2 Die in Car-Semi Collision Near Fremont

fatal-accidentFREMONT, Neb. (AP) — Two people have been killed in a collision between a car and semitrailer just north of Fremont.

The accident occurred just after 1 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of U.S. Highway 77 and Nebraska Highway 91. The names of the two victims aren’t being released until relatives are notified.

Dodge County Sheriff Steve Hespen says the truck driven by 51-year-old Byron Morrow, of Tekamah, was headed west on Nebraska 91 before turning south onto U.S. 77. That’s when the big rig was struck by the car.

Morrow was not injured. Both people in the car were pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident is being investigated.

Platte Co. Sheriff’s Department Seeks Inmate Counseling Funds

platte-county-sheriffCOLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — The sheriff’s department in Platte County is seeking $10,000 in the 2014-15 budget to add a part-time counseling position at the jail.

Former Sheriff Jon Zavadil, who retired last month, says his and other jails have become dumping grounds for people who need mental health care, something for which the jail isn’t equipped or staffed.

The problems have arisen since the state shifted responsibility for some mental health treatment from regional facilities to community-based services.

He says treatment gaps have opened between services that once were available at regional facilities and what’s locally accessible to people sitting in jail, accused of crimes.

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — State Sen. Mike Gloor says he’s considering a run to become speaker of the Nebraska Legislature.

Gloor, of Grand Island, told a Rotary Club gathering in Grand Island on Tuesday that he’s thought about leaving his post as chairman of the Banking, Commerce and Insurance Committee to seek the Legislature’s top job.

Sen. Greg Adams, of York, will be leaving the Legislature at the end of the year because of term limits and so will surrender the post he’s held for the past two sessions.

Gloor stopped short of saying he will seek the job and noted that several other lawmakers may want it. One senator, Colby Coash (KOH’-ash), of Lincoln, has already said he will seek the position.

Nebraska Man Sentenced for Having Child Porn

sex-offendersOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska man has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for receiving child pornography.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for Nebraska says 35-year-old David Evans was sentenced Monday in Omaha’s federal court.

There is no parole in the federal system.

Evans was arrested in 2012 after authorities say they found images of child pornography available for sharing on his computer. Prosecutors say two of the images were videos involving prepubescent minors engaged in sex acts.

After his release from prison, Evans will be under federal supervision for another five years and be required to register as a sex offender.

Fremont Man Accused of Taking Nearly $2.5 Million

EMBEZZLINFREMONT, Neb. (AP) — A Fremont man has been accused of embezzling nearly $2.5 million from his employer over several years.

The Fremont Police Department says 66-year-old Dennis D. Hesman was arrested Wednesday. He faces 10 counts of felony theft by deception and one count of felony criminal conspiracy. Court records do not list an attorney.

Hesman’s former employer claims he falsified documents while working for the company between 2007 and 2013. He is accused of using those documents to embezzle nearly $2.5 million.

Authorities say they’re investigating other people in the case. Federal charges are possible.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska wildlife officials say severe storms that swept across the state have killed two peregrine falcon chicks atop the Nebraska Capitol.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission provides live streaming video of the nest box, and many falcon watchers awoke Wednesday to find it empty. Game and Parks and Capitol staff, along with personnel from Fontenelle Forest’s Raptor Recovery, found the bodies of both chicks Wednesday morning.

One chick was discovered on the second floor roof of the Capitol. The other was found on the ground.

A Game and Parks manager says it appears the chicks were blown out of their nest during the Tuesday storms.

Wind gusts in Lincoln exceeded 70 mph during the storms.

Gonzalez Goes on DL with Inflamed Index Finger

Carlos-Gonzalez-Rockies-CarDENVER (AP) — The Colorado Rockies have placed All-Star outfielder Carlos Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list with an inflamed left index finger that’s bothered him most of the season.

Gonzalez’s finger has recently become so swollen that he struggles to hold onto the bat. He’s hitting just .255 this season.

To take Gonzalez’s place on the roster, the Rockies recalled infielder Ryan Wheeler from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Wednesday. They also recalled catcher Michael McKenry from Colorado Springs and designated catcher Jordan Pacheco for assignment.

The break will give Gonzalez a chance to rest not only his ailing finger, but a balky left knee that’s given him trouble at times.

The 28-year-old Gonzalez played in just 19 games after the All-Star break last season because of a sprained right middle finger.
