Recount Ordered in Nebraska NRD Election

voting-boothLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska officials have ordered a recount in a primary election for the Upper Big Blue Natural Resources District.

The Nebraska Board of Canvassers on Monday certified the results of all races from last month’s primary, except for the NRD race. The recount was ordered because of an oversight that led to more than 1,000 voters in York County not receiving that race on their ballots. The county election clerk sought to fix the problem by reprinting and distributing corrected ballots.

The results show that Stan Boehr received 3,422 votes in the race. Eugene Ulmer received 2,870 votes, while Becky Roesler received 2,852 votes. The vote margin between Ulmer and Roesler was close enough that it triggered the state’s automatic recount rules.

Floyd Pitches Braves past Rockies 3-1

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Gavin Floyd pitched effectively into the seventh inning for his first win since returning last month from reconstructive surgery on his right elbow, leading the Atlanta Braves past the Colorado Rockies 3-1 on Monday night.

Floyd, who was limited to five starts last season while with the Chicago White Sox before undergoing Tommy John surgery, allowed one run and three hits in 6 2-3 innings in picking up his first victory since beating Cleveland on Oct. 3, 2012. Signed by Atlanta as a free agent last December, Floyd (1-2) snapped a career-long six-game losing streaking dating to April 2013.

Chris Johnson had three hits, including two RBI singles, to help the Braves beat the Rockies for the 15th time in 18 games since 2012. Evan Gattis had an RBI groundout and singled to extend his hitting streak to a career-best 10 games.

Craig Kimbrel got three outs for his 17th save in 20 chances.

The Rangers outshot L.A. 17-8 in the second period but couldn’t beat Quick while Jake Muzzin (MUHZ’-ihn) and Mike Richards tallied against Henrik Lundqvist.

The Kings were 1-for-4 on the power play while killing off the Rangers’ six extra-man chances.

Bergman is scheduled to start Monday night’s game against Atlanta in his major league debut.

Cuddyer is out because of a strained left shoulder and Butler has inflammation in his right rotator cuff.

This is Cuddyer’s second stint on the DL after missing 28 games with a strained left hamstring. He is hitting .317 with five home runs this season.

The 23-year-old Butler allowed six runs and 10 hits in 5 1-3 innings in his major league debut during Friday’s 7-2 loss to the Dodgers.

Bergman was 4-4 with a 3.84 ERA in 12 starts for Triple-A Colorado Springs.

NP Woman Gets 2-6 Years for Distribution of Meth

A 40-year-old North Platte woman will spend the next several years in prison for distributing methamphetamine.

Staci Ponte appeared in Lincoln County District Court on Monday.

In January, North Platte Police responded to the Motel 6 to serve an arrest warrant on Ponte for distributing drugs.

Officers contacted Ponte in the room where she was living, and attempted to take her into custody.

While being taken into custody, Ponte attempted to flush methamphetamine down the toilet.  Police also found two baggies containing meth on Ponte’s person.

Additionally, upon arrival at the jail, officers discovered that Ponte had Valium in her possession.

Prior to sentencing, Lincoln County Attorney, Rebecca Harling, told Judge Donald Rowlands that she had known Ponte for years, and considered her to be a person that has a lot of potential when she has her addiction under control.

“As the coroner, I wondered if I’d pick her up one day,” Harling said.  “In fact, I’m surprised I haven’t had to.”

Harling then asked Judge Rowlands to sentence Ponte to a lengthy prison sentence, where she can get long-term treatment for her methamphetamine addiction.

Ponte’s attorney, Mike Nozicka, said that he could appreciate the state’s position.  He said Ponte has an obvious problem with substance abuse, and pointed out that all the crimes Ponte had committed had drugs as the root cause.

He said Ponte has accepted responsibility for her actions, and has also been receiving treatment for some mental health problems.  Nozicka told the court that Ponte has a five-year-old daughter, and doesn’t want to miss out on time with her.

Before handing down the sentence, Judge Rowlands admonished Ponte for her criminal record which goes back nearly 25 years and agreed that she has an extremely serious addiction to methamphetamine.

He then sentenced her to two to six years in the Women’s Reformatory in York for possession of methamphetamine with the intent to deliver, and one to three years for possession of Valium.  The sentences will be served concurrently.

Ponte was given credit for 158 days already served, and remanded to the custody of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Denver Dispatcher is Fired After 911 Caller is Killed

denver-policeDENVER (AP) — Denver police say a dispatcher has been fired after failing to relay key information to officers responding to a call from a woman who was killed 12 minutes into a 911 call.

Police say the dispatcher didn’t tell officers that the woman’s husband was getting a gun from a safe.

Public safety department spokeswoman Daelene Mix said Monday the dispatcher was fired Friday. The person was not identified.

Police have said Kristine Kirk pleaded in the April 14 call for authorities to hurry and send officers because her husband had asked her to get a gun and shoot him.

Kirk said Richard Kirk was hallucinating, after having marijuana-infused candy and possibly pain pills.

Forty-seven year-old Richard Kirk has been charged with first-degree murder. He has not yet entered a plea.

New Boat Ramps to be Installed in Scottsbluff

river-scottsbluffSCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) — Paddlers will soon have new places to climb in and out of the North Platte River in Scottsbluff.

City officials are preparing to install two canoe ramps along the river this week. One is planned at the end of Fifth Avenue, and the other will be installed at Riverside Park.

Assistant City Manager Nathan Johnson says the park is a good starting point for a canoe excursion. Johnson predicts the gravel ramps will only take a few days to complete.

Scotts Bluff County Tourism gave the city $1,000 in support of the project. Johnson says the ramps are intended to increase tourism in this area and provide another asset that residents can enjoy.
