Stanley Cup Finals 2014LOS ANGELES (AP) — Captain Dustin Brown redirected Willie Mitchell’s shot 10:26 into the second overtime, and the Los Angeles Kings outlasted the New York Rangers 5-4 Saturday night to take a 2-0 lead in the Stanley Cup finals.

In their third straight overtime game, they traded scoring chances with New York before Mitchell teed up a long shot. Brown deflected it under Henrik Lundqvist’s glove arm, ending the longest finals game in Rangers history and nearly the longest playoff game in Kings history.

Lundqvist made 39 saves for New York, and Jonathan Quick had 34 for Los Angeles.

Game 3 is Monday at Madison Square Garden.

California Chrome Sustains Gash to Foot

California Chrome Kentucky DerbyNEW YORK (AP) — California Chrome sustained a bloody gash to his right front foot during the Belmont Stakes, an injury that may have hurt his chances in his failed bid to sweep the Triple Crown for the first time in 36 years.

Photos taken while the horse was walking back to the barn after his loss in the third leg of the Triple Crown on Saturday show the injured hoof.

It isn’t clear when the injury happened, but the colt’s camp says it’s not serious. Chrome finished in a dead heat for fourth with Wicked Strong.

The horse was the overwhelming favorite in the Belmont and his supporters were hoping he would become the first Triple Crown champion since Affirmed in 1978.

Alex Gordon, Lorenzo Cain, Alcides Escobar and Nori Aoki drove in a run apiece as the Royals bounced back from an offensively inept performance in a 4-2 series-opening loss Friday night.

Aaron Crow (3-1) retired one batter in the sixth in relief of starter Danny Duffy, and breezed through the seventh to earn the victory. Kelvin Herrera and Michael Mariot finished it off.

David Phelps (1-4) allowed seven runs on 10 hits and two walks in 5 2-3 innings.

Barnes, Rockies End 8-Game Skid, Top Dodgers in 10

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Brandon Barnes hit a winning triple off the center-field wall in the 10th inning and the Colorado Rockies snapped an eight-game losing streak, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-4 Saturday.

The defeat capped a tough day for the Dodgers, who saw outfielder Yasiel Puig and second baseman Dee Gordon leave early because of injuries.

Gordon left in the fourth inning because of discomfort in his right hip and was listed as day to day.

Puig was day to day with a strained right hip flexor. He walked in the fifth, slid hard into second on a double-play grounder and didn’t take the field in the bottom half.

Chris Perez (0-3) allowed a one-out single to Justin Morneau in the 10th. He fanned Michael McKenry before Barnes hit a deep drive to end it.

Franklin Morales (4-4) pitched 1 1-3 scoreless innings.

Three Huskers Picked on Final Day of MLB Draft

husker baseballLincoln – Three members of the 2014 Nebraska baseball team, along with two Husker signees were picked on the final day of the MLB First-Year Player Draft on Saturdayafternoon.

Pat Kelly, Aaron Bummer and Zach Hirsch were each picked on Saturday after helping the Huskers reach the NCAA Tournament in 2014 for the first time since the 2008 season. Husker signees Luis Alvarado and Garett King were also selected, joining fellow signees Monte Harrison and Jakson Reetz, who picked on Thursday and Friday.

Kelly was the first to hear is name called when he was picked by his home state Minnesota Twins with the fifth pick in the 12th round. A three-time All-Big Ten selection, including first-team honors the past two seasons, Kelly is a native of Red Wing, Minn.

Kelly is the first Husker selected in the top-15 rounds of the draft since 2011, when Cody Asche was a fourth-round pick by the Philadelphia Phillies. Kelly is also the third Husker taken by the Twins in the last three drafts, joining Chad Christensen (2013) and Travis Huber (2012).

Bummer and Hirsch were both taken in the 19th round, with Bummer being selected with the third pick by the Chicago White Sox, while Hirsch went eight picks later to the Milwaukee Brewers. Hirsch was the second player with Husker ties picked by the Brewers, as Milwaukee snagged Harrison with the 50th overall pick in the second round on Thursday night.

Alvarado became the third Husker signee picked in the draft when the Boston Red Sox took him with the second-to-last pick in the 33rd round. King then came off the board as the 10th pick in the 36th round by the New York Mets.

Saturday marked the first time since 2010 that the Huskers have had three players taken in the first 20 rounds of the draft. Michael Mariot (8th – Kansas City), Ryan Hughes (16th– Oakland) and Mike Nesseth (17th – Philadephia) were each picked in the first 20 rounds of the 2010 draft.

Kelly’s selection marked the 36-straight year that at least one Husker has been picked in the MLB Draft.

Pat Kelly  |  JR  |  2B  (Minnesota Twins – 12th Round)

Kelly has been one of the top hitters in the Big Ten the last two seasons, while also ranking as one of the best infield defenders in the league. He led the Huskers in hits (76), RBIs (55) and home runs (4) in 2014. Kelly led the Huskers in hits each of the past two seasons and his 55 RBIs in 2014 were the most by a Husker since 2010 when Adam Bailey drove in 57 runs. Defensively he committed just three errors all season in 315 chances, a fielding percentage of .990.

