NP City Council Awards Funds for Cedar Bowl Renovations

cedar-bowlDespite severe weather in the area, the North Platte City Council meeting went on as planned Tuesday evening.

The agenda item that was on everyone’s mind was, of course, the project to renovate the former Cedar Bowl and how much funding, if any, the City Council would award the project from the city’s Quality Growth Fund.

Local businessmen, Lonnie Parsons and Gary Suhr, have plans to transform the Cedar Bowl into a high-quality family entertainment center, including a family-friendly restaurant.  The business closed its doors in May after nearly 36 years in business.

The facility is in need of major repairs and renovation, to the tune of nearly $3 million.  Suhr and Parsons’ ability to go through with the purchase of the building hinged on their ability to receive assistance from the QGF.

After receiving a recommendation that was lower than they had hoped for from the Quality Growth Fund Citizen Review Committee, they were hopeful that the Council would come through.

According to Parsons, after some negotiations, the Council approved a $100,000 grant and a $350,000 low-interest loan, with a 7-1 vote.  Councilman Jim Carman voted against the proposal.

Councilman Andrew Lee said said he felt the agreement was fair, and prevented the leakage of tax dollars to other cities, such as Kearney.

“The loan helps protect the risk, and it was the risk of betting on them,” Lee said.

There is no word yet on when renovations will get underway, but, as the Save Bowling in North Platte Facebook page says, “we’ll all be having a ball at the (former) Cedar Bowl soon.”

Royals Outlast Cardinals 8-7

kc-royalsST. LOUIS (AP) — Eric Hosmer hit a tiebreaking single off closer Trevor Rosenthal in the ninth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-7 Tuesday night for their second straight road victory in the four-game, two-city series.

Rookie Kolten Wong’s first career home run was a grand slam in the second that ended the Cardinals’ 20-inning scoreless drought and gave them an early four-run cushion. The defending National League champions finished a dismal 2-7 homestand when their pitchers faltered.

Alex Gordon’s three-run homer capped a six-run fifth for the Royals against Jaime Garcia that put them up by two. Kansas City starter James Shields also scuffled, surrendering five earned runs in 5 1-3 innings.

Greg Holland worked the ninth for his 16th save in 17 chances. The intrastate rivalry now shifts to Kansas City, the home team for the last two games of the interleague series that resumes Wednesday.

Aqib Talib Gives Props to Peyton Manning

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Aqib Talib figures he’s upgraded quarterbacks by moving to Denver and he’s definitely traded up when it comes to the wide receivers he’s facing in offseason workouts.

Talib first weighed in on the Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady debate last week when he was a guest on the NFL Network, which chose him as one of the league’s top 100 players of 2013. He said that with all due respect to Brady, who will always be his friend, he’s now playing with the best quarterback in the business.

Manning said last week he hadn’t seen the segment, but he certainly returned the compliment, suggesting Talib — and therefore not Super Bowl champion cornerback Richard Sherman — “was probably the toughest corner that we played against last year.”

Sterling Teen Accused of Killing Grandparents

crime-scene-police-shootSTERLING, Colo. (AP) — Investigators have arrested a 19-year-old and his girlfriend on suspicion of murdering his grandparents in Sterling.

Brendan Lee Johnson and 18-year-old Cassandra Ann Reib could face charges of murder, forgery and robbery.

The couple is suspected in the deaths of Charles and Shirley Severance, both 70. The Severances are Johnson’s grandparents.

The body of Charles Severance was discovered in his home May 29. An autopsy showed no evidence of injury or trauma.

Police announced Tuesday that the remains of Shirley Severance were discovered near Sterling, with other remains found in Lorenzo, Nebraska.

Police did not immediately speculate on a motive. The two are scheduled to appear in court for advisement Wednesday.

Marino Says He’s Withdrawing from Concussion Suit

nfl_logo2011-medMIAMI (AP) — Dan Marino says he is withdrawing as a plaintiff in a concussion lawsuit against the National Football League, and doesn’t suffer any effects from head injuries.

The Hall of Fame quarterback said that within the past year, he authorized a claim to be filed on his behalf in case he needed future medical coverage. Marino said he didn’t realize he would automatically be listed as a plaintiff, and he has decided not to be part of the lawsuit.

Marino, 52, was one of 15 former players who filed a lawsuit in federal court in Philadelphia last week. They joined more than 4,800 others who have alleged the NFL misled players about the long-term dangers of concussions. The NFL has denied those claims.

California Chrome Kentucky DerbyNEW YORK (AP) — Art Sherman got his first glimpse of California Chrome in action in two weeks, and the trainer liked what he saw.

Sherman arrived in New York on Monday afternoon and watched his Triple Crown contender gallop at Belmont Park on Tuesday morning. It was the first time Sherman had observed the chestnut colt since he captured the Preakness.

Sherman says California Chrome is “an amazing horse.”

The Kentucky Derby and the Preakness winner will try for the first Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978 on Saturday in the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes.

Lincoln County Roads Chief Seeks Budget Help

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — The Lincoln County highway superintendent says the frugality his department has been practicing is getting costly.

Sroad-workuperintendent Jerry Hitchcock asked the Board of Commissioners on Monday to keep his department in mind as budgeting begins.

He hasn’t been able to replace any old, worn-out equipment and says his aging trucks and graders need lots of maintenance to meet the work demands. Hitchcock told the commissioners that, “We’ve practiced frugality out of necessity, but now it’s leading us down the road of becoming more expensive.”

He estimates that by the end of the fiscal year, June 30, the repairs will total as much as $275,000.

Severe Weather in Nebraska Packs Baseball-Size Hail

severe-weatherDES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Large hail has been reported in Nebraska as severe weather with a potential for tornadoes moves through a swath of Midwest states.

The National Weather Service says the highest risk for severe weather Tuesday is centered in parts of northern and eastern Nebraska, western and southern Iowa, and northeast Missouri. Officials say there’s the potential for a derecho system, which is a storm of strong straight-line winds spanning at least 240 miles.

An outbreak of severe thunderstorms also is expected in parts of Illinois, Kansas and South Dakota. Officials say baseball-size hail was reported Tuesday afternoon in northeast Nebraska.

The severe weather threat arrives amid an unusually quiet late spring, with far fewer documented tornados in May than in previous years.

Charges Dropped Against Lincoln Man for Handing Out Religious Fliers

aclu-nebOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska civil liberties group is lauding the dismissal of charges against a Lincoln man, who was arrested March 15 for handing out religious pamphlets outside Lincoln’s Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Misdemeanor charges of trespassing and disobeying police orders against 77-year-old Larry Ball were dropped Friday at the request of Lincoln city prosecutors.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska, which has been representing Ball in the case, lauded the city’s move to dismiss. The ACLU says Ball was on a public sidewalk and exercising his First Amendment rights in handing out the fliers.

City prosecutor John McQuinn says the charges were dismissed because Ball had no criminal record and had not been back to the arena.
