Powerful Storms Blamed for 2 Deaths in Arkansas

severe-weatherLITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Two people were killed by falling trees in northeast Arkansas as powerful storms swept through parts of the Midwest and South, knocking over trees and utility lines.

The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management says one man died when a tree fell on a van, while another man was killed in nearby Jonesboro when a tree fell onto his home. Their names haven’t been released.

Strong winds also blew over a freight train on a Union Pacific line, blocking U.S. Highway 49. Arkansas State Police say no one was injured and no hazardous cargo was involved.

Spokesman Bill Sadler says about a half-dozen tractor-trailers also blew over in the region. No hazardous materials or serious injuries were involved.

The storms damaged numerous homes and businesses and caused widespread power outages.

Ventura Leads Royals to 3-2 Win over Cardinals

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Yordano Ventura threw six innings in his return from a sore elbow, and the Kansas City Royals rallied to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 Thursday night and end a string of eight straight home losses to their in-state rivals.

Ventura (3-5) was skipped his previous time through the rotation because of minor elbow pain, but he looked sharp in his return.

He pitched to contact and took advantage of some sharp defense, which helped him to limit the damage whenever he ran into trouble.

The Royals rallied for three runs off Michael Wacha (4-4) to take the lead in the sixth inning, and Francisley Bueno and Wade Davis each pitched a perfect inning in relief of Ventura.

Eddie Butler Set to Make His Major League Debut

DENVER (AP) — Eddie Butler controls his emotions about as well as he does his pinpoint fastball.

On the eve of his major league debut, the Colorado Rockies’ prized pitching prospect is hardly showing any traces of tension. The team is bringing Butler up from Double-A Tulsa to pitch against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday and is hoping he adds a spark to a scuffling starting rotation.

The 22-year-old is taking it all in stride. He said, “if I go out there and pitch six innings and have us in the ball game, that’s going to be a great day.”

Colorado made one thing very clear — the team is not counting on Butler to swoop in to rescue the season, only to keep the Rockies in games.