Kelly became the 22nd player in school history to notch 200 career hits, and ended his junior year ranked 20th in school history with 212 hits. He has also started the past 135 straight games for the Huskers, including every game of the past two seasons.

Aaron Bummer  |  JR  |  LHP  (Chicago White Sox – 19th Round)

Saturday marked the second time Bummer has been selected in the draft, as he was a 31st-round pick by the New York Yankees in 2011 out of high school, but instead chose to come to Nebraska.

Bummer worked as a reliever during his freshman season in 2012 and started in the bullpen as a sophomore before joining NU’s weekend rotation during Big Ten play in 2013. The 6-2 lefty worked exclusively as a starter in 2014, throwing 89.0 innings over 15 starts. He led the Huskers in 2014 in strikeouts with 56, including a team-best 16 strikeouts looking.

Through his junior season, Bummer has posted a 11-6 record with a 3.06 ERA. He also tossed his first career complete game during the 2014 season, as he capped a series sweep of Ohio State at Hawks Field.

Zach Hirsch  |  SR  |  LHP  (Milwaukee Brewers – 19th Round)

After working as a starter during his sophomore season in 2012, Hirsch made the move to the bullpen in 2013 and was one of the top relief arms in the country this season. A third-team All-Big Ten selection in 2014, Hirsch was also one of 50 relievers nationally to be named to the Midseason Stopper-of-the-Year List.

Hirsch led the Huskers with a 1.72 ERA in 2014 and held opposing batters to a .193 average. The 6-4 lefty’s 31 appearances were the most by a Husker since Brett Jensen made 33 appearances in 2005.

Hirsch struck out a career-high 50 batters in 52.1 innings of work, while posting a 5-2 record and four saves. His 50 strikeouts ranked third on the team to starters Aaron Bummer (56) and Chance Sinclair (52).

Luis Alvarado  |  HS (Puerto Rico Baseball Academy)  |  RHP/INF/OF  (Boston Red Sox – 33rd Round)

Alvarado was a late addition to Nebraska’s signing class, as he signed a letter of intent in April. The 6-5 native of Salinas, Puerto Rico, has an athletic frame and could play in the field or pitch for the Huskers.

Tabbed as an second-team underclass All-American in 2013 by Perfect Game, Alvarado earned first-team All-Canada/Puerto Rico honors in 2014. The scouting service ranked Alvarado as the No. 3 high school player in Puerto Rico and the No. 165 high school recruit overall.

Alvarado attended Montverde Academy in Florida in 2013, before returning to Puerto Rico for his senior season.

Garett King  |  HS (Orange County Lutheran)  |  RHP  (N.Y. Mets – 36th Round)

The Nebraska coaching staff was able to pull King away from Anaheim, Calif., to sign with the Huskers last fall. The 6-3 righty was tabbed as the No. 18 right-handed pitcher in the state of California by Perfect Game and the No. 187 righty in the country. King was a 2014 California Region honorable-mention pick by Perfect Game in 2014 after earning underclass high honorable-mention All-American honors last season.

As a junior in 2013, King helped the Lancers to a runner-up finish in the Trinity League in after the team won the title in 2012. He also competed at the 2013 PG WWBA World Championships with Team Evoshield in Jupiter, Fla.

NEW YORK (AP) — California Chrome has failed in his bid to win the first Triple Crown in 36 years.

Tonalist won the Belmont Stakes, and California Chrome finished far back in a tie for fourth Saturday. The result means the longest drought without a Triple Crown champion in history is extended.

California Chrome and jockey Victor Espinoza lost the 1 1/2-mile race on a hot day at Belmont Park, where tens of thousands of fans were packed in hoping to see history. It was not to be, leaving Affirmed as the most recent Triple Crown winner in 1978.

Western Nebraska Health Dept. Begins West Nile Testing

mosquitoSCOTTSLBUFF, Neb. (AP) — A western Nebraska health department has begun testing for the mosquito-borne West Nile virus.

The Scotts Bluff County Health Department began collecting mosquitoes on June 1 and is accepting dead birds for testing for the virus.

The neighboring city of Gering will begin spraying for mosquitoes on Tuesday.

West Nile is transmitted to people through mosquitoes that feed on an infected bird. Most infected people have no symptoms or only mild flu-like symptoms. A small percentage develops a serious illness.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services website says that last year, there were 229 human cases of West Nile — including five deaths.

Evaluation of Nikko Jenkins to Be Done in Prison

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A judge has ruled that a man convicted of killing four people in Omaha last summer should undergo a psychiatric evaluation in prison, rather than being taken to a state psychiatric hospital.

Douglas County District Judge Peter Bataillon issued the ruling Friday after prosecutors argued that moving Nikko Jenkins from the Lincoln prison where he’s being held to a psychiatric hospital would pose a security risk.

A defense psychiatrist says Jenkins’ mental state had deteriorated since he was convicted in April of four counts of first-degree murder.

Jenkins is awaiting sentencing for the August 2013 deaths of Curtis Bradford, Jorge Cajiga-Ruiz, Juan Uribe-Pena and Andrea Kruger.

