly (3-6) nearly matched him, but the Detroit left-hander was victimized by Alex Gordon’s RBI single in the first and a solo homer by Omar Infante in the fifth.

J.D. Martinez homered for the Tigers in the seventh, but the Kansas City bullpen got the last seven outs, with Greg Holland pitching the ninth for his 21st save in 22 chances.

Audit Report Rips Nebraska Gambling Commission

Mike Foley

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Less than a year into its existence, a state commission charged with helping problem gamblers has been castigated by the state auditor’s office for its handling of two contracts that appear to violate the state’s conflict-of-interest laws.

State Auditor Mike Foley issued a report late Tuesday on the Nebraska Commission on Problem Gambling, formed in July 2013. Foley says the commission named Jerry Bauerkemper, director of the not-for-profit Nebraska Council on Compulsive Gambling, as its interim director. Bauerkemper took a leave of absence as the not-for-profit’s director, but remained employed by it — even as the public commission he headed awarded two contracts valued at more than $200,000 to Bauerkemper’s organization without bidding out the work.

Foley also questions whether Bauerkemper’s organization provided the work it was paid to do.

Husker Wrestling Adds Arthur for Upcoming Season

UNLThe Nebraska wrestling team announced the addition of 149-pounder Justin Arthur for the 2014-15 season on Wednesday.

“We’re very excited about Justin Arthur joining us,” Head Coach Mark Manning said. “Justin possesses the qualities we look for and demand from our student-athletes, and he was highly sought after the last couple weeks by some of the top teams in college wrestling. Justin competed as a true freshman and had a tremendous year. He expressed to us the need to become a national champion as well as being part of a program that can challenge for championships. We feel he is another piece to the puzzle that allows our program to move forward toward our goals.”

Arthur spent his first year of college wrestling at Clarion, where he compiled a 29-16 record at 149 pounds and narrowly missed the All-America podium at the 2014 NCAA Championships. After dropping his opening match at the national tournament, Arthur reeled off three consecutive wins in the consolation bracket before falling to fourth-seeded Kendric Maple of Oklahoma by a 7-4 decision. Arthur, a Huntington, W.V., native, earned a pin and major decision during his winning streak at the NCAA Championships.

Before Clarion, Arthur completed his high school career at Huntington under Coach Robbie Archer as a three-time West Virginia state champion with a career record of 142-15. As a senior, he was named West Virginia’s Most Valuable Wrestler when he went 30-2 and collected a state title at 145 pounds. Arthur added state crowns as a junior in 2012 at 138 pounds when he went 40-2, and in 2010, when he earned a 39-3 record at 119 pounds. In 2011, he finished third at 130 pounds with a season record of 33-8.

In addition, Arthur was the NHSCA Senior Nationals runner-up and a two-time Fargo All-American.

Four Huskers Sign MLB Contracts

husker baseballLincoln – Since being drafted in the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft, three members of the 2014 Nebraska baseball team have signed professional contracts. Senior Zach Hirsch signed with the Milwaukee Brewers, while juniors Pat Kelly (Minnesota Twins) and Aaron Bummer (Chicago White Sox) each decided to forego their senior seasons and sign with their respective teams. Michael Pritchard was the fourth player from the 2014 squad to sign a contract, as he was picked up by the St. Louis Cardinals after not being drafted and signed with the Cardinals on Wednesday morning.

2014 marks the second time in Darin Erstad’s three-year tenure as head coach that the Huskers have lost a pair of juniors to the draft. Following the 2012 season, both Travis Huber and Richard Stock passed on their senior seasons.

“We are very excited for Zach, Michael, Pat and Aaron, to purse their dreams of being a Major League Baseball player,” Erstad said. “I can’t thank each of them enough for helping put Nebraska baseball back on the map and for helping cement our culture at Nebraska for years to come.”

Kelly was the first member of the 2014 team to get picked in the draft, going in the 12th round to the Twins. He was a three-time All-Big Ten performer and two-time first-team selection during his three seasons at Nebraska.

Kelly led the Huskers in hits each of the past two seasons and ended his career ranked 20th in school history with 212 career hits. Defensively, Kelly posted a .990 fielding percentage in 2014, as he committed just three errors, and he leaves Nebraska ranked seventh in school history with 468 assists.