Driver Charged in Crash that Injured Tracy Morgan

traceymorganNEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — Actor and comedian Tracy Morgan was critically injured Saturday after a tractor-trailer rammed into his chauffeured limousine bus, setting off a chain-reaction crash that left one member of his entourage dead and two others seriously hurt, authorities said.

A truck driver from Georgia was charged with death by auto in connection to the crash, prosecutors said. Middlesex County prosecutors said 35-year-old Kevin Roper, of Jonesboro, also faces four counts of assault by auto stemming from the crash. His bail was set at $50,000, and he was expected to turn himself in later Saturday. It wasn’t immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Morgan, the former “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock” cast member, was returning from a standup comedy show in Delaware when his Mercedes limo bus carrying seven people overturned on the New Jersey Turnpike near Cranbury Township at about 1 a.m., state police Sgt. 1st Class Greg Williams said.

James McNair, 62, of Peekskill, New York, a passenger in the limo bus, died at the scene, Williams said. Morgan, 45, and Jeffrey Millea, 36, of Shelton, Connecticut, were flown from the accident scene to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, where they were in critical condition, hospital spokesman Peter Haigney said.

A fourth passenger, comedian Ardie Fuqua Jr., was also in critical condition, while a fifth passenger, comic Harris Stanton, was treated and released, Haigney said. Two others in the limo were unhurt, including the driver.

Morgan remains in the intensive care unit at the hospital.

“His family is now with him and he is receiving excellent care,” spokesman Lewis Kay said in a statement. “We don’t anticipate much of a change in his condition today but will provide a further update once more information becomes available.”

Williams said the tractor-trailer driver apparently failed to notice slow traffic ahead and swerved at the last minute in a vain attempt to avoid a crash. But it smashed into the back of the limo, prompting a chain-reaction crash with a second tractor-trailer, an SUV and two cars.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it was working with state police to look at any issues in the crash related to commercial trucking and limousine safety.

Morgan’s limo was owned by Atlantic Transportation Services, which said it had one employee behind the wheel and a second in the front passenger seat.

“Although the investigation is still pending, we concur with the preliminary reports that the accident was caused by another vehicle traveling behind the Atlantic limo bus,” the Rehoboth Beach, Delaware-based company said. “We are grateful that our drivers did not sustain life-threatening injuries.”

Walmart President Bill Simon issued a statement that said one of the firm’s trucks was involved in the accident. While noting that the crash remains under investigation, Simon said “Walmart will take full responsibility” if authorities determine that the company’s truck caused the accident.

“We’re praying for the family and friends of the passenger who lost his life in the terrible accident” the statement said. “Our hearts go out to everyone involved and we hope those who were injured get the care that they need and make a full recovery.”

Morgan performed comedy standup Friday night at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino. His scheduled appearance at the Fillmore Charlotte in North Carolina on Saturday night was canceled.

Fuqua had tweeted that he was opening for Morgan on Friday. On his Instagram page, Fuqua included a collage of photos from the Delaware show.

“This is what it looks like from the stage to see a standing ovation from 1500 people,” Fuqua wrote at around midnight Friday. “Then we traveled back to NYC in style in a luxury Mercedes Sprinter. Road life is a good life!”

Morgan, a New York City native, joined “SNL” in 1996 and was on the sketch-comedy program for seven years before leaving to star in “The Tracy Morgan Show” in 2003. That show lasted just one season. In 2006, Morgan found a long-running role on NBC’s hit show “30 Rock,” which was created by “SNL” co-star Tina Fey. He received an Emmy nomination for best supporting actor for “30 Rock” in 2009.

Morgan grew up fatherless, one of five siblings, in a blighted section of Brooklyn, where he helped raise and support the family.

He once called his gift for being funny “a defense mechanism” for his miserable circumstances. As a teen, he started doing comedy on the streets to supplement the family’s welfare income.

His tough upbringing informed his humor.

“My aunt was a crackhead,” he told his Brooklyn audience in a recent special aired on Comedy Central. “I remember one Christmas she bought me a Game Boy. Then she stole it. Then she helped me look for it.”

In recent years, he has struggled with alcoholism and drunken driving arrests. He had a successful kidney transplant in late 2010.

Morgan’s films include “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back,” ”The Longest Yard,” ”First Sunday,” ”Rio” and “Why Stop Now.”

Creighton Appeals Decision Favoring Deaf Medical Student

creighton-univOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Creighton University is appealing a federal judge’s ruling requiring it to provide a deaf student with special equipment and interpreters to allow him to finish his last two years of medical school.

The judge ruled in December that Creighton University’s medical school must accommodate Michael Argenyi’s (ar-GEN’-ee) disability. Last month, the judge ordered the Omaha university to pay nearly $500,000 in Argenyi’s legal fees.

Argenyi was accepted to Creighton’s medical school in 2008 after disclosing that he was hearing-impaired and requesting accommodations for his disability to allow him to follow lectures and communicate with patients.

He sued in 2009, after leaving the school when the university refused his requests for interpreters — even though he offered to pay for the interpreters himself.