Selected in the 19th round by the White Sox, Bummer worked as a reliever during his freshman season in 2012 and started in the bullpen as a sophomore before joining NU’s weekend rotation during Big Ten play in 2013. The 6-2 lefty worked exclusively as a starter in 2014, throwing 89.0 innings over 15 starts. He led the Huskers in 2014 in strikeouts with 56, including a team-best 16 strikeouts looking.

During his three years in Lincoln, Bummer posted an 11-6 record with a 3.06 ERA. He also tossed his first career complete game during the 2014 season, as he capped a series sweep of Ohio State at Hawks Field. The 2014 Draft marked the second time Bummer has been selected, as he was a 31st-round pick by the New York Yankees in 2011 out of high school, but instead chose to come to Nebraska.

After working as a starter during his sophomore season in 2012, Hirsch made the move to the bullpen in 2013 and was one of the top relief arms in the country in 2014. A third-team All-Big Ten selection in 2014, Hirsch was also one of 50 relievers nationally to be named to the Midseason Stopper-of-the-Year List. For his work in 2014, Hirsch was picked in the 19th round by Milwaukee.

Hirsch led the Huskers with a 1.72 ERA in 2014 and held opposing batters to a .193 average. The 6-4 lefty’s ERA is the second-lowest single-season ERA in school history, topped only by Bill McGuire’s 1.29 ERA in 1984. Hirsch’s 31 appearances in 2014 were the most by a Husker since Brett Jensen made 33 appearances in 2005.

A three-time All-Big Ten performer and 2012 All-American, Pritchard ended his four-year Husker career ranked fifth in school history with 251 career hits. A career .339 hitter, Pritchard’s 45 career doubles are tied for 10th in NU history.

A native of Omaha, Pritchard was selected to the 2014 NCAA Stillwater Regional All-Tournament team and was a first-team All-Big Ten pick for the second time in his career in 2014 after being a first-team selection in 2012. Pritchard earned second-team honors in 2013.

One of the most prolific hitters in Husker history, Pritchard strung together a 25-game hitting streak in 2012 to tie for the third-longest streak in school history. He added a 20-game hitting streak in 2013 to become the first player in school history with a pair of 20+ game hitting streaks. He also put together a 57-game on base streak that spanned the final 42 games of the 2013 season to the first 15 games of the 2014 season.

Nebraska Officials Begin Prison Overhaul Effort

ne-state-penLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Top officials from all three branches of Nebraska government will look at ways to reduce prison crowding and costs, while maintaining public safety.

Nebraska officials and the Council of State Governments began a formal review Wednesday of the prison system. The study will examine alternatives to incarceration, such as probation and drug courts.

Lawmakers this year established a 19-member working group to look for solutions, led by Gov. Dave Heineman, Speaker of the Legislature Greg Adams and Nebraska Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael Heavican.

Group members will look at what other states have done recently to reduce their prison populations. Nebraska’s prisons housed 5,175 people as of May 31, placing the system at 158 percent of its operating capacity.

Pair to Stand Trial Over 12-Year-Old’s Smiley Face Tattoo

gavel-moreCENTERVILLE, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania couple has been ordered to stand trial on charges they tattooed a smiley face and a derogatory word on a 12-year-old girl who spent the night at their home.

33-year-old Randall Charlton III and 30-year-old Melissa Becker, both of Centerville, on Tuesday waived their rights to preliminary hearings on child endangerment and related charges over the May 14 tattooing.

Crawford County prosecutors say Charlton and Becker didn’t contact the girl’s mother for permission to be tattooed. That’s against the law in Pennsylvania.

The girl was visiting children who were being supervised by Charlton and Becker at the time.

According to the affidavit, the girl identified Charlton as the one who tattooed the smiley and the vulgar term toward women on her left forearm.

A North Platte woman is in jail on a felony charge after she allegedly burglarized the home of her friend’s parents while they were out of town.

At around 10:15 a.m., on June 9, North Platte police responded to the report of a burglary in the 2800 block of West C Street.

Upon arrival, the owners of the home told officers that they had been out of town and had returned to find that their home had been rummaged through and several items were missing.

Through an investigation, officers developed a suspect, Jennifer Rosenburg.  Officers learned that Rosenberg had been staying with the homeowner’s son, at a different address, and had access to the keys to the home.  Investigator John Deal said Rosenberg also knew the victims were out of town.

Following further investigation, investigators located some of the stolen items in Rosenberg’s possession.

As a result, Rosenberg was arrested on June 17 and charged with felony burglary.

She was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.
